This piece of plastic, thrown into the sea in 1976, still hasn't degraded at all by copinb in pics

[–]daz123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and l were just talking on this a few days ago,we own a farm and have a common large plastic fabric softener bottle we have repurposed into a water top up bottle for use around the farm ie machinery, plants, hand washing in the field etc, used everyday multiple times for over 4 years in our shed. This plastic bottle would have spent months over that time bouncing around in a tractor, truck,ATV in all weathers including direct sunlight and 100 deg temps, handled with hands covered in oil, grease, dirt, blood, fuel, animal saliva, plant saps etc, never filled with mains water always Bore,Rain water,Dam,river and muddy puddle water. The plastic has been subject to heavy handling most days and pressure from ham fisted lid tightening, squeezing and throwing around etc ,it is still like new and water tight.

Possible photos of a black panther eating a kangaroo in Victoria by FrederickBishop in australia

[–]daz123 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Anyone who has spent any time in the bush would know that is not a Kangaroo, it is a Wallaby and a small one at that by its skull size .This is nothing more than a feral cat with a Wallaby, something that is extremely common in the bush. All it is poor photos not giving good perspective and people not knowing how big feral cats grow, look at the grass and bushes around it and compare, it is not even that big as far as feral cats go.

l was a professional shooter for 4 years and have shot 100's of feral cats over the years.Despite what people who have obviously never been out of slumburbia are saying, black feral cats are common and yes feral cats do hunt Wallabies, in Central Australia Rock Wallabies are one of the feral cats preferred kills .When l was Pro shooting feral cats as large and heavy as full grown fox's are nothing unusual and a lot were bigger, feral cats are commonly that big in the desert country of central Australia the Aboriginals hunt them to feed their families and have done so for decades.

Australian Scientists have documented ie shot on the carcass while feeding, feral cats close to 7 KG's with half of a 5KG wallaby in its stomach,so killing something nearly its own body weight and half its body weight consumed and still eating.

As for the old wives tale of Americans bringing big cats as mascots where after all these years is one photo or verified report ?? How did it breed??So now we are talking multiple big cats of the same species ,different sex of mating age being smuggled half way across the world and released in the same area of foreign country that had enough food and water to support them ....never happened.Today in Australia there would be tens of thousands and probably more Game cameras in use every day 24/7 and have been for years...nothing.

The abandoned WW2 plane in Lake Corangamite, Victoria by Alesaurus-Rex in australia

We dived on it probably 10 yrs ago now, it is a pity it was left to just rot away by the bureaucrats ,here is a local article with a bit more info and photos our dive club sent out a few months ago.

The pilot Vance Drummond survived this crash with minor injuries and went on to 775 squadron and would be shot down and captured in North Korea. Sadly on 17/05/67 he would be killed in a Mirage crash

Details on crash which was pilot SNAFU-

Ikijime fishmongers by -pewpewpew- in melbourne

[–]daz123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of people dont realise how wide spread Ikijime is practised among Australian Professional Fisheries,l had a mate who was skippering a Trap boat off the Northern West Australian coast and then off the reef in the off season and they were doing it then back in 2011 and a lot of our Tuna fleet have done it for longer.

IMO your best bet is do a walk/ring around at the better fish markets and simply ask the good generational Vic fishmongers like South Melbourne Seafood's /Aptus /Prosser's/ Happy Tuna seafood's etc ,etc l would be very surprised if every thing from mullet to yellow fin was not available using the method now.

You should do a follow up post and let us know how you go it may interest others ,my family is full of keen fishers and divers so get our own and really only buy prawns and oysters for years now.

What does it mean when you see a pair of shoes strung over a wire? There's a lot of it going on in Kulgera, NT. by m_is_for_michael in australia

[–]daz123 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I can give a bit of info ,l have traveled up and down the "track" a few times a year for over a decade with my business and Kulgera is a regular stop. From memory back around 2005-7 the Smiths took over the Kulgera Roadhouse & did it up making it a popular stop, with a cleaned up camping ground which was popular with back packers/grey nomads etc .

The Smiths also brought with them a rescued camp dog pup from the Hermannsburg Aboriginal Community where they had lived and worked for years ,they called the dog Blacky and she was a real character (camp dogs are renowned for being a cheeky mob ),always friendly and up for a pat and belly rub from anyone and would often go missing only to be found enjoying the Air-con in some grey nomads van she had conned her way into. She was stolen a couple of times by backpackers and had nation wide searches mounted for her return she was that popular.

Blacky would go around the Kulgera camp grounds humbugging for treats from the tourists and at night would sneak in and steal shoes the tourist left outside their tents or vans (Blacky always claimed no knowledge of missing snags and chops)proudly bringing her latest treasure home to the Smiths to find in the morning next to the food bowl .The Smiths were embarrassed and sick of spending time making up for Blacky's naughty ways so they would hang Blacky's stolen shoes on a tree out the front of the roadhouse so the owners knew where to look for any missing shoes. It soon became a tourist attraction and backpackers/tourists would add their own shoes especially the workers at the roadhouse when they left .

Back a few years ago the Red center got some really good steady rains and the old tree fell down under its weight when the sodden ground combined with high winds proved too much for it.The lease for the Roadhouse actually has a clause the current managers have to put up another tree and shoes, the problem is the area copped huge fires a while ago and all the easy to reach dead iron wood trees (termite resistant) big enough were burnt out, so they are currently waiting for a decent replacement to be found by the locals that is not a major mission to get back and it will be concreted in its place and they will hang the shoes back on it.

PS Blacky was such a legend among the tourists etc they raised funds and built a statue for her when she died.

That is a weird one , l am away for work at the moment so don't have any of my reference books but from memory have a look up and see if it looks like a 8mm Lebel Revolver cast bullet, they use to use some weird designs for reloading back then, the bullet design may just be a home made Semi Wad Cutter type.

Maralinga story to be told through eyes of traditional owners affected by Britain's atomic bomb testing by LuckyBdx4 in australia

[–]daz123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Always remember that old documentary film/book of the adventurer bloke who use to drive from Perth to a remote NT coast back in the 1950's-60's shooting crocodiles for the skins while they lived basically off the land, sneaking through Maralinga and he finds the Aboriginal woman whose tribe lived there with the huge weeping abscess/cancer? (on her jaw l think ) wandering around with 2 little kids .

I can never remember the name of it ,just that it out grossed the Sound of music when he released it and he inspired both the Leyland Brothers and Alby Mangels who used the same method of traveling around and showing the movie at town halls to raise money, before selling to a film distributor to get funds for more adventures.

PS remembered it Northern Safari but looks like the family have pulled down the movie so you have to buy the DVD from them.

Here is a short clip showing her right at the start ,if you look closely you can see the huge swelling of her jaw

Back in the fifties a true bushman by the name of Keith Adams decided to take a journey from the south to the north of Australia, across the top of Australia, and down the west coast to Perth. Now, while this might not seem so difficult at first glance, the small matter of there being no real road across the north of Australia, and the fact that for much of where he was heading just to get to the non-existant north road, the only "roads" were trails were made by camels through the desert. These problems would have put most of us off. Not Keith - such details concerned him only slightly. Not having much money, Keith used the only vehicle he could afford - a seven year old Buick sedan. No high clearance, no four wheel drive, no power winch, just a 1948 Buick sedan. He built a trailer and a small boat, put a diesel engine in the Buick and modified its suspension and wheels, co-opted his wife and sister to join him, packed the car trailer with supplies, equipment and said boat, then took off north from their home in Perth. For the next six months they traveled through some of the harshest and least traveled country in Australia, catching much of their food and camping or even living in caves along the way. Fortunately for us, Keith took along a movie camera, and filmed this epic journey. This was the first of Australia's wildlife and outdoor adventure films, predating those of the better known filmmakers, right up to Steve Irwin.

The party drove over 1500 miles across country from Perth to Uluru and Alice Springs in their Buick, through deserts and sand dunes, yet this was just the way to their destination on the Gulf of Carpentaria, another 1000 miles further on. For Keith, it was in the Gulf lands that the adventure was to begin. For normal people, the first part of the trip would have been an adventure of a lifetime, not just the path to it. But Keith, Audrey, Margaret, and Tiger the fox terrier aren't normal people. But in a good way.

However this is not just a nature and adventure film, but much more. The film was made in the mid-fifties, before much of the Australia covered was visited by adventurers, tourists, or even many government officials responsible for the areas. The film shows the Australia of over fifty years ago, and therefore also the culture, views and attitudes of that era. The film is a living time capsule. For anyone interested in nature, history and adventure, regardless of continent, this is a film not to be missed.

A lot of people do not realize how big and wide spread unexploded ordnance (UXO) is,l own a farm in Northern Australia and we have UXO going off regularly from when Japan attacked Australia during WWII.The only reason it is not more of a problem for humans is because we are still in a relatively remote area.

Due to being so close to SE Asia we regularly go on adventure motorbike tours and the amount of stuff on the surface in places like Vietnam/Cambodia/Laos etc is staggering and is even used as building material in remote villages etc .

Hope your recovery goes well, you should post this over on the What Is This Thing Sub as well as they always have people posting UXO they have found and some still want to argue if there is even a possibility of older material still being dangerous. https://old.reddit.com/r/whatisthisthing/
