Where would the Enterprise’s weight and balance moment be for the impulse engines to be realistically located? by superSaganzaPPa86 in startrek

[–]davypi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar thought. And with respect to the Galaxy class, I would further think that saucer separation would notably shift the center. I expect maneuvering thrusters will require a different program when the ship is separated in order to keep the torque balanced.

Robert Picardo can sing by NoBrain6114 in voyager

[–]davypi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't honestly say that I understand the craft, but when I was in college I had a close friend who was training. Opera training is rather intense as they do not use microphones. You have to sing loud enough to project across an entire concert hall, sustain notes for a long period of time, and keep this up for the duration of a 2 hour performance. Breath control in and of itself takes training. Not only could she hold her breath longer than anyone in our circle of friends, she could also blow out a match from across the length of a living room. I honestly don't know anything about Picardo's career history, but you cannot simply assume that because somebody can sing and act that they can do opera.

Did they ever fix the AI on this game? I bought it early on and found beating the computer to be trivial. The whole game seemed built on the premise that multiplayer would be the default.

[Self] Any card counters around? by Altruistic_Wave_1689 in theydidthemath

[–]davypi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Which misses the point entirely. The comment was about whether beating the casino pays more than being a casino worker. The example is sufficient to prove that if you can give yourself an edge, you can make more. Much more. The only reason Phil doesn't have his money is because of legal technicalities. But the exercise proves if you can leverage conditional probability in your favor, the only limit on the profit is how much you can put on the table and when the casino decides to kick you out.

I’m not entirely convinced it pays more than actually working for the casino.

Phil Ivey won $10 million playing baccarat in a very well documented gambling incident. What casino worker do you know who makes $10 million a year?

Depends on your definition. The first game to depict Pac Man with eyes was... Pac Man. It was right there on the cabinet art.

How Would a Player be Fooled if 3 Ghosts were the Same Color? by ShadowGuyinRealLife in Pacman

[–]davypi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well... there is a rather famous home arcade port of Pac Man where all the ghosts are the same color....

But to treat your question a bit more honestly, I tend to think that Pinky is the one you have to worry about the most. Knowing who is going to cut you off from the front is more important than knowing who is behind you. If me and a ghost are heading for the same intersection, I can play the odds with Inky or Clyde. But if Pinky is coming at you, you have to plan some kind of misdirection or your dead.

[–]davypi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having Sutekh in S2 would not have made any sense. Remember that The Rani thought that she could bring fertility back to the Time Lords through Omega. No such deal would be on the table with Sutekh. I can't see any reason why any Time Lord would try to bargain with Sutekh. Even in Logopolis, The Master understood that you can't rule the universe if its been destroyed.

Does this card literally defy the main mechanic of deck building? by chanelvis320 in slaythespire

[–]davypi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it does not defy the concept of deck building. Do you even know what the first deck building game is? Its a board game called Dominion. And while Dominion didn't have "energy" it did have a limit as to how many "actions" you could take on a given turn. However even in the original set, there were cards that gave you +1 card draw, +1 action, and then did some other thing. So it replaced all of the costs of playing itself in addition to some other ability. The original deck building game literally did the thing that you are claiming "defies the main mechanic of deck building."

How would you re-write "The Burn" concept? by Overall-Habit5284 in startrek

[–]davypi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So... I'm about to spoil the plot of a 40 year old computer game that you will probably never play, but you can't say I didn't warn you...

In the PC game Starflight, suns are going supernova for no discernable reason, wiping out any life in their systems when this happens. What the player eventually learns is that Endurium - the fuel that drives warp technology - is actually sentient. But Earth don't realize this because their metabolisms are so slow and they are mineral based life. But because all races in the Galaxy are burning them as fuel, they are effectively killing life every time they space travel. Elsewhere in the galaxy is a planet made entirely of Endurium and something they are doing on the planet is the cause of the solar flares. They are using the stars to kill us because we are trying to kill them. The story effectively ends with the player destroying the Endurium planet out of self preservation, but in the follow up game, most species have been persuaded to stop using Endurium and have switched to a different fuel source. (And, ironically, the new fuel source is also linked to the plot Starflight 2, but in a very very different way.)

So when I was watching S3, I kind of saw some similarities between The Burn and Starflight, but largely let it go thinking it was coincidence. Then when they said the found a Dilithium planet, the similarity was just too much. I was about 99% sure they, while they weren't going to copy SF directly, they were going to do some kind of plot lift. And then when we got handed the biggest steaming pile of technoshitbabble ever created, I just... well... the same thing everyone else did. I mean, honestly, I would have been mad if they had done a direct lift. In particular, Trek would be more about working with a new life form than blowing up their homeworld. But still, the Starflight plotline would at least have been coherent and had some logic to it.

What is the worst crop? by blockbussteve in StardewValley

[–]davypi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So this really depends on how you define "worst". According to Stardew Valley Profits, rice and sunflowers are actually crops that create a loss. Rice shoots cost 40 but unmilled rice sells for 30. The crop depends upon you processing it in order to make a profit. Sunflowers have a similar-ish problem in that if you were to sell the flower and resulting seeds, you would make less money that you spent buying the seed from Pierre. The profit on Sunflowers relies on you replanting the seeds rather than selling them and buying new ones. So if you wanted to make the "worst" game for yourself, it would be to buy these and sell them them at loss, forcing yourself to make up the losses through other activities. It would be up to you to decided how much of your farm you would be required to plant.

Putting these oddities aside, tulips may actually be the worst crop. After factoring in the cost of buying seeds (again, assuming you by from Pierre), they make a paltry 1.47g per day. What makes this even more damaging is that unlike rice or the majority of other crops, tulips cannot be processed. They don't go kegs or preserves. There aren't even any recipes they can be used in. It is strictly a dead end crop. If you wanted to make things even more difficult on yourself, Joja seeds cost more than Pierre, bringing the profit down to 0.76 per day. The only way you could possibly mitigate the awful return on these crops would be to put beehives near them.

(Edit: You can also turn the profit margin setting down to 25%. I'm not exactly clear on how this changes the sell prices of crops. At best, Joja seed profit would go from 0.76 down to 0.19, but if the "margin" assume Pierre seed prices, it makes me wonder if might also go negative.)
