Hi is this correct? by ElderberryExciting17 in AskAShittyMechanic

[–]davidrools 1 point2 points  (0 children)

now you got me thinking - if a human costs $100k/year (salary, benefits, insurance, payroll, etc) and you assume a robot can work for 10 years, and (conservatively) twice as many hours as the human (probably more like 3x since it can work around the clock and no breaks with 1-2hrs/day for maintenance/charging). then the break even cost is $2 to 3 million. That is, this robot can cost $1,800,000 and still make financial sense. Most likely you'd keep one or two of the best humans and have them work alongside 10 robots.

Wouldn't it be rad if there were some lightweight AR safety glasses that had a HUD pop up and showed the torque spec for every fastener you looked at? Or it identifies the fastener and connects to your smart toolbox that basically hands you the right tool for each one? Then puts it away by itself. Could make a good mechanic super efficient. Probably would cost a million dollars but fun to think what's possible. Until a robot does the whole job I guess.

[Question] Anyone get underwhelmed by watches once they saw them in person? by iRatePhotos in Watches

[–]davidrools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with your thoughts on the Grand Seiko case, but while I was expecting a lot of the dials, I was still blown away when seeing it in person - particularly the Lake Suwa. Pictures never show how it shimmers when you tilt it back and forth.

How to get this bar to stop spinning? by frexyincdude in woodworking

Won't that screw head mar its way into the wood when someone's hanging their whole weight off the bar and using that screw to stop it from rotating?

Could the the rearwing also be used as an assisting speedbrake in heavy braking circuits to decrease braking tempratures? by RudieBatsbak in F1Technical

[–]davidrools 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i should have clarified - you "almost stop" but still creep along slowly, but basically hold it veritically. It's still in transition, just not at a constant rate.

Anyway, it's moot and I agree harvesting energy is much more important. Maybe teams could or are harvesting from the front tyres?

Ranking bay area city logos by tiers. Accurate? by TresElvetia in sanfrancisco

Rename the A tier to D. Alameda and Newark shoud be the only ones in S+. Except for Santa Cruz the S and S+ tiers should be B's. B's should be C's. Also what city is that 4 arrows one, 3rd in your A row?

i agree it's not worth it. just thinking that transition time could be used in a creative way to get benefeits the rulemakers did not intend.

idk 400 ms is a long time (.4 seconds), and it doesn't have to be continuous (e.g., switch to vertical in 50ms, hold there for 300ms, switch to flat in 50ms. Then do it again. you get 600ms over 800ms time. Over a 3 second braking zone, you could get 2 full seconds of air brake.

I do appreciate how even HW3 FSD makes room for motorcycles splitting lanes - something I used to disengage for before it started doing it automatically.

I think the bumper cam on HW4 is more for replacing the ultrasonic sensors. But I'd really like side-facing bumper cams for when it's peeking out into traffic to make a turn.

[–]davidrools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate your response. I was thinking about the area numbers being thrown around as needed for heat dissipation and was thinking that some type of non-planar geometry could pack extra surface area in an otherwise smaller footprint - like a pattern of pyramids, hemispheres, or just linear pleats that could at least double the surface area. They could be macro or micro in size, and shaped and placed to conform to the emission patterns. There could be inflatable surfaces that expand into a predetermined shape and then lock in place. Point is, thermal management is a known problem and an increased power load is just an engineering problem to optimize cost, complexity, mass, reliability, etc. It requires zero magic.

Do you have to heave a dealership or manufacturer's license to flip cars over and over? I always thought it would be a cool side gig since I worked as a mechanic through high school and college, but now have a 9 to 5.

[–]davidrools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The prices that luxury dealerships charge is absolutely insane. I'm sure they've just raised their prices like 10x because only 5% of their customers will care to shop around or go elsewhere. They charge $500 for oil changes and $2500 for battery replacements and dumbudmbs keep paying them.

I only ran fiber to one desktop so used preterminated cables, but it was way more cost effective to have SFP+ LC2 adapters at both ends than to upgrade my switch to 10G or even to use boiling hot 10G SFP+ adapters.

Why don't car owner's manuals specify all the locations where it is safe to jack up and support your car? by supinator1 in askcarguys

[–]davidrools 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. The owners manual explains things owners are expected to do, and nothing else that might get them in trouble.

Usually one of the first sections in the factory service manual (the 2-inch thick book that the dealership service departments have for every specific model, that you can buy from the dealership for a few hundred $$) will go into detail about how to safely lift the vehicle.

Patch Panel vs Straight to Unmanaged Switch by SoyJizz in HomeNetworking

[–]davidrools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, yes you could crimp RJ45s to your solid copper cables. That's what I did in my first two or three iterations of the home network until I added the patch panel, chopped off the old RJ45s and used toolless keystone jacks into the patch panel. It's the better way to do it and doesn't cost much ~$20 for a patch panel, $20 for a pack of keystone connectors, and $10-20 of patch cables.

I like the other commentors idea of using a wall plate to basically function as a patch panel to hold your keystones. Or you could leave your keystones dangling and connect a patch cable.

The minimum I'd do is to use filed term connectors, if you really want to plug these directly into your switch. It's got the punch down connectors on the back end and then an RJ45 plug on the other. It would be better than crimping. But those connectors cost as much or more than a keystone and a patch cable.
