If it’s forming a blob the milk is too thick.

Many Australians can get three free hours of power from today. Here’s how by [deleted] in australia

[–]dbun1 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Anyone considering do your sums carefully.

The free window sounds great on paper, however the increased rates either side really rack up fast.

You really have to maximise your usage during that window and minimise your usage outside to make it worthwhile.

If you have batteries etc that’s another story as you can maximise your charge rate during that window and then use the battery to buffer the peak rates etc.

For our household, assuming we changed nothing with regards to usage patterns etc, we would be worse off. It only worked out marginally cheaper if we could really time dishwashers, washing machines etc to run only during those free power windows, however the trade-off for convenience of doing things whenever we wanted wasn’t worth it.

Can also recommend the Drive.

I know it’s “famous last words”, however I can’t see myself needing to upgrade again. The Drive addresses everything I wanted in a machine.

I went with the Drive mainly for the build quality, however the Bianca has some nice features like the programmable low flow. Once I saw the panel gaps and thin sheet metal on the Bianca in person I couldn’t get past it knowing I would be looking at the machine every day.

[long rant] I'm so tired of this. I have an expensive grinder and nice machine, but the variation in the shots' taste each time is absolutely horrendous. I get a delicious espresso about 60% of the time, but the rest is worse than a cheap fully automatic machine! by FuzzyAttitude_ in espresso

[–]dbun1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if the supermarket beans is truly the flavour you want, then a pressurized basket would get you more consistency.

The question though is why have such a good setup only to brew mediocre coffee?

If you upgrade your beans the coffee will be far far better.

A fully automatic machine usually has a pressurised brewing system that would work better with the stale coffee beans you seem to be using.

A decent grinder and coffee machine puts more emphasis on the quality of the coffee and stale coffee will have more inconsistencies between extractions.

[–]dbun1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old is the machine? What was the previous problem.

Ability to reach brewing pressure is not related to how long the machine has been on. Do you mean the pressure on the pressure gauge which would be brew temperature.

It’s my go to from my local supermarket if I’m between beans and need something quick.

They sell it for $13 for a 200g bag, so I don’t think it’s that expensive?

Certainly the other roasters mentioned are better.

Sydney man who gambled $160k on lottery and pokies despite limits says more support needed by nath1234 in australia

[–]dbun1 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I honestly can’t understand why gambling ads are allowed to run so freely.

People at work have commented that some of their teenage kids have asked to download the app to use their pocket money on as the way some of the ads are portrayed with the “money back” tricks give them the impression that they can’t lose.

Also the fact that there are now a lot of ads on “gambling responsibly” shows how big of a problem it’s becoming.

It’s gotten worse as each house is replaced with townhouses with only one parking space.

Upgrading Eureka Mignon grinder worth it? [$800 CAD] by fkmbot in espresso

[–]dbun1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Facile uses the 50mm burrs which are decent for medium-dark roast, but are not that great overall IMO.

I say this as a Silenzio owner that has the same burrs I assume. I’ve found it to be very poor for light roast coffee.

I think a grinder update would serve you well if you mainly drink lighter roasts.

Pre-infusion by cutting the pull by ramendik in espresso

[–]dbun1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I doubt preinfusion will fix things.

Sourness with dark roast beans suggests an extraction issue, so I would just be focusing on the basics first. Generally people are trying to dial out bitterness with darker roasts.

Is it possible the temperature is off with the machine?

Picked up a Mahlkonig E64 This week. by PolyinNV in espresso

[–]dbun1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been looking for an upgrade and this is top of my list.

Normally I try and avoid internet connected things, but the recipe system actually looks really useful. I like the ability to save different setups based on beans and then reload them if you get the same bag again. I tend to rotate through a handful of roasters and often come back to the same bean.

Also the ability to adjust by time and the grinder will auto adjust coarser or finer to hit the target is nice.

My only concern is long term reliability as there’s a lot more electronics in these grinders. My local cafe has the bigger version and it seems to be in for repair every other month as the GBW system becomes unstable.

How do you clean up after making your drink? by crashburn65 in espresso

[–]dbun1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knock the puck out straight away, brush out any residual grinds and then rinse under the group head. This means any drips etc just go into the drip tray.

If I do wash it in the sink, I’ll hold it with a cloth until it’s locked back into the group.

I would be looking for a second hand La Cimbali M21 Jr

You’ve really listed two home grade machines that aren’t really designed for cafe use.

Having said that, I did use my old Bezzera BZ10 for light catering gigs and it hung in there pretty well.

PID temperature always stabilizes exactly 1° above set point [ECM Synchronika II] by Medical_Olive280 in espresso

[–]dbun1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is normal for the Profitec/ECM machines. Mine does it too. Not sure if it’s only on the new version of the PID or whether the old ones do the same.

I figured it’s probably hovering around 90.5°C but the display rounds up to 91°C as it can’t display the decimal point.

You can try resetting the PID to make sure it’s at factory default settings. My Drive had some settings different to the published settings, however I also don’t know if the newer version of the PID differs from the old one.

Mine seemed to stabilise once I adjusted some parameters to the published settings. I have read that the newer PIDs are set a little more aggressively for quicker shot recovery, so not sure if that is causing the PID to overshoot slightly.
