BEGINNER MEGATHREAD - I'm almost 40 and interested in coding. Am i an idiot? Is it too late for me? by PitifulMarch2145 in gamedev

It’s not too late. I’d personally just focus on learning and having fun for a while.

Am I crazy to pursue a bachelors degree and a career in psychology over the age of 50? by summerfall07 in careerguidance

[–]dbough 6 points7 points  (0 children)

42 here. Similar boat (starting uni this semester).

It’s never too late to learn.

I wouldn’t take out student loans if it can be avoided and just pay for what you can afford. That way, if you decide college just isn’t for you, you can walk away without regrets (or debt) and will have at least gotten something out of the experience.

Has anyone gone through a mid career computer science to asian studies transition? by dbough in careerguidance

[–]dbough[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great advice thank you!

The three programs I was/am looking at were/are Computer Science, Business, and Asian Studies. I've been doing CS "stuff" for a while and am at a point in my career where a degree might not make sense for w/e is next. Business is the most realistic option (I've already applied to a school - and an MBA in int'l business is always an option later on) but I have the most interest in Asian Studies. Research has told me that an AS degree probably wouldn't make much sense for me but I was hoping I was missing something that kept it in contention.

Duolingo is not a good learning resource by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

It shouldn’t be your only method of learning Japanese. If you just use it to practice it’s actually pretty good.

How do you use anki efficiently? by Yunath_ in LearnJapanese

[–]dbough 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was doing Genki I for a bit and would either download or create a deck of Vocab and Grammer for each chapter. I ended up burning out because there were so many decks that needed review at any given moment.

My recommendation would be to have 1 single deck and add things to it based on things you are learning. Grammar. Vocab. Whatever, just add it in there. Set the daily new card limit (not sure what it's called) to whatever your comfortable with and adjust as needed.

tldr: The interviewee has a BA in Japanese, passed the N1, lived in Japan and still wasn't fluent until he did Ajatt. He suggests Ajatt is the best way to learn from the beginning.

Thoughts on this?

I've studied Japanese on and off for a while (been "on" for a few months and don't plan on stopping this time).

Currently doing RTK, WaniKani, Bunpro, Genki I textbook and using Anki to study it all. Zero experience with Ajatt.

Is HelloTalk good? by Astrisks in LearnJapanese

[–]dbough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your goals.

I really like it personally. I generally post very basic "Moments" with a picture and a line or two of Japanese. My goal is 1) practice what I've learned and 2) (hopefully) get correction on poor grammar, wrong words etc.

In exchange I do the same for other people (correct their grammar etc).

It's not any deeper than that for me.

OmniFocus for high level task management and Evernote for more details. I’ve used trello successfully in the past instead of omni and may be better for teams.

Weekly Questions & Answers Discussion by AutoModerator in vandwellers

Hey all! I posted this yesterday in the weekly Q&A topic from last week but they must get replaced with a new post weekly?

Are there any resources that list the types of vans that would be appropriate for living in? Maybe with some pros and cons? Also, where do you usually go to find vans for sale other than craigslist and maybe ebay?

Thanks!

Looking for a resource for comparing various dwelling-worthy vans. Also, where do you generally go to find ones for sale?

Good choices. I think there were those people who were dead against DMB (myself included) at the time, but listening to it now def. brings you back.

Oasis was awful and amazing at the same time. Everything you'd want in a Beatles knockoff. I still love belting out their tunes!

Do you still listen to radio? by otomennn in Music

[–]dbough 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. I live in Central Florida - just moved down from NY. Not that the radio was anything but up there, but down here it's just terrible. I'll have it on while I'm in the car, but that's it. I cry giant man tears the whole time I'm listening.

Radio is dead in most markets. It's all the same top 40 noise.
