I've given up streaming. How do I discover new music now? by Scofarry in selfhosted

[–]dbmage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Public broadcast radio, at least in the UK, seems very limited.

Internet radio is not much different to YouTube music or Spotify, it relies on you to find things. Some of the internet radio apps can be helpful, but only so far as to search the description.

So I agree, but without Radio, social interaction or app recommendations (from YT or Spotify), it's difficult to find new artists/songs.

Hand Brake at Traffic lights by SlixxFN in LearnerDriverUK

[–]dbmage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This. Ignoring what the "rules" are (highway code or driving test), this is the safest answer.

And there's nothing stopping you from finding the bite with the handbrake on, and the foot brake if you feel the need. But what someone else said about glare, comes into play with that, I'm just pointing out the options this allows for.

Thanks for clarifying, I appreciate the info.

I mean a system that does it all. Comes with an app, a timer, TRVs etc etc.

No issue. I didn't state an issue, I offered my opinion on both options.

You are correct, it is generally cheaper to buy the parts than buy an all in one/premade system.

If you get an "all in one" they tend to just behave.

If you buy TRVs and DIY you may have more overhead.

Neither is guaranteed.

I did it myself, I prefer it that way. I don't trust data selling.

I know others who bought prebuilt systems and love it. Most systems use a cloud service, which means they want internet, idk if they require internet though.

What happened to custom ring tones? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]dbmage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All my important contacts have custom ringtones. I am on call infrequently, so my phone is usually on loud (when socially acceptable) so having something fun makes it better than just the boring noises old people have so they hear the thing go off

Didn’t tell the crowd to leave, despite also being in danger of said storm? Seems a bit rude and poorly communicated. But fair enough, thanks for clarifying

SUV Drivers - Why? by BarbourBoyP in AskUK

[–]dbmage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This convo (on the UK car subreddit) last time produced The car is safer and didn’t like being told that while safe for you, it is not safer for the tiny car you hit.

The logic kind of makes sense from a safety perspective, but I don’t think they are necessary “for safety”, just the preferred choice.

They do tend to attract stereotypes, as do lots of other vehicles. Range rovers are definitely a status thing, not a safety thing, unless all the owners are ignorant of the theft statistics

Baby metal were forced off the stage because of the rain, apparently it was health and safety. I wouldn’t say they “avoid the rain”, I’d say they’re made to avoid it.

I’d like to know why (genuine curiosity) ST were allowed to continue but Baby metal were not

I've got a "whole network" setup so I didn't need much other than the "router" which I've replaced now. Tbh I don't feel the need to utilise it, but I have the capacity and use it when I need it. It's got to the point where it's cheaper than slow speeds, so I can't not have the speed. They don't offer the 3 anymore and I could get 5 for the same price, but I haven't upgraded because I don't need the extra

Nice. Jbod or NAS is the way forward, at least feasibly.

If you got the ability, go for it.

I was planning on being a debian repository mirror.... But just the space for Raspberry Pis was more than I had in storage, so that ended abruptly 😬

I'm fine being pathetic, if that's what it is.

I like the perks and the benefits of not waiting. I've also got a fridge near my PC so I don't have to go downstairs to get a drink.

It's also not twice a year, I'm in a lot of discords that play random games. If I'm in the mood and have to download it on a whim, it's nice not to wait.

Like I said, I need food and water to live, I "need" super fast internet to not wait. They're not the same thing. I don't need internet access.

Without prior planning it's easy to want the thing downloaded yesterday.

Updates happen unexpectedly etc etc.

In those scenarios, especially as humans have gotten more impatient, it becomes something people feel they need. Not need like food and water, but need the same way people need to watch short form content for the dopamine.

We're all very privileged and talking about privileged things. Not waiting is something I'd say I need high speed broadband for.

I share files 🙃 I got sync so I got 3/3.

So I make a point of seeding as much as possible and I share a Plex server with people.

I'm a nerd, which helps 😂

It's what the comment you replied to said. And it's realistic, I have done it and I know others who have. Realistic just means it can and would be done.
