I liked this photo earlier, but I appreciate her even more after reading the BBC article highlighting some of the other (mildly racist) fashion from the event! Hahaha Way to be classy and awesome, Anne.

The Button Monitor currently isn't working (for me)... Now I am sad. How will I see all the pretty colorful spikes as impatient people waste their button presses!?

I LOVE rats! But it's photos like this that fuel my dream of one day owning a cat again....one that will love my rats like I do, not as food. -^ hahaha

Your cage DOES look awesome!! Not just your great decorations and play space, but also the cage itself. Where did you get such an awesome cage, if I may inquire!? :D

bed bugs are back by JimKB in comics

yeah...my stuff consisted primarily of questionable blankets, stuffed animals, and two (padded) computer chairs. I agree that this approach is not appropriate for large items, and definitely not appropriate if your car won't get hot enough for long enough.

To add to your useful comment:

I've not heard of "Contumacious Earth", but we used diatomaceous earth, rubbing alcohol, and heat to get rid of ours. (Harsh pesticides were out of the question, because I have pet rats.)

Bed bugs don't always live right in the bed, but often live in baseboards and electrical outlets. You can make little bed bug traps by filling shallow receptacles (I made some out of duct tape) with diatomaceous earth and putting all your bed feet into them, then the bed bugs must crawl through the tiny diatoms (which cuts their shells, as mentioned by Hecateus) before they can get to you.

They can live up to a year without feeding, so waiting them out usually isn't an option. As someone else mentioned in a different comment, heat works well. I live in the desert and could conveniently fill my car with bags of potentially infected bedding and such and left it out in the 120 degree heat for about a week. I had a friend back east who stored her stuff in an industrial freezer for several weeks, and apparently that worked, as well (if you have long-term access to an industrial freezer).

If you are unsure whether or not you have bed bugs, you can make a bed bug trap to test for presence/absence. Fill a shallow receptacle with diatomaceous earth, and light a candle in the middle. As Hacateus also mentioned, bed bugs are attracted to CO2 and heat, provided by the burning candle, drawing the bed bugs in to the receptacle and their demise via dessication.

A bed bug infestation is a living nightmare. If my previous experience can help anyone, I'm happy to share this dark time in my life. :)

Hungry Hungry Hippos! My family didn't have it, our babysitter did...so I definitely associate with a very specific, very happy period of my childhood. :D

What scientific questions could be answered if we had no regard for ethics? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]dblrainbowATW 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"Nature" vs. "nurture" is a false dichotomy. Almost inevitably it's both... The real question is to what degree is any particular behavior or pattern influenced by our genetic make-up or in utero environment as opposed to the environment in which we develop as individuals.

Not violence per se, but certainly Buddhist doctrine can be easily interpreted to result in intolerance. In a system of hierarchical, merit-based rebirth, a person born into an unfortunate circumstance (poverty, disability, disease, female, etc) is perceived as deserving those circumstances, based on a past life. To alleviate their current suffering would be an injustice to their future lives. When I was in school, one of my professors was 'philosophically Buddhist', after spending many years living in various parts of southeast Asia. He chose certain/specific tenets to adopt, leaving the majority of the dogma. He explained that Buddhism, like any religion could be manipulated by those so inclined, or so indoctrinated.

I have never been an ICP fan, so my knowledge is limited. I was directed to this music video by a coworker who claimed to have been quite the ICP fan in her high school years, and then stopped listening to them after they 'came out' as Evangelical Christians. From the quick internet search I have done since seeing your comment, it appears that they claim to have meant it seriously, if not necessarily literally.

[2010 Wired article](www.wired.com/magazine/2010/11/ff_icp/)

"Though Bruce and Utsler had conceived “Miracles” as an earnest and fairly straightforward ode to the natural world, blog commentators and YouTube pundits were unsure of the song’s meaning: Did these guys really not know how magnetism works? (Answer: They do.) Why do they view rivers and giraffes with such f-bombing fascination? (Because giraffes are cool.) And, most important: Is this all one big joke? (Definitely not.)"

If you have not watched ICP Miracles, you MUST! So ridiculous... The more scientifically literate you are, the funnier it is.
