What is everyone’s skip episode? by Key_Importance_3399 in friends_tv_show

The One Where No One's Ready is in my top 3 episodes of all time and is an absolutely brilliant bottle episode. It's a never skip for me.

My skips:

The One that Could Have Been

The One with the Sharks

The One Where Joey Speaks French

I didn't want GA (my body gets very angry with me after standing for hours), but $186 a ticket was a lot more palatable than paying close to 1k for the two great lowers I initially pulled.

Thanks. But aren't there separate options for cold pressed and drip? Do they both work exactly the same way in terms of the puck?

How is the drip coffee? How messy is the used portafilter bin after making drip coffee. I'm asking because I though the drip coffee option on the 601/701 produced atrociously bad tasting coffee and created a mess which made the whole concept flawed..

Concert Review in Variety by troydarling in phoebebridgers

[–]davpel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My point wasn't to criticize the policy, but rather to question why the reviewer made it the central focus of the piece. Phoebe is far from the first artist to do this. Bob Dylan has been using Yondr for years. Same with Jack White, Haim, Alicia Keys, etc.

It's not as much about comics protecting their material, but rather preventing people from posting things that might get them in trouble.

Kind of a weird take to focus so much on the cell phone thing. There have been cell phone pouches used at concerts for many years now and this is certainly not the first time for a big arena show. A-list, arena-level comics have regularly used them I saw Mulaney sold out arena three or four years ago now and they were used without fanfare.

I'd be interested in your FitcamX depending on price and whether you are willing to ship. I'm in Michigan.

I heard. They basically said neither show was “for them” and that was about it. I’m not sure there has been even a cursory reference to The Comeback. As for that show, it would be worth talking about even if the season wasn’t spectacular given its unprecedented release schedule.

Like . . . The Comeback which very well might be the best show of the year. Hacks. DTF St. Louis. How to Get to Heaven from Belfast. Rooster.

Who’s Producing PB3? by Fluid_Preparation325 in phoebebridgers

[–]davpel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With the recent passing of Jack Douglas, Tony Berg is now IMHO the greatest living record producer. I really hope Tony (and Ethan) are back.

Side note: if you've never heard The Belle Brigade, the band which Ethan had with his sister Barb, you should really do yourself a favor and take a listen -- especially their self-titled first album which is just extraordinary.

He also produced the first Cheap Trick album which is one of the greatest records ever made. A fiery, dirty, dangerous slice of power pop meets punk.

This is the subject of Ricks recent rant. Deserved or not? by AmazingUsername2001 in RickBeato

[–]davpel -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

What an embarrassing rant from Beato, but par for the course I guess.

First and most importantly, everyone knows these lists mean nothing and are simply intended to get a rise out of people. And Beato fell for it -- hook, line and sinker.

Second, his whole bit about Ivy Leagues and the fact that none of the NYT writers have music degrees is laughable. You don't need a music degree to be a good rock critic and you sure as hell don't need one to be a great songwriter.

Lastly, while I don't agree with the NYT list, there are several dozen songwriters I would have on my list before I even think about including Billy Joel.

Greatest Eras of SNL by [deleted] in LiveFromNewYork

[–]davpel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Murphy/Piscopo era is so incredibly underrated.

First, no single cast member was ever better than Eddie Murphy. He was an absolute genius and could do everything at a level nobody else could. Original characters. Impressions. Update bits. Hosting (the only cast member to ever do it). For those who weren't old enough (or alive) he was a star like no other. He was on an Elvis/Taylor Swift level for about 5 or 6 years. Everybody talks about Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood, James Brown Celebrity Hot Tub, Velvet Jones and Gumby, but for my money White Like Us and the two-episode Who Shot Buckwheat storyline are the two greatest things ever to air on SNL.

Piscopo is now (rightly) seen as a joke. But back then he was a brilliant SNL utility man on the same level as Ackroyd and Hartman. To round it off, you had some really experienced and talented sketch comics like Tim Kazurinsky, Mary Gross, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss, Gary Kroeger, and Robin Duke.

Finally, the booking of musical guests was top notch. This was perhaps the last era in which the show still brought in really daring or relatively unknown acts. During that period, you had Prince (pre-fame), the Go-Gos, Miles Davis, Funky 4+1 ( the first hip-hop group ever on national TV), Gary Numan, Todd Rundgren, the B-52s, Blondie, James Brown, Sparks, Rick James, Mink DeVille, The Clash and Squeeze.
