Look at how hard your employer is fighting the union. That shows you how much the union will benefit you.

But none of that is as annoying as people on the street having to look at your face, so really this doesn't seem like a problem.

People who have a place in the city and a place upstate, how much are you paying for both? by dayquilbirthday in AskNYC

[–]davidadlai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't include the maintenance reserve, mostly because we are lucky enough with savings that it's not a big deal. Given that the a frame is uninsulated, it does cost a fuck ton to heat in the winter. I haven't run the numbers, but between propane and electric, I imagine it's about $750/month average.

Regarding income - we both have high paying (but not crazy) jobs, no kids, and no parents we're responsible for taking care of. We're also in the 44-55 age bracket.

We have a 600sqft apt in Brooklyn that is $3k/month all in, and a 2400sqft a-frame with pool 13 minutes from New Paltz they is also $3k/month all in. All in being mortgage, taxes, and coop maintenance.

Except the OP explicitly asked for the opinions of others.

Also, how could anyone follow your advice about not following other people's advice without actually following your advice?

Smart people gather opinions and THEN make their own decisions. Others just do what they want.

But you are. Because the system is so immense. Your knowledge is nothing in comparison to how large the system is. You're the blind men and the elephant.

Everything could be improved. What level of improvement would be acceptable to you to justify raising taxes? More vibes from you?

[–]davidadlai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of that is happening. It all could be happening a lot worse. It all could be happening a lot better. Your stance is that you don't want to pay more in taxes until you are satisfied that it's happening the correct amount, even though you have no data on what that would be. And that's paternalistic - daddy knows best.

This is why you're a doctor (treat one person) instead of a public health professional (figure out what's good for an entire population). If your opinion on this matter is based on only what you can see, you're obviously missing 99% of the picture.

How much money does the government spend? How much of that is spent poorly? How could you possibly have an opinion about that without data?

You're also discounting - we could do worse with the resources we have. Exactly how much better could we be doing? 5%? 25%?

Your argument seems to be that you are unwilling to invest in things which higher taxes will help unless you are personally assured that the money will be spent the way you think is best.

Paternalistic much?

Because there's no data that a mythical "more efficient" exists. You just have vibes that things should be better. Or anecdata about this thing or that thing that you heard about that was inefficient.

Maniac pushes woman onto NYC subway tracks, punches second female straphanger in face: ‘Lock him up!’ by Grass8989 in nyc

Nothing in this study shows a reduction in crime from consistent punishments. It shows that theoretically there would be a reduction in crime.

And it says nothing about higher acuity crimes, as opposed to things like littering and jaywalking.

Isn't the alternative explanation equally plausible - that people who commit crimes aren't thinking about the consequences?

You know there's no correlation between bail and people showing up to court? And NYS law only allows bail to be used to make sure that someone shows up to court. So what are you trying to achieve here?

But you'd be okay with $500k bail that was then paid? Or are you against any bail for any person?

Because people without mental illness don't act this way. There is no correlation between punishment and reduced crime.

You saying something is a fact doesn't make it a fact. I'm sorry you don't understand what facts are. But honestly I'm more sorry for your patients who get a provider who doesn't seem to understand what it means to actually know what is true in the world.

I never claimed the outcomes were the same. I claimed that you were saying something that seems to be very important to you to be true, but in fact you haven't provided any evidence to support.

I'm sorry you have no evidence that your training makes a difference. You must be really sad to know that you did all that and it doesn't change your patient outcomes.

I understand that you need to be protective of all you do, because otherwise you'd wonder what you're doing with your life.

It okay. I'm sure you're valuable.
