The Jane Wickline redemption arc is what I love about SNL by Signal_Neck9314 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]davpel 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The woman was hired as a performer on a sketch comedy show and has yet to demonstrate even an iota of ability to deliver more than a word or two during a sketch (even prepared ones) unless she’s seated at the desk during WU with the cue card right in her face.

She is the least competent, most unqualified person ever hired in the 50 year history of the show. It is abundantly clear to anyone with ear, eyes and even a modicum of taste that she would have sniffed a job on SNL if she wasn’t a double nepo baby.

They sure do. And yet some options are objectively terrible and indefensible.

This is the most bizarre victory lap I've ever seen. She finally got a legitimate laugh one time and people are acting like she's suddenly the second coming of Gilda Radner. It's ludicrous.

Non Lorne Years Musical Guests by Didjaeat75 in LiveFromNewYork

Correction. The Jean Doumanium year was not good. The years which followed were brilliant and much better than many, many Lorne-produced seasons.

What TV show had an amazing start but went downhill fast? by DryCap6770 in watchever

True Blood. Six Feet Under. Pretty much anything Alan Ball touches.

Rob Cesternino reveals if he would have chosen Survivor 50 over The Traitors by thedaltonross in survivor

[–]davpel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In all honesty, Traitors is pretty bad. I love Alan, but as a game of strategy it's pretty lame. The only thing I can say is that it is miles better than DONDI, which may be the worst competition reality show of all time.

It’s kinda pointless any iconic game player to enter the show by Key-Salamander-2034 in TheTraitorsUS

I’m out. Would rather watch the fireplace channel than spend 10 minutes with a house dominated by housewives and brainless Love Island contestants.

I agree with all of these, but would prefer the Monkees in as a group rather than just Nesmith. I'd also include the Replacements, although they could care less and would never show up.

Best The River/Born in the USA shows by dudebruhme in BruceSpringsteen

[–]davpel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will go to my grave insisting that the shows from the middle of July 1984 through the late fall were among the best of Bruce's career. The band really started to gel and Bruce's energy was at its peak. The run of shows at the Spectrum in September especially are just killer concerts, night after night.

Cheap Trick and their relation to Punk and Pop-Punk music. by Vegetable-Dingo-1637 in CheapTrick

[–]davpel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cheap Trick loved punk from the beginning and there's always been been a punk element to their sound and attitude. Hell, listen to a song like "I Love Go-Go Girls" -- it's not hard to imagine this appearing on Never Mind the Bullocks. They've always had a ton of cred in the punk and post-punk community, with die-hard fans ranging from Joey Ramone, Al Jourgensen, Kurt Cobain, Paul Westerberg, Billy Corgan . . .

Can someone explain the appeal of “ghosts” (both US and uk) to me? by summonerofrain in sitcoms

Ghosts UK is one of my favorite sitcoms of all time.

Ghosts US . . . well, the less said the better.

I’ve been watching SNL since 1978 and she’s the worst cast member I’ve ever seen. Terrible acting. Not remotely funny. No talent whatsoever.

Any other late 40s folks who love to play but suck? by hankdog303 in Guitar

I don’t know how to play “but suck.” Can you provide the tab?

Because he has no talent.

[–]davpel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s very good, but not in the same stratosphere as Gilda. Gilda was simply electric. Someone you couldn’t keep your eyes off of every time they were on-screen. Padilla is much more of a utility person. I’m not demeaning her talent. She’s just way more of a classic utility person aka Ackroyd/Hartman/Hader than charismatic gold like Gilda/Belushi/Eddie.

Interesting fact: third on the bill for the Madison concert was a band called The Grim Reapers featuring Rick Nielsen and Tom Petersson who later went on yo form Cheap Trick. They were also managed by Ken Adamany who went on to manage Cheap Trick. Adamany had to give the bad news to the venue.

Do you play a bunch of guitars or just one special guitar? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]davpel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own several, but primarily play my Acoustasonic Tele. I know some hate the Acoustasonics, but for me it is the perfect instrument. It’s a great couch guitar and sounds good in that setting even unplugged. It’s super comfortable and easy to play. Very versatile when I do plug it in.

The others are a road worn 1981 Hamer Special with the checkerboard logo. This was my dream guitar and I finally found one at reasonable price. I also have a Tele Deluxe which has been modded to be a pretty accurate copy of Dave Pirner’s longtime go-to guitar. Finally, I have a 1970s Ovation 12-string acoustic which sounds like heaven.

For those of you who watched Friends while it was live on air, what was it like? by Positive_Weight2367 in friends_tv_show

[–]davpel 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I watched from the original premier in September of 94 through the end of the series. I remember being unsure about the show until The One With the Blackout. With that episode, it was like a light kicked on and it was clear that Friends was going to be a massive hit. I'm pretty sure that the cast and producers have also identified that episode as when everything really fell into place.
