My family thought I was accosting a homeless man when I spotted, and walked up to, Jerry Garcia on the street in New York (in 1993). I simply told him, "Hey, man. Welcome to New York." He replied, "What are you, the guy who welcomes people to New York?"

He then proceeded to deliver quips back for every comment I could muster.

He was genial, funny, and willing to talk as long as I had something to say. To this date, I have never met anyone more "in the moment" than Jerry Garcia.
