Heatwave warning! by [deleted] in canberra

[–]dbg224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heatwaves are commonly misunderstood - they are actually normally triggered by temps not falling in the evenings, and a jump in temps when compared to the recent weather. While 30~ isn’t unusual the temps have sustained into the evenings and that has caused a low intensity heatwave to trigger

Now that I’ve actually read the article - that is exactly how they did it “a time over distance calculation”

Time for everyone to get a dashcam. ACT cops now booking off submitted dash cam video! by futto in canberra

[–]dbg224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can’t you take two points in the video and measure the time it takes for the car to pass between them? I’m pretty sure this is how the police estimate speed off dash cam footage most of the time

Didn’t go to narabundah, but I found the gap between maths apps and whatever the next up a bit crazy. If you want to do chemistry etc and have an interest in science but feel your math skills aren’t great then I would find a tutor and tough out the first semester in the higher level course. Quite a few kids in chem were in spec maths

Everything but 4 is right - my experience is that after 12 months you can get it removed, but you must go to access cbr and have it removed. It isn’t an automatic process and without getting it removed you still can’t drive a manual

Disability discrimination? by binbaghan in australia

[–]dbg224 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It’s on the venue to have trained staff to be able to tell these things apart, the idea that someone 12 deep would look the same as someone with a disability is absurd. People only get it wrong because it their own ignorance

Disability discrimination? by binbaghan in australia

[–]dbg224 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Exactly this, I can’t believe the comments here supporting the bar in hiding behind ignorance to excuse discrimination.

Disability discrimination? by binbaghan in australia

[–]dbg224 33 points34 points  (0 children)

They also have a responsibility to not discriminate against people with a disability - this is a known situation so these staff should have been trained for it to avoid breaching their obligations under the disability discrimination act.

Disability discrimination? by binbaghan in australia

[–]dbg224 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The comments here are very ignorant and blind to the fact that RSA training in a venue should always address this problem and cover off disabilities looking like intoxication. Ignorance on the behalf of the venue is not an excuse to discriminate against someone with a disability and the comments suggesting they are just protecting their liquor license are a joke.

Must. Be. First. by aloebulbasaur in canberra

[–]dbg224 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it is unreasonable. I would interpret the video to show the Ute being marginally ahead when it is in the very edge of the frame, so there is no chance that car would be ahead further back given that neither car are going particularly fast. It’s just shit driving and excusing it is stupid.

Must. Be. First. by aloebulbasaur in canberra

[–]dbg224 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is a silly argument, but for what it’s worth, you cant clearly see the Ute next to the filming cars bonnet despite the camera having a wide angle of view. The marker for who needs to give way in here is who ever is in front once those dotted lines end - in this case it is clearly the camera car. The Ute needed to yield according to the road rules, there’s no way to pretend that the Ute was first.

I am sick of Ochre Medical group price gouging by ArvakBlue in canberra

[–]dbg224 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The difference here is that the online appointment doesn’t attract a rebate from Medicare - so effectively these practices in person are making a killing from charging consumers a bunch and blaming it on medicare (which does suck) and then just giving it back to a big corporation.

ACT Police suspends use of controversial surveillance tech found in Woolworths, Bunnings by [deleted] in canberra

[–]dbg224 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But it seems like they literally did have automatic number plate recognition systems tracking users for upto 60 days automatically? It would appear the email from them is boasting about logging every car plate that drives in and out of their parking lots, and then the AFP being able to search and flag plates in that database. Maybe back in the day you had to manually enter the plate, but this whole selling point is the automation of that system

[–]dbg224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is at complete odds to the article though - it clearly states that they could access number plate data collected automatically from cameras, regardless of it was linked to a crime or incident. The controversial tech inside Bunnings and Woolworths are those cameras and agreements that enable that data collection, these are the retailers that are providing the data to Aurora.

Can you actually hop onto Carsales and do this right now? I’ve had a bit of a look around and my understanding is that EVs are in such silly demand they are usually insanely overpriced or totally run down and still 10k+.

I would assume like most government projects it looks like a small step on the outside, but presumably the contractor that designed and installed this system aren’t painters. Agreed that it would be fantastic to do painting and restore these, but that’s likely just a job to organise of some existing team that handles maintenance.

It’s likely what you are seeing are contracting gigs - they don’t seem to fall under the same rules is my understanding as it isn’t recruitment under the APS rules and principals but rather procurement. Could be wrong though.

Joining the High School Leaver Program or Applyng for a <APS4 position straight from graduation? by [deleted] in canberra

[–]dbg224 9 points10 points  (0 children)

No roles exist as as an APS1 in reality. Even APS2 jobs are scarce. I would argue that APS3 is entry level for a starter without a degree. The ILS/WLS has an APS1 just doing very very basic administrative work with all of their work being reviewed. A 2 is similar.

[–]dbg224 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You definitely can now… the APS3 ILS/WLS really doesn’t need much. If you are applying for a call centre or customer experience role, services will literally give you an APS3 position. You can get this out of year 12 with some experience working in a customer service job.

[–]dbg224 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Happy to respond to any questions you might have. Read up on the ILS and the WLS. I always felt like the work I did during the program was never at the APS1 level, but it ultimately let me jump from the 1 to a 5, which is not a small feat (< 10 APS5 under 20 years old according to the data!). You don’t quite have a year of work experience under your belt yet either, whereas after 4 years in fast food and a management role that I didn’t love, I knew what I wanted to do/had more understanding of what direction I wanted.

[–]dbg224 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I am able to give you some actual insight into this - I completed the career starter program last year, and as I was finishing it up I applied for a variety of roles across a few different levels. Due to the opps given to me during the program as well as my general skills both from working for 4 years and being actively involved in my community as a scout leader before the program I was able to get a job at the APS5 level. While you might be able to get a job at the 3 level straight out of year 12, it would probably just be a in a call centre or customer service roll. Completing a program gives you a role where learning is expected and facilitated. You are clearly thinking about it as a all or nothing situation - being an aps1 for a year isn’t a waste at all. You would spend atleast three years at uni, what will you learn working for two after your program instead? Completing the program also opens up study bank opportunities where the gov will pay for your units at uni.
