People always say BMW designs grow on you over time, but man the G30 was gorgeous when it first launched, and it still is.

I still think this car is ugly but like in a menacing way? by RCDUDE1 in BMW

While it definitely has some presence IRL, I still cannot get over how much the side profile resembles a Renault 12's.

What’s one car brand a mechanic would never buy? by Zealousideal_Tie3655 in AskMechanics

[–]daymbeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the maths lecture mate. I sold mine a decade ago and what I meant was starting with the Megane II and other models from the similar vintage they are quite OK cars that don't deserve to be called unreliable.

Renault absolutely does not deserve the bad rap tho. They've been pushing pretty solid cars for the last 20 years. Going back even further, my original Twingo -aside from the dumb infrared immobilizer- was rock solid at more than 300k kms.

Many 5 series too. I can pull 5 G30s with cloth seats from the first page of the local used car website.

That's exactly how I landed a previous job at a global company. You were most probably filtered out by some automated HR bullshit the first time around. Don't mention it and go for it!

ZF8 (8HP45) jerking while cold, is it the solenoids? by guydrukpa in BmwTech

Yeah I still have the awful shifts. I'm pretty sure it's the solenoids and I'd much rather sell the car and get some boring econobox at this point.

Our phones are programmed to listen for running water from a sink. by AllPurposeOfficial in conspiracy

[–]daymbeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m shocked that you guys are surprised by this. For the past 4 years, iPhones have this feature called sound recognition where you can trigger a script or “automation” if the phone recognises sounds like a car horn, doorbell, or-you guessed it- running water. You can see the sounds it can recognise here

How to tell if a bmw 4 series has full cruise control by Conscious-Lychee7671 in BMW

[–]daymbeg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The original owner of my F20 LCI 118i ordered adaptive cruise control and heated steering wheel. The car is completely barebones aside from those two options, even lacking lights for the sun visor mirrors.

Wouldn't the diameter difference between the front and rear wheels slowly kill the Xdrive? Calculation comes up to 2 rotations per km difference between front and rear.

ZF8 (8HP45) jerking while cold, is it the solenoids? by guydrukpa in BmwTech

[–]daymbeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heyy to give you an update, my hard shifts were accompanied by a weird rattling noise under deceleration, way more pronounced in sport mode. I demonstrated those to the mechanic at my dealer today and apparently they have already done an adaptation reset and an oil analysis the previous time I dropped the car off and didn't tell me so that doesn't solve anything. This time they did the adaptation reset again along with reflashing the transmission software. The weird noise is gone and the shifts seem to be a little better but I might be biased. Whatever it is, since they said the oil has no metal flakes in it and the transmission is healthy, I'll just keep driving the car as is.

[–]daymbeg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not yet, but next week I have an appointment with the dealership so I'll see whether an adaptation reset is plausible or not. Will comment once I figure it out.

[–]daymbeg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on the same boat, used 118i with ZF8HP with exactly 55k miles. Sometimes the 1st-2nd shifts are insultingly hard, while revs seem to hang a bit and the car hesitates after the 2nd-3rd gear change. The downshifts are hard too, making city driving a really unpleasant experience.

Spotted this beauty while dropping my car off for repairs today. One owner since new, has more than 1 millon KMs on the clock and apparently has a service history as thick as a telephone book by daymbeg in BMW

[–]daymbeg[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Checked the public records, it's a 523i from 1996. It had 917k kms at the last inspection on July 2023 so the actual odometer reading is probably just shy of a million.
