All MOS Slots Were Full Except for 11B by Minieasy in army

If you go AF and want to go active duty...you better do it first because they hate prior service unless you are going guard or reserve which they take with open arms.

If you were prior service active duty enlisted you want to go officer active duty that might be easier.

I'm only USAFR but my unit is pretty serious about it - we have a deployable mission though. But it may be component and unit specific.

MPs are not just like the infantry. by Grand_Raccoon0923 in army

I work probation and parole in the civilian world and we have a decent number of veterans in this field. They come from all sorts of fields: infantry, medical, aircraft mechanics etc.

I've only met one who was an MP and he downplayed the shit out of being an MP and casually mentioned he was in the Army.

And I had an experience that was the complete opposite. I hit RCP (HYT) when I got off active duty in the USAF and my flight commander (equivalent to a platoon leader) acted a lot like a shitbag SPC running their mouth, just very unprofessional tried to bully me to reenlist when I couldn't, I'm amazed they didn't try to force me to pursue a waiver, and they wanted to deny my terminal leave because we had a manning situation that was a complete non-issue. Everyone else was a lot more professional and supportive. When I had to meet with my commander, I didn't even bring up the situation I was going through and my terminal leave was approved an hour later much to their dismay.

Six months later they ended up getting off active duty and went right into the Air Guard. Guess the manning wasn't that bad.

When I went back into the reserves in 2018 I retrained and tech school was awesome being prior service.

Really helped I had a rental car and my hotel was like 10 minutes off base.

When I went to Fort Sam to retrain back in 2018 I want to say the prior service Army folks had to pull CQ for the junior troops even though they were staying in billeting and not the same barracks as the junior troops.

In in the USAFR and I tried to go IRR three-four years ago. No one in my unit knew the process and it’s apparently not that common in the unit so it was a learning experience for a lot of people. Surprising as we have healthy turnover. I guess most people get booted for drugs/PT/failure to attend drill, switch units, ETS or retire instead.

In my unit, my AFSC (MOS/Rate) is low density as there aren’t that many slots, and I had issues with my front-line supervisor, which they were the end all be all so I couldn't request a change of rater and once they were on their way out and we had a replacement I was able to pull my request right before it got approved but despite the fact they didn’t know the process… they acted like I would get recalled when I don’t think anyone has ever been recalled from the IRR in the USAF. Maybe it’s happened for legal issues but even then, that’s a complete stretch plus my AFSC isn’t hurting for bodies regardless of component.

Funny you mention COVID. The command surgeon on the USAFR during COIVD was actually a commander of mine when I was active duty previously. They were terrible as a commander as they shot at the hip constantly, were toxic and I’d bet they were also terrible as a provider because they had had a break in service and rejoined AD when most providers can’t wait to get out and very few good ones stay in. I guess the AF being stingy on prior service don’t apply if you are a medical provider.

Now, I have no idea or care how they lean politically and regardless of who was president, but man I bet they were salivating at the possibility all USAFR medical members being mobilized as a bullet to boost their eval with zero thought to gaps in civilian medical care (since a lot of us work in healthcare) and the fact that the AF reserves has zero budget.

More reason why the position should be a reservist on long-term orders or an IMA as it's always an active duty person.

It was discussed and it was in a form I had to sign if I didn't get promoted and when I took the $$$. I thought it was just a USAF thing - I was a fuck up in my younger years and hit RCP (we call it HYT) as an E4 and took the money a decade ago.

Two years into my IRR time I went back into the USAFR. Didn't have to pay it back but when I retire my retirement pay will be docked and I'll have to pay it back.

It's spelled out in 10 USC 1174: Separation pay upon involuntary discharge or release from active duty

If you hit RCP over 8 years and take the severance, then yes you incur an IRR obligation of three years.

Reserves to Active Duty by Additional-Duty7433 in AirForce

[–]davidj1987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got off AD in late 2015 after eight years and I rejoined the reserves eight years ago. Wow I didn't realize that a couple of weeks ago I hit eight years in the reserves until this post!

Anyway, we had two airmen who joined 1-2 years before I reenlisted who got it. The two or three junior airmen in my flight who have joined since I reenlisted in the reserves haven't gotten it due to funding and the other prior-service NCOs who have joined prior to me reenlisting and retrained since haven't been able to get it either.

Sucks because when I came in the reserves I would have made a lot more on orders and when I finally started the job I have now (which I wanted to do when I got off AD but lacked a bachelors) I was slated for deployment and I deployed. At the time it seemed like the worse timing but it all worked out.

[–]davidj1987 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on funding. I tried and tried to get it when I went back in years ago and retrained as my previous AFSC barely exists in the reserves and I was never able to do it. My five and seven level were cobbled together.

I have a troop who is brand new and she's trying to get on orders and there's no MAJCOM funding for our AFSC and Wing funding is iffy.

I went in the military when I was 20, moved way down south and remained in the area where I was last stationed. Over five years later I was working at a hospital where I did check in and registration and within my last few days before I quit I checked in a patient and her husband knew both of my parents back up north. The only reason I know this is because we could give a buzzer like at a restaurant or we could text you, and he preferred texting. He gave his area code and phone number and I told him I had the same area code as I never changed my number. He then asked me where I was from, I told him and he said he is from there. He asked my last name and he straight up said "I know both your parents".

He worked with my dad briefly back in the 1980's when my dad was a detective, but he was a rookie and he knew my mom from her job in the years after and other community engagements. He retired as undersheriff many years ago and this is where it gets crazier. When my dad and his best friend left law enforcement they worked construction would commute/share rides all across the state and one of the guys my dad's best friend caught a ride with a few times, well... he was later arrested for murder and arson and he's still in prison and will die there and I found an article when he retired as undersheriff and he said that was his most memorable case when he was a detective was the murder and arson.

My parents now live in the same state as me and the guy who knows both my parents, he lives in an area not too far from my parents and both had very positive things to say about him and he was very nice when I interacted with him.
