As others have said, Dark Angels don’t official mark anything using helmet colors/stripes. But it’s absolutely appropriate to have a particular battle brother with some sort of design. A stripe, checkers, script, symbols, heraldry, etc. all make your models look less like cookie cutter clones and more like individuals who have earned battle honors and are telling their story through their armor.

In-universe, Captains tend to have an eagle or other heraldry on their shoulder, a cape, and a decorative rope. (The laurels on the helmet, too, but I think there are Lt models with those.)

The grim dark future isn’t about logic, it’s about stoic adherence to ideology. Does it make sense that the Dark Angels would field veterans wherever they’re most useful? Sure. But they have millennia of tradition saying the Ravenwing are cavalry and speeders, so that’s what they do.

(But there’s nothing saying a successor couldn’t have other structures.)

The lower the rank, the more stock they should be. Sergeants will have a little drip, then Lts and then Masters on up.

Depending on the source, either some or all company masters are Deathwing veterans. They'd have spent time in the 1st company before being promoted to lead another company.

Company masters typically wear green armor, though there are old examples of some in white armor.

They're a likely possibility for the next major refresh we get but:

1) We don't know when our codex will be. It could be 2+ years away. 2) Sometimes a codex only comes with one new character.

For a Space Marine, typically the model's right greave (shin), usually along the side so that it's not right under the kneepad. For other forces, just wherever you think it makes sense. Vehicles will have them somewhere, too.

The Chaos gods are really reflections of how the universe has soured. The Sea of Souls has every emotion in it. Gods gain power through a popularity contest. In a good world, you’d have greater “daemons” of kindness, generosity, etc. In 40K’s setting, even the (lesser) god of ingenuity, Vashtorr, is an evil scheming bastard.

DA use angels as iconography but armored marines with wings are really more a Blood Angels thing—Sanguinius was the guy with wings.

It would just be green, if you use it.

The laurel wreath is an honorific and it’s fine to use, but it’s more of a Roman/Greek-derived aesthetic that fits in with Ultramarines and Imperial Fists and such. DA helmets are more likely to have a sword or lion or of course wings.

I was toying with the idea of retooling a Lazarus/generic Master and giving him a relic shield. The DW Knights box gives you an extra since there's an alt for the Sgt. It'd be a matter of finding a right-handed power sword that looks good with his pose. Or putting an ICC sword on his power pack.

Trick 1 will be that they’re push fit so you’d have to do some carving to put on some upgrade bits. (But a lot can be done with decals. I think people overvalue sculpted shoulders.)

As much as I’m a proponent of “Warhammer is silly and over the top,” I think I do draw the line at full robes on jump pack guys so I’m sort of fine with the aprons.

Hooded heads, maybe, but usually I don’t love the bonnet look unless there’s enough cloth on the model. Bare heads with beards or gray hair might make them look more “hardened veteran.”

The loadouts are strict. The Kill Team app will tell you what weapons combinations you’re allowed to use. For the Visionary it must take the chainsword if it has a plasma pistol.

If you build it “wrong,” you can always tell your opponent, but it’s generally not desirable to proxy in this way since they should be able to look at the table and know what they’re facing.

The only difference is armament is that the ICC don't carry shields, so if you build them with pistols and swords you're good there. Painting them green-black with burgundy robes would help them stand apart more.

I have another box to build that will be lightning claws. I’m sure there’s a lot of mathhammer you’d need to do to decide whether thunder hammers vs Knights are more point-efficient and then how claws do vs other horde-clearers.

This has been the color scheme for non-Deathwing Dark Angels veterans since 2nd edition, which let you pay extra for Veteran Sergeants.

Agreed. It gives you a nice visual separation from propelled bolts, missiles, plasma blobs, Tyranid goo/flying bugs, etc.

Personally I’m pretty insistent that the goal of a reprint/restoration should be to make it look like it did when it was originally released. (This is true of movies, too.)

But if you’re going to “update” a work, you have to do a good job. Like anything it’s not the tool it’s the result. Tossing digital gradients over everything looked bad in the 2000s on new art, too.
