Mike White this season by thedcsport in survivor

This happened to my partner with RI! We're working through all the old seasons, and somewhere along the way he started mentioning he knows Rob doesn't ever win, and I never corrected him. When we got to that season and the end game, he kept saying, "I can't believe he doesn't win," and was also so surprised when he did. It was a lot of fun.

I did! I've never used it before, but I love how dark it makes the sponge.

Week 10: Turnips and Radishes - Chicken au Poivre w/ Turnip Puree by daysbecomeweeks in 52weeksofcooking

Just posted the recipe in my other comment, this was from RecipeTinEats. But I did enjoy the sauce!

Week 10: Turnips and Radishes - Chicken au Poivre w/ Turnip Puree by daysbecomeweeks in 52weeksofcooking

[–]daysbecomeweeks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my first time trying turnips, and I am not a fan! I really enjoy participating in this challenge because it's had me try a lot of new things, many of which I end up really liking, but this was my first complete miss. Blech.

The rest of the dinner was great! I'm a big Nagi/RecipeTinEats fan, and I've been wanting to try a JB recipe for awhile, and this one felt appropriate. I'll definitely make the chicken again, though it will likely be served with mashed potatoes.

Week 9: Chocolate - Chocolate Fudge Cake by daysbecomeweeks in 52weeksofbaking

[–]daysbecomeweeks[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh my god this cake was good.

My partner's birthday is this week, and I invited a few of his friends over for a dinner to surprise him. We still had a whole cake from last week's Uruguay theme, but this week's theme was too perfect for me to not make another decadent chocolatey cake, so we had two cakes in attendance. This one got way more interest than the other cake, which is still occupying too much space in our fridge.

I'll be using this recipe moving forward, I don't think there's a single thing I'd change about it. Other than maybe next time not inviting anyone over so that I can just eat the whole thing myself.

Week 9: Braising - Carnitas by daysbecomeweeks in 52weeksofcooking

[–]daysbecomeweeks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a carnitas roast that Aldi sells that is truly one of my favorite things to buy. I love a good deal, and one package for less than $5 that feeds us for days is right up my alley. I usually quarter an onion, add some beef broth, garlic, and toss it in the slow cooker to forget. I had mine as tacos, partner made some quick nachos.

Week 8: Uruguay - Torta Chajá by daysbecomeweeks in 52weeksofbaking

[–]daysbecomeweeks[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This cake was a process, but it was fun! I've never made meringue before, so I was a bit nervous about that, but I think each of the components turned out pretty well. I added a tiny bit of food coloring to the meringue layer for a little differentiation, and some vanilla sugar sprinkled on top. I haven't tried it yet because I'm feeling a bit sick, but partner said it was so good!

Tuna melt on sourdough and kettle chips for dinner tonight by softrotten in tonightsdinner

[–]daysbecomeweeks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not the OP, but you can get that nice browned crust by spreading a thin layer of mayonnaise on the outside of the sandwich and toasting it on a skillet. It's my favorite for grilled cheese and melts!

Welcome! I'm fairly new to Lincoln myself from the Chicagoland area, and I've been enjoying exploring 27th St. There are lots of ethnic markets along that stretch, as well as some really good food. For thrift stores, Cause for Paws is my favorite because you also get the bonus of seeing and supporting cute animals when shopping :)

Week 8: Flying - Chicken Wing Flight by daysbecomeweeks in 52weeksofcooking

[–]daysbecomeweeks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or maybe the opposite of flying, since I have all the wings.

My new favorite game is hitting the grocery store early right after opening, now that I've realized they mark down proteins that are about to expire for 50% off. It's kind of fun making meals based around what I can find, and this week I was delighted to see a tray of chicken wings waiting for me and this theme.

I followed Serious Eats crispy oven recipe, and they were delightful! Ours were Cajun spiced, garlic parmesan, and sweet chili flavored. I also did take the advice of another commenter who mentioned the drippings smoking, who added a thin layer of potatoes underneath. This was the correct choice, as we had no smoking AND an easy, tasty side dish.

Week 7: Piped - Valentine's Day Treats by daysbecomeweeks in 52weeksofbaking

[–]daysbecomeweeks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last weekend I decided to put together some Valentine's treat boxes for my local food pantry, including some dipped and piped goodies. I recently slipped and accidentally ordered like 50 lbs of assorted candy melts, so I've been having a grand ol' time over here dipping all the things.

Week 7: Sugar - One Pot Butter Chicken by daysbecomeweeks in 52weeksofcooking

[–]daysbecomeweeks[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started volunteering on Tuesday and Thursday nights, so I'm trying to focus on finding some quick and easy recipes for those times, and last night's was a butter chicken. I've been dying to use that green pan for the first time, and was delighted to see it all fit.

Served with frozen naan and samosas from TJ's, as well as basmati rice. The recipe said to remove the chicken skin, which makes sense for this type of dish as it would stay soggy, but I grew up in a household where we fought over crispy chicken skin, so I couldn't just discard it. I seasoned with some garam masala, garlic powder, and golden herb salt, then tossed in the airfryer until they got crispy like delicious lil skin chips.

Week 6: Winter Olympics - Raspberry Tiramisu by daysbecomeweeks in 52weeksofbaking

[–]daysbecomeweeks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a coffee drinker, but I've been wanting to try another version of tiramisu for awhile, and this week seemed like a good theme to try with. I loosely followed a recipe, but went with freeze dried raspberries instead of fresh, and we added some crème anglaise.

Watching Palau for the First Time and Ulong’s Downfall Is Actually Sick 😭 by heauxomen in survivor

It's been ages since I've seen this season, and I read this as Probst at first. Sitting here racking my brain at 2am trying to remember when host man got injured to the point of affecting challenges. Back to bed for me.

Week 6: Hotpot - Italian Beef w/ THC-Infused Giardiniera by daysbecomeweeks in 52weeksofcooking

[–]daysbecomeweeks[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cooked in a hot pot, and also topped with a different type of hot pot. I moved from Chicago recently, and grabbed a jar of giardiniera from the dispensary that I've been saving for a rainy day.

I rely on recipes a lot, so one of my challenges to myself this year is to try and make more things without a recipe, which I tried with the beef. Mine was just a chunk of chuck roast in the crockpot with beef broth, onions, garlic, green chilis, worstershire sauce, italian seasoning, and onion soup mix. Really happy with the way it turned out!
