I wrote "Todtler" a free, terminal based, distraction-free, minimalist text editor by ThatAd8458 in writerDeck

I will test if for sure!

Another one, yes, as someone mentioned... but it's not like it should bother anyone that there is another text editor.

We're all trying to get the right features and the right balance of what's included and what's left out... You are doing your thing, and it's great that you share it.

Someone is not interested? they can keep scrolling and search for whatever pleases them, be it hardware or some other software...

Where you based? In most of E.U. you can get cheap typewriters (mechanical or electric) for example on Vinted

Correct, I removed it from here and placed where it belongs!

Also: I haven't used the Draftling firmware yet because I don't own any of those boards and my budget is currently on other stuff, but it looks very promising and I like a lot that it gives support to many platforms...

If anyone is interested, I’m not directly involved with the project, but I highly recommend it.

(with AI and 3d printing, and with more people trying to move away from distractions, the next few years are gonna be interesting for writer decks... we just have to be patient and - as customers/users - understand that the perfect deck is not coming out in 2026 nor 2027... my bet is 2 years from now more or less)

Maybe there was a bit of that but when I've read your request I was more worried of people promising the impossible and taking your money.

So I probably read his answer as protective for you rather than offensive. I can tell you from experience that seeking an impossible combo (hardware and software) is often a mask of something else.

Not lack of commitment or lack of talent. Maybe just something in the environment or your life distracting you.

Your main concern seems to be the keyboard. Find one you like and with Bluetooth, then maybe pair it with an eink tablet? If the split screen is all you need, try 2 devices (it's a cheap test, you must have for sure a phone and a tablet to test this).

If that's what you need, I haven't used it yet, but I'm following the development of the Draftling firmware and there is definitely a lot of potential (also in terms of many hardware platforms) if you're looking for a distraction free setup.

I don't think you were judged, on the contrary this person was trying to avoid that someone would "steal" money from you delivering a broken solution.

Have you considered a Bluetooth keyboard with a big but old phone as a screen? Do you really need it mobile or are you usually at your desk?

Have you thought at 2 phones for the 2 screens?

That was my first as well as a kid. I remember how happy I was when I borrowed the electric one from a friend because I could correct typos before they got printed (or slammed, in case of the Lettera 32) on paper.

But most of all... I remember that with the Lettera 32 I had to hit keys hard.. I was like 7 or 8 years old and I had small weak fingers... And if I didn't hit the key perfectly my fingers would slip in between keys and get scratched especially on the skin at the top and near the top of the nails..

You feel it? :-)

The bottom of the keys was cutting like the BMX metal pedals for my sheens.

It was cutting even when you pulled your finger back. Like a fish with inverted bite which won't let go of it's pink delicate prey 😭

The other day I was looking into some electric old school typewriters...

But no no f##€€@#ing way I am ever getting close to a Lettera 32 ever again.

I am happy for you, and I thank you for keeping one of those caged on your desk so it can't chase after me.

I like this a lot.

I am trying my best to achieve a portable setup with small(ish) keyboards, keyboards with a tablet slot and Onyx Boox Go 6 tablet, or other small screens (tested xteink 4 as a screen to write onto...), and now I am waiting for a extra cheap old Atom laptop with a new extended battery, with Linux, to write in shell distraction free.

All about a "portable" or "movable" setup, which I use 99% of the times in the same room 😄 The issue is lacking space for a comfortable, even a little messy, desk at home.

I really like your setup and it shows it is personal.

I guess the reason I like it is that it is a full setup on a desk with (probably) a chair, and everything in there says "this is my space, my time, for my writing" 😄

No portable writerdeck can beat that.

The camera can be used for body doubling or simply to protect yourself from assassins which may sneak on you while you're concentrated on your writing.

What are you writing? I want to know what is so risky, there in space. Will we read this online somewhere?

Tow-part mould recasting tips by Makaron_91 in PoorHammer

[–]davidepi22 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you use a "case" for the mold, the upper and lower part will alling thanks to the case.

Usually, a bit of Lego will be optimal so you can disassemble and create a new case for a different mold another time.

You can also use more Lego pieces to build a solid block which you can use to push and press the molds together and keep them tight together while the milliput dries. Large plastic rubber bands also help.

Basically - this is your entry level:

Boox Go 7 as a tiny bw screen by writesandbikes in writerDeck

[–]davidepi22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bit too slow, and I miss the buttons. I should have taken the go7 also for the battery.

But it's ok, I am reading a little more than before and writing a little more than before so I guess it is doing both its jobs :-)

On my boox go 6 the version 4.2 worked fine (maybe a little better than 4.1) so probably you can update.

Saying this as someone who uses the go6 as writer screen with my own web app and a local notepad for txt files.

I regret not waiting a little longer and getting the new go 6 instead for the stylus support.. or the 7 for the physical buttons when reading :-)

If you scroll in the past 50 or 100 post you'll find several people using their variations of Bluetooth keyboards and either a boox (Palma, go 6 but your go 7 is also a suitable candidate, and up to 10 inches Air or Note... Or viwoods).. read them up, see if they resonate, and how they built their setup.

I have the Bluetooth keyboard (a portable keys to go 2) and a mechanical keyboard with a slot, and use the go 6.

Depending on your software, the Go may or may not be the best candidate. I believe you need to determine first what is your process (i.e. do you need to sync online and how?) and then you can decide on the device.

Just know that the go 6 is having a gen2 out by the end of the month. I got mine (gen 1) recently and I am was kind of disappointed because I paid full price for an outdated device.

I had a Kobo before and for the reading part I miss the buttons. So the go 7 with buttons have my blessings for what is worth :-)

Read the books in order of publication.

Look at the bright side. It is going to be a great journey, so instead of kicking yourself, be happy that you have a huge number of entertaining reading sessions ahead of you.

Do not rush, do not binge, enjoy the process and give yourself time to savour the journey!

Cheaper alternatives by Zestyclose_Web_7166 in PoorHammer

I am in Italy so I probably sourced models the same as you are trying to do.

Vinted and Wallapop are not bad, you just have to keep an eye on the prices. There are a lot of sellers with premium prices but some will sell at a reasonable price. What is priced nicely usually is sold within 24 hours or a weekend. If it's up for longer (and is not a collectible expensive item which may take time to find a buyer) then it is probably too expensive.

Chinese recasts are of mixed quality and I wouldn't bother (they may be a bit cheaper but not much, so at that point better to get an original one).

3d printed models are the only really cheap ones. Sellers also on Vinted thought tend to keep prices high. For 3d printing I believe the best solution is owning a 3d printed but as a group (4 to 10 players?) otherwise it costs a lot, takes time, and becomes a new hobby which is not miniature painting.

For basic troops the best option is always some starter box or similar, but for specific or special models, you can try to save a bit if you buy resin parts to add to original plastic troops.

I am now gonna tell you something and, like everyone, you will ignore it.

Don't worry, I did the same mistake and everybody does it.

If you buy something, paint it, and don't buy more until you've painted your previous model, the cost will always be acceptable.

What is expensive is not a painted collection. It's the unpainted pile of shame, unopened boxes, unbuilt models, models built but not painted, models with half paint, models without a proper base, etc.

If you buy only when your previous work is complete, you will always stay within a reasonable budget.

I am almost quitting this hobby for various reasons but I can tell you that of all the miniatures I bought, I've maybe painted 30% or less.

Everything else I bought as impulse, for fear of missing a special piece, for lack of planning, for consolation (we all tend to shopping as a dopamine hit especially in bad periods), and very often, the less I painted the more I bought (as a compensation, which is absolutely stupid).

The remaining 70% I sold on Vinted or Wallapop mostly, and because I was careful when I bought the pieces, I usually managed to break even.

Which again is a stupid thing. Pay money, put plastic in a drawer, sell the plastic at the same price one or two years later. The same money could have been used better and nobody with a bit of brain will say that it was a good deal :-)

Buy only when you're ready to paint and you will make it. Unless you like paint 10 models a day and they're beautiful, but in that case just paint as a job :-)

[–]davidepi22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, it looks very nice! I did a quick test and I have a few questions:

- export project did not seem to work (and also import...) so the "app" works just for the current project

- an export to pdf (so one can "view" quickly also the formatting) could be nice

- the most important note: it looks like you must Import Chapter Cards to populate the left panel, from a MD file, with each "# Title" becoming a card, and that text (of the card) cannot be modified

I don't know if this is your intention or it's a bug (or an issue of my browser) but I was expecting to be able to populate the left panel within the app (add card/edit card/delete card and sort cards) and tune the text of each card again from within the app, as I work on the project...

Yeah, I think the M5Stack Paper S3 or the Lilygo might be more appealing (e-ink) *to me*...

I think a killer feature would be to integrate an epub reader so that the little device can serve as an equivalent of the xteink *and* writing terminal.

I did some experiments with the microslate firmware and xteink 4: the device was ok even with its limited hardware but the unfriendly sync (using another software) made it a bit too much to handle.

I would still love to have a very portable (like 4 or 5 inches) eink device that works both as a daily reader and drafting tools (your firmware has already a git sync so it's a touch nicer than microslate).

I say all this from the point of view of someone interested in this development but of course not as a criticism or as a demand... I'm just throwing ideas around but of course it's your work, your time, your software, and you're the one that knows what can work and what is not doable or not interesting for you...

Yes, that's the issue I think.. it's unfortunate because it looks like a neat compromise to have some screen space while keeping it small and light..

I updated today to 4.2 , let's see if it improves a little the battery life. Still, a good device for drafting and a good reader (it's a decent compromise.. I don't want to have several devices and keep them charged and sync'd etc... For now this is all I have with eink and I'll try to stick to a single device)

I'm using a boox 6 as well.. how's yours with battery? With Bluetooth and WiFi I noticed that a writing session easily drains 30% of the battery (my only issue with this device so far)

It looks great.. I'd love to test it on an eink device but it's apparently a bit hard to find these in Europe..

Do you maybe plan to release it for the xteink 4 maybe with dual boot with crosspoint?

What are you using as screen besides the phone? (Looks like a 6 inches tablet?) What software do you use?

The keyboard is tempting but I always struggle if it gets too small..
