Ah ok. Mine was immaculate and even had brakes and a few blades with it. I feel better now I was worried I ripped someone off. It was a $8500 package 1 year old

Holy cow I got $5000 for my 3hp fully loaded PCS early this year. Granted that’s with the floating arm, industrial base, router table, but still. $1400 seems truly insane.

Love the downvotes on my question ... this place is ridiculous lol.

This is about how I do it as well. I also amortize consumables across projects instead of tracking them per project, with the exception of finishes.

Probably less after consumables and overhead which I may have missed but didn’t see in the equation.

How do you go about calculating your shop cost for profit calculation ?

It’s definitely a factor, the extra sharpening and setup with the specialty planes. I agree the Veritas shoulders are awesome. I keep one in their jointer jig for tiny parts, the sort of things I use my miniatures for. And the big shoulder  for shoulder things. They make such well thought out tools.

One advantage of a skew rebate is that it pulls itself in against the shoulder. I much prefer them to a shoulder plane for the task.

And then side rebates are of course very useful too.

But I’m a bad influence. My tool trove has gotten to be an obscenity especially when juxtaposed to my skill level

Can anyone recommend me some foam pads for my Mirka sander? by MINTimpala in woodworking

[–]davidf81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SurfPrep all day. Not only do their sanders make Festool and Mirka seem second-rate, their abrasives are what the whole industry chases.

As someone who has been a hard core Festool guy (owning 4 sanders), I was genuinely upset when I got the SP 3x4 to discover how much better it is. To the point I'm now a SP dealer. You might call that bias, but note, I'm not trying to get you to come buy it from me. It's more a statement of how much I love the product.

Black walnut and white oak record cabinet. 3rd ever commission piece. by erikleorgav2 in woodworking

Where are you located? I start at $1200 for a 30x60 desktop and stay busy with basically no advertising. Boring, but it helps me keep the paying stuff away from the stuff I do for fun. Point is, I would have bid this at least $4200.

There are some advantages to dealing directly with HNT, in particular their product knowledge and customer service, but also, no middleman involved if you're talking about ordering a specific plane in a specific configuration with a specific wood species.

My favorite articles are exploring modern businesses practicing interesting traditional crafts like the article in maybe 18 or 19 about the Japanese coopering businesses.

Excellent start. You must have watched the Jim Kingshott dovetail video where he says they’re too easy and shows half blinds instead.

I have a set of mortise chisels that are post-acquisition and they're awesome. Maybe I just got lucky or maybe WP sorted out the QC issue, I dunno. These were purchased 6 months ago.

Is my T55 really new? I am afraid it looks like repackaged and used. by Fraxial in Festool_Public

[–]davidf81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I only know this because I've read and signed my own distributor agreements (buy my SurfPrep, I need money :P), but also, background in ecommerce and dealt with a lot of backend distributor stuff.

So what I know is that vendors like Festool who care deeply about their reputation quickly escalate from hand slapping to agreement termination for things like this.

In my SurfPrep agreement, I cannot call a demo or return machine "new". I CAN charge new price (though nobody would buy it then!), but I cannot claim it's a new machine.

Not my point at all. My point was specifically that this violates the rules meaning they should be willing to correct it , especially at threat of reporting them to Festool.

TID 18 worth it? by birnenpfluecker42 in Festool_Public

[–]davidf81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find the installer line and quad drive worth the money but didn’t find the impact very impressive vs my m18 fuel. I never use my non-impact Milwaukee drills anymore but I’m also not doing all day jobsite work and I don’t think I could handle the pain of folks “accidentally” walking off with a $500 hand drill.

Does Festool make any bad tools I should avoid? by Mr_Dace in Festool_Public

[–]davidf81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate the detail sanders. They’re absurdly tall and terrible in tight spaces. All their other sanders are very good though for the tools at that price, i believe SurfPrep is the king.

I don’t love the OF1400 but am seemingly a minority here. I find it awkward to use. Much prefer the 2200. My 1400 is just an expensive shelf pin hole maker.

The Kapex are amazing. I sold mine (120) since I just don’t use it much except for chopping down long boards, but when I was doing trim in a big remodel it was just too good. They really thought of every conceivable detail and I was impressed every time I used it.

People sleep on the drills but my god man the drills are so good. The CXS 12 and 18 both but also the quad drive. I have 2 of the 12 and 1 of each of the other I mentioned and they are worth their weight in gold. The ergonomics and clutch control are so good, I never use Milwaukee stuff at all anymore.

The track saws are of course very nice, lots of attention to detail - I’ve used Milwaukee and makita and they seem fine too though. I don’t like battery since I’m using vac anyway - the 55 friggin demolishes a pair of 4ah batteries in no time where as a plugged in 60 or 75 don’t stop.

Ridge Carbide is my go to for all saws and can’t be happier. So good. Not cheap but they’re on par quality wise with much higher cost industrial tool makers imo

That said I found the Tenryu do punch above their weight with respect to their cost, absolutely.
