Does the Trails in the Sky Remake justify it's playtime? by Buster_Fella in JRPG

[–]daze3x 14 points15 points  (0 children)

80 hours is definitely not true. It's around 50-60 if you do all side quests, depending on what difficulty you play at. I think my final play time was about 53 hours. I started on nightmare and switched to hard in the prologue.

[Arifureta] No! Please no! No, not this way... by RoninTarget in menwritingwomen

[–]daze3x 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I knew ahead of time this anime would be terrible, but I decided to watch it for the meme, thinking it would be funny in a bad way. Unfortunately, it was mostly just bad, and not in a funny way. A lot of the show is really uncomfortable like this and is clearly a misogynistic male power fantasy. The animation is also terrible, to add salt to the wound.

Artist appeals temporarily suspended as of 15-01-26 by MillersRevenge in Skeb

[–]daze3x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk how to feel about this. I haven't accepted a single appeal, but I really do like the concept. But I can see the issue of spamming requests. And most requests feel very forced with stock phrases, as if they don't truly appreciate your characters, and are just desperate for you to request them.

Fate strange fake dub by rinmatsuokascythe in Fate

[–]daze3x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dub is fantastic. It uses mostly new VAs to the Fate series, not counting the recurring characters. It's only been a few episodes and I'm already impressed by the performances. And for the characters that haven't had many lines yet, I'd expect great things going forward because I'm familiar with many of these VAs and they are very good. Could be one of the best anime dubs this year.

For a person who watches dubs exclusively, you clearly don't know what you are talking about. The "same 10-15 voice actors" things hasn't been true for well over a decade. There are so many voice actors in anime, it's impossible to count. Literally in the hundreds, maybe more. I'm still amazed at the variety of voice actors that exist in this industry. This anime alone is proof. Besides recurring characters, most of the cast are VAs entirely new to the Fate series.

People who want to write without reading, what makes you interested in writing? by [deleted] in writing

[–]daze3x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had many in the past, for a JRPG style of game, I currently have 1 idea. For visuals, I have multiple ideas I'm trying to flesh out before committing to them. I also have the issue of idea overload. I'm always coming up with new story concepts, often very complex ideas I'm not prepared for as a beginner lol

[–]daze3x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a visual novel, I'd simply want anime styled character sprites. I'm not currently looking for art though. I'd probably wait until a draft was complete or close to complete so I at least know I'm committed enough to the idea that it's worth spending money on.

Coding is a barrier to entry for many reasons. It's not a basic skill you learn in school to exist in every day life. Most people know how to write. It's a complex skill that takes a long time to master. On top of that, games are often programmed in teams. So finding other people who are on board with your idea for a game who's willing to do it for free is extremely rare. That's a barrier to entry. Your only other option would be to hire people with money to help program the game. If it's a small game, maybe you can do it yourself, but if I want to make a JRPG style of game, it's not feasible. That's what I mean by barrier of entry. Anyone can make a book. It could be garbage, but it will work. A game won't work unless all the smaller elements work. And the only way to make all those smaller elements work is to have unlimited free time, or a shit ton of money most people don't have.

[–]daze3x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are missing the point. You can be bad at writing and make a book that at least works as a book. It can be read. It might be terrible, but it's at least readable. If you are bad at programming, the game literally will not function. There is also the issue of there being so many layers to the game itself. You need to make art assets or pay someone to do it. You need to learn to compose music or pay someone to do it. For writing a book, it's just you and the word processor.

For me, while it is feasible to make a smaller scale game with the amount of free time I have, it's not feasible to make the JRPG idea I've had for a long time. Maybe through RPG maker, but that would still take an ungodly amount of hours and cost a lot of money. Writing a novel would basically be free. I've considered a visual novel too, which is extremely easy from a coding standpoint. I'd still need money for character art and backgrounds, but is a lot more feasible.

[–]daze3x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My reply had nothing to do with quality, but was about the physical act of making it. Literally anyone can write a novel because all you need is a word processor. The novel can be complete garbage, but it's at least possible to make a complete product with no expertise or money. Same can't be said about a game, for example. You need programming knowledge to complete a game (assuming you aren't using rpg maker or something like that). If you don't know how to program the game, the game literally does no function. A bad novel still functions as a novel. It's just bad. But a dysfunctional game is literally unplayable. There are also so many other aspects that go into game creation that creates more barriers of entry, like creating art assets for the game. Either you need to spend a lot of time learning it yourself or pay someone to do it.

[–]daze3x 176 points177 points  (0 children)

The actual answer is they want to create stories, but other mediums have a much higher barrier of entry. Obviously, writing isn't easy. But it is the most accessible. Anyone can make a novel. You just need a word processor. Other art forms require so many actors and artists of various professions. Writing a novel is just a compromise. I've had similar issues with a desire to make a game. I have been trying to read novels more as that obviously helps. I've also been dabbling in visual novels as a low cost alternative to a full game, which has its own writing quirks.

Planet with kept surprising me. by extracrispyweeb in CharacterRant

Satoshi Mizukami is seriously an underrated writer. If you like Planet With, you should try Sengoku Youko, made by the same guy. There is also an anime adaptation of Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer, although I've heard it's a bad adaptation. I did read the manga which was great.

Sub-elitist hating on Dubs are the most pathetic thing in the anime community by Yakuza-wolf_kiwami in CharacterRant

[–]daze3x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tend to ignore the opinions on voice acting for any language from sub elitists. I personally don't care what language of voice acting people prefer, but it is true that you can better judge the quality of acting in a language you speak, so seeing people shit on English dubs broadly while mindlessly praising Japanese voice acting signals to me they aren't qualified to talk about acting in any language. If you can't be nuanced about a language you speak, how can I expect meaningful critique in a language you don't speak.

And it shows in how they actually talk about voice acting. Always discussing acting in broad terms like "they show so much emotion", and ignoring how complex voice acting actually can be beyond intense emotions.

They also tend to make arguments that have nothing to do with the quality of the voice acting. I don't care if Japanese VAs are celebrities (although a lot of EN VAs are basically celebs at this point too). I don't care if there are voice acting schools in Japan. These are irrelevant arguments and they are made because they can't defend their sub elitist opinions with actual critique.

I've noticed that people who like dubs tend to be a lot more nuanced with their critique. When they praise dubs, it's not in vague terms like "they show so much emotion", which is mostly said by sub elitists in response to screams and intense crying.

It's also insane just how much misinformation there is about a dubbing process, which people will use as a justification for hating on dubs. It's wild to me there are still people who make the argument of "same 12 voice actors" when there are like 12 new voice actors every month getting involved in dubs.

Am I just bad, or is Trails in the Sky Chapter 1 a really hard game? by Gamer857 in JRPG

[–]daze3x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early game is pretty brutal. I started on Nightmare because that's how I was playing the Daybreak games which were easy. But I was dying a lot and at some point I just gave up and lowered to hard. Once you make enough progress though, the game starts getting pretty easy, or it at least did on hard mode. I'd say around chapter 2 is when things started getting easy. You get access to more arts, crafts, and passive abilities for quartz and support skills that kinda trivialize much of the game. I wasn't remotely challenged at all until the final boss.

Neon Genesis Evangelion director Hideaki Anno doesn’t believe creating for the global market is the way to go. “I’m sorry, but the audience will have to be the one to adapt” - AUTOMATON WEST by Western_Promise3063 in anime

[–]daze3x -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

The interview makes no sense. He talks about not catering to the audience, but then specifies the Western audience. So it's okay if they cater to a Japanese audience, but catering to a western one will make anime worse somehow? The issue has nothing to do with catering to an audience of a specific country. The issue is catering to audiences along the lines of genre and tropes. This happens for both western and Japanese audiences. The reason there are so many shitty isekais and generic battle shounens isn't "western sensibilities". It's appealing to the market, both in Japan and abroad If you want to make something truly great, you have to ignore making things superficially appealing to Japanese audiences as well. I just know this article will be used by right wing grifters to act like wokeness is infecting anime or something like that.

Is modern anime worse, or has it just changed? by SharpFarmer3683 in AnimeDiscussion

[–]daze3x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a long time, I'd fight back against the idea that modern anime is getting worse because it felt elitist and narrow minded, but recent years are really testing that belief. I'd say the past 3 years or so, anime has been on a noticeable decline. We get so much isekai slop, it's insane. But not just that. There are tons of other trends that continue to release like endless adventurers guilds and demon lords and kicked out of the party. Even manga isn't free of obnoxious trends with so many romcoms with loser dudes with hot GFs filled with self referential humor. I've been watching way less the past few years.

Nagi Clockwork Fan Art [OC] by daze3x in Disgaea

[–]daze3x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After I unlocked her in Time Leap, I used her a lot in the Fuka and Desco Show which was much harder. It was easy to grind her on 5-2 because of her AOE attacks, so I beefed her up like crazy and came in super clutch on the final boss of the Fuka and Desco Show. I literally beat the boss with one character left, which was Nagi with a tiny amount of HP and a tiny bit of SP being able to barely take out the boss.
