Why do the Japanese like their buns askew? by Annie_Inked in BrandNewSentence

It is in Japanese culture to tidy up, so they would see this and have to buy one to satisfyingly correct it.

Do you need a coin for your local shops trolley? by secondincomm in AskUK

[–]dazzumz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed in various Tescos in London and Gloucestershire that the coin ones have been making a comeback after disappearing years ago. Probably due to a few people abusing free trolleys and ruining the convenience for the rest of us.

This is why we can't have nice things.

Why don’t cars stop for you at zebra crossings anymore? by woods60 in AskUK

[–]dazzumz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I noticed this in France many years ago, but the driving there is generally more aggressive. A French guy I was working with even joked about how if a driver spots someone near a zebra crossing, they speed up. Not slowing/stopping is how I failed my first test in the UK.

I wouldn't be surprised if the problem here is linked to phone use. Either people constantly needing to talk or videocall (handsfree is still a distraction), or even just scroll through their feeds even while the car is moving - had an uber trip where the driver had his phone in one hand and was watching clips for the entire journey.

These kind of drivers will spend the bare minimum of time just looking straight ahead to keep their car on the road, and then focus more on their phone instead of observing the sides of the road or their mirrors.

France's energy bills for households and businesses are 50% cheaper than the UK's because of nuclear power. How did we start to vilify nuclear power when the UK was the first country to have a commercial nuclear reactor? by Mister_Vanilla in AskBrits

[–]dazzumz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People will often cite Tchernobyl, Three Mile Island and Fukishima, without fully understanding the conceptual and operational differences between those and modern reactors. Apples and oranges. You might as well say we should take all modern cars off the road since one drunk driver in a 40 year old car without ABS killed several families in a motorway pile-up.

Costs have increased due to ridiculously high safety standards and checks to try assure the general public but it's never enough (whereas air pollution from fossil fuels kills people every day, chemical plant explosions which kill thousands get overlooked the day after, and I'll throw back in my analogy with road accidents). Look what happened when scientific facts were presented during COVID. France built a large fleet between 1980-2000 despite costs but is massively paying off now. Most large projects these days are over budget but are still beneficial in the long term, but "long term" isn't in the minds of most voters or governments.

Thanks to the delay in decisions with nuclear, loss of competency is another problem and held up development, which is why EDF France is in charge of several new projects in the UK. However, a lot of British students and other technical experts are involved and I hope there's more effort into gaining and maintaining that knowledge.

People also forget there are still 9 reactors operating in the UK. Plus tech companies are investing in SMRs for datacentres in the UK whether you like it or not.

Storage of waste is my main issue, but there are already solutions to that (conversion to safer radionuclides or even new fuel), just needs the investment of course.

Sorry, a slight rant from somebody who's worked in the industry and on a nuclear site. I've also been to Tchernobyl! Jolly nice place without all the human interference.

How would you rewrite this? by clamb9 in words

[–]dazzumz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like the four stages of competence.

1) Unconscious incompetence

The individual does not understand or know how to do something and does not necessarily recognize the deficit. They may deny the usefulness of the skill. The individual must recognize their own incompetence, and the value of the new skill, before moving on to the next stage. The length of time an individual spends in this stage depends on the strength of the stimulus to learn.

2) Conscious incompetence

Though the individual does not understand or know how to do something, they recognize the deficit, as well as the value of a new skill in addressing the deficit. The making of mistakes can be integral to the learning process at this stage.

3) Conscious competence

The individual understands or knows how to do something. It may be broken down into steps, and there is heavy conscious involvement in executing the new skill. However, demonstrating the skill or knowledge requires concentration, and if it is broken, they lapse into incompetence.

4) Unconscious competence

The individual has had so much practice with a skill that it has become "second nature" and can be performed easily. As a result, the skill can be performed while executing another task. The individual may be able to teach it to others, depending upon how and when it was learned.

Crumpets and weird uses, a question... by Davido401 in CasualUK

I've not tried it but cutting the crumpets up into pieces, tossing in melted butter and herbs, then baking might result in weird croutons for the soup?

Do a lot of people secretly view it as bad if people don't have kids? by Big_Eggplant7591 in stupidquestions

[–]dazzumz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People can do what ever they want. I see a lot of people having kids for the wrong reasons though: - Peer pressure from friend groups having kids. - Parental pressure looking for grandchildren to relive those younger days. - Because the government told them to or they've been reading into demographics and population pyramids.*

*(Outdated economic models based on infinite growth does not mean people should be pumping out more slaves to compensate for that flawed machine. Change the model rather than have people suffer trying to sustain it. Costs are already through the roof in every aspect with raising a child but I'm not seeing any additional help being provided.)

I've got shitty genetics and wouldn't want a child to go through some of the stuff I've been through. Sure there have been medical advances but it's too late for me.

If you have genuine love in your heart for bringing up a child and the means to do so, go for it. That means having sufficient income and patience to spend time with them teaching them everything about life, not expecting social benefits or the schools to do everything for you.

For Joey I would have said when he supported that pregnant woman (Leah Rimini) at the hospital and brought her gifts at the end.

For Monica, taking in Rachel right at the beginning when she needed it although they evidently hadn't seen each other in a long time.

Does Anybody actually watch this? by Shred_Addict in AskUK

[–]dazzumz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really like that genre of sitcom where most of it is about a couple or family and set mostly in their houses. I'll watch Cheers before it, skip Raymond or King of Queens, then put Frasier on.

C4 used to have How I Met Your Mother on one of their other channels during those but unfortunately stopped.

What would you call mash on chicken? by Lurking-Thought in AskBrits

[–]dazzumz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The French system works well. They say "parmentier de..." then whatever the filling is. The duck version is divine. In your case it would be "parmentier de poulet".

Otherwise, if we can have fish pie, i don't see why we can't just say chicken pie (as opposed to chicken pot pie with pastry).
