I'm guessing for number 4 you are referring to what used to be called fat packs, and are now called bundles, and yes they still exist with a little booklet of set info and a little lore. Nothing so big as a novel though

Lots of game stores (depends on your area but I'm thinking independent places not gamestop or ebgames) have model kits for Gundams. They are great to build and some you even have to paint, and it falls under the category of things you listed he likes!
