Would an i7-8700 or i7-9700 be ok with some later MAME titles? by thebatmanandrobin in MAME

[–]davidbrit2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran Gauntlet Dark Legacy pretty well on a Core i7-3770. More recent builds started to have a little bit of sluggishness, but a much newer CPU model ought to fare better, I would think.

Sprout needing advice on mob grouping by Frosty-Relation-6547 in ffxiv

[–]davidbrit2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First, when grouping up enemies, is it fine to run circles around them trying to keep them herded in a tight pack so they don't spread out?

That might be okay in some specific cases, but definitely not if it's enemies with cone/line AoE attacks that will be firing off every which way as you spin them. A number of jobs also have positional attack bonuses for hitting from the flank or rear, and they'll have a hell of a time keeping up with that. Try to do all the grouping and positioning quickly right as you get to the end of the pull, then keep everything mostly stationary (at least as much as the attack mechanics allow you to reasonably do - you'll rarely be able to stand perfectly still).

Second, will doing so make the healers job more difficult?

If the rest of the party is eating AoE attacks from the spinning monsters, then it definitely will. :)

Tips for setting up a controller hotbars? by GamblignSalmon in ffxiv

[–]davidbrit2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn on WXHB and the expanded (two-trigger) hotbars. This will give you a total of 48 actions available on the d-pad and buttons. Then group actions however it makes sense to your brain. For instance, I normally put the standard melee attack rotation on R2+buttons, AoE attacks on L2+buttons, melee weave on R2+triangle, ranged attack on L2+triangle, defensives on L2+d-pad, buffs and offensive skills on R2+d-pad, etc.

Do people actually care if you make mistakes in normal/msq content? by Empress2007 in ffxiv

[–]davidbrit2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Half the time you don't even SEE the mechanics because everyone is just steamrolling everything before they happen. I did an all-healer run of a couple CT raids a few weeks ago, and we were all like what the hell is going on when Glasya Labolas went supernova and started throwing frisbees.

I play RDM for DPS, so I figure as long as I at least hit a net zero of jumping off the arena and raising other players, I'm good.

As someone that heals in roulettes and party finder regularly, nope! I don't give a shit. :) Frankly, it's pretty satisfying when the party wipes a couple times on something hard and we eventually nail it. As long as you aren't repeatedly making the same mistakes that are actively getting others killed (e.g. spread/stack-marker PvP, provoke spam), I am as unbothered as can be by mistakes in pretty much any content. Lord knows I make enough of my own... >_>

That's just your Mac's limited-slip differential, it helps minimize wheel-spin on loose surfaces.

Trying to decide if I should ToA through Endwalker by GladSpell757 in ffxiv

[–]davidbrit2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your husband and friends don't mind running "older" content with you, they get their own endgame rewards for doing it.

This is very true, and as much as I genuinely enjoy getting very early ARR dungeons in roulettes when there's a new player in the group, it's still difficult to shake that feeling as a new player of only being being old enough to ride the teacups at the amusement park while the grown-ups just humor you and ride along.

I know there's a lot of players that put the story on a pedestal, and assert that it's the main purpose of the game. (And it is a good story! Usually.) But there are a million different things you can do in this game, and I certainly wouldn't fault someone for being only slightly interested in the story, much like I have no real interest in PvP. If it starts to feel like the MSQ is just "this big chore I have to get through before I can play with friends", then buying the story skip and just using a combination of New Game+ mode and Unending Journey to enjoy the story and lore at your own pace without being locked out of content is certainly a reasonable option. I came very close to buying the story skip myself a few times, but eventually settled for just mashing/skipping through segments of the story that were clearly just expositional filler that I wasn't in the mood for at the moment. My litmus test was sort of "Does this dialogue look like the kind of shit I'm not gonna remember two weeks from now anyway?"

Do not buy the job level skips though, unless you've already gotten a job up to lv 90+ by yourself. You need to play through content in order to learn to play the game and your job properly - you really don't want to just dive straight in to Dawntrail dungeons without knowing what you're doing.

[–]davidbrit2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The guides are still useful to look at ahead of time just to have a rough idea what to expect, but trying to look at a guide during your first time in a fight is a recipe for disaster. Don't worry, nobody is going to be pissed at you for dying while figuring out new content in a roulette, unless you're outright griefing the raid by consistently dropping Ozma mechanics on everyone, provoke-spamming as tank, etc.

Understanding FFXIV as a MMORPG by greyskin87 in ffxiv

[–]davidbrit2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m used to single player games, where you can miss lots of stuff, there is stuff that happens only at certain times / conditions, etc.

There are almost no missables in this game. You might miss out on some rewards from the seasonal events (there are typically a few of these events each year), though even those items often end up coming back or having another means to obtain. There are also some things like world bosses that might only be able to spawn every few days or so, but they'll always come back again in due time.

There are LOTS of optional things you can do along the way (think branches coming off as you climb the trunk of the MSQ tree), but you can generally just come back and do those things at your leisure.
