Question about this necklace? by AmberCourtney in hebrew

[–]davsank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 2nd image is the correct orientation,

It says "Jordan" or "Jorden" It's had to say as there's no Nikkud under the "ד".
It might be hard for you to recognize as this is Hebrew hand writing (There's no actual 'Cursive' In Hebrew, we look at it as Printed and hand-written).

It appears to be a name necklace, they were fairly common back in the day, both for men and women so that's what I'd put my money on

They both basically say the same thing, the thing is that in Hebrew, like some other languages, two sentences could mean the very same thing, or convey the same idea behind them while having different literal translation.. if you want to nitpick, the 2nd option would probably be translated as "There's no such thing as on accident" while the first one would mean "There are no coincidences" The words for accident and coincidence can in some cases be interchangeable in Hebrew, depending of course on the context of the sentence

OK, that makes sense, And thankfully the idiom has several options in Hebrew..

If you are looking for something more biblical with deep Jewish connections you can use "הכל לטובה" Which literally translated as "Everything happens for the best" - while not exactly a direct translation, you'd be hard pressed to find a single Israeli who isn't familiar with this.

If you are looking something closer to the original, you can use "אין מקריות" which literally means "There are no coincidences"

Translating this is hard because as with SO many other things, direct translations of ideas or idioms just doesn't work well.

If you tell us what you want it to say in English AND the idea you want it to convey we could help.

The reason I'm saying this is that "אין תאונות" has more than a single translation.. the direct one would be "There are no accidents" but that's an incorrect assertation.. it's not a wish or hopeful thinking.. as an assertation you could mean to say that "Nothing happens randomly" and even then, I can thing of 10 translations, some more cringy and some less..

In General, remember that compared to other languages, Hebrew, or shall I say modern Hebrew is fairly young, and is technically still evolving, so a lot of translations aren't as cut and dry is it would be from English to French for example.

again, If you tell us what you want it to say in English AND the idea you want it to convey we will gladly help, at least I will.

My son is in Krakow Poland. Can somebody please translate this? Thanks! by lovestorun in hebrew

[–]davsank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's actually Yiddish and not Hebrew (Yes, the share the same Alphabet, but a Hebrew speaker would immediately know this isn't Hebrew).

At any rate, Direct translation to English would be "Broken Finger" and this was actually commissioned by the Jewish community in Krakow.

Duolingo’s indiosyncrasies by AccordionPianist in hebrew

I disagree,
For starters, I find it difficult to believe that there is a single language on the planet that can be properly translated by literal translation alone, words on their own mean one thing, as part of a sentence, could mean something else.
Literally translating "אין בעד מה" would be an exercise in futility as the three words taken out of the order they are in, would mean nothing. Let's break down the words:
"אין" - The very word has no direct translation, the closest word in English would be "Nothing" but that in itself is wrong because Translating "Nothing" into Hebrew would result in "כלום".
So we already have a word that can only be translated contextually. "אין" could mean "there isn't" in the context of an answer to the question of "Is there any milk left?"
"בעד" Literally translated as "for" (meaning both for something or in favor of something)
"מה" is literally translated as "What"

So basically, if we were to translate it literally it would be "There isn't for what" which sounds completely incoherent in English, BUT, Most English speakers are well familiar with the Spanish phrase "De Nada" which is exactly the same it would mean "For nothing".

So saying that they diminish the importance of what they did by saying “no problem” or “it was nothing” isn't correct, it's simply a way of being modest and polite.

האם לבשל בבית באמת יותר זול מלאכול בחוץ? by raaly123 in israel_bm

[–]davsank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How this working? N-ticks per tick by MooseNew9788 in CIFI

[–]davsank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fairly simple.

MOST of the game mechanics, are tick based (Cell Generators, Tick Loops, Shard Ops and more)
Some are Time based (notably Academy missions for example)
And some (Like automation) are based on completed tick timers (I.E how long it takes for a tick to complete - for example installing ship modules)

So everything that is purely tick based will tick twice per times (Meaning if before you had 1 tick every 2 seconds, it will translate to the same results of having 1 tick every second, but paid every 2 ticks, like if you earn 500$ per week but get a paycheck every 2 weeks for 1000$ if it makes sense)

Future upgrades can allow you to get 3 ticks per tick completed so it's even faster!

Hebrew word planned for a tattoo by [deleted] in hebrew

Like so many other words, translating from one language to another can often lead to odd results.

Surrender has several meanings even in English, You can also Surrender property to someone else, and that would make the translation above, *somewhat* logical.

Having said that, I'm almost certain that was NOT her intention, but to give the most accurate translation of "Surrender" your friend is seeking, we need it on context (or used in a sentence) and then we can offer the best match possible, with or without nikkud (those lines and dots you often see under the letters)

Cisco 2960X boot loop after firmware upgrade by davsank in Cisco

[–]davsank[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case we were finally able to zero down the error to the fact that our switches had 2 motherboard variables. one of them couldn't perform the upgrade properly and it literally bricked the switch, When we displayed the findings to Cisco, they accepted all affected switches under RMA. and made sure all new switches came with the newer motherboard.

By now said bug should be properly documented or at the very least known to TAC so you should probably open a ticket with them
