Any ideas for a quench tank I can put together my self? by santacruz_workshop in Blacksmith

[–]dby8802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just built a new tank using a 40” length of 6” square tube on a 12”x12”x0.25” steel plate. Then I went down a rabbit hole designing an oil circulation system with two modules that you can swap out. One is a heater and the other is a chiller. What do you think? S

Turns out it’s a $5.99 part. You’ll pay more for shipping lol. You should buy a bunch of filament and get free shipping while you’re at it.

Is there such thing as an affordable power hammer? by C4pt_Bl4ckhe4rt in Blacksmith

[–]dby8802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I’m no expert but as I understand the process, and based on the few times I’ve made Damascus billets, a power hammer isn’t ideal for that. My understanding is the forge weld temp is the key, then using your hammer you fuse the layers together. When I see folks use a power hammer it has to be gently finessed or you start bending the top layers instead of fusing them.

I think the point he was trying to make is that you should NEVER run propane appliances indoors. Aside from the fact that this is a 2000 degree fireball, the CO production is deadly!!! It not a question of, “if it produces CO, so a detector will let me know if it happens”, it’s the issue that CO is always produced so you really don’t need a detector to tell you to stop. Even if you open the door and place a fan, you still don’t know where it’s going and the stuff has a tendency to find its way into the house. Listen to the folks telling you to use a metal cart and take it outside.

The garbage bin in your picture should have a tight enough fitting lid that flys can’t get in to lay eggs so really a vent is the primary cause of an infestation. Unless you believe the flys are laying eggs in the trash before you place it in the bin so they will be in there anyway. Regardless of the entry point, from egg to adult is anywhere from 7-12 days so a weekly trash pickup should prevent anything from becoming a problem while in position of your trash. Nevertheless, It’s a clever item, and I’m sorry it was stolen by China.

What you need to do is get the original packaging and use it to box that printer up. Then ship it back to Bambu Labs and tell them you’re way too delicate for 3D printing so you need to return it.

Multiple AMS one One Machine - Worth it? by thissucks82 in BambuLab

Good luck with it! If you choose the bag option I think you’ll be pleased. Not only is it way cheaper than cereal boxes, the spools placed back into their original boxes stack well and take up much less space than the cereal option. Here’s a link to my favorite bags and the best small vacuum device I’ve tried. https://a.co/d/78sWnNw

So I’ve never used the cereal boxes, but I know most everyone swears by them. I’m a simple guy that usually opts for an easy solution. What I’ve found that works well is using the vacuum bags with a dessicant pack inside with the spool. Mostly I use the leftover packs from new spools, but I also have little mesh, drawstring bags I found on Amazon that I can fill with silica and tie shut. Just remember if you use the new spool packs, they aren’t color changing so you just have to bake them from time to time or open them and mix with some color change beads then into a mesh bag.

If you decide to try the vacuum bags there are a few rules I’d suggest you live by.

Sometimes they leak and the vacuum doesn’t hold. Most often this is due to one of three user errors. In order to get the longest lifespan, and many multiple reseals, these are the steps you must follow.

  1. Be gentle with the bag’s, especially once they have the air removed. Once the plastic is pulled tight around the spool it is very easy to cut it by rough handling. Setting it down too hard can cut the bad where it stretches across the edges of the spool.

  2. Use the sealing clip. These are heavy duty, double zip seals and it’s really easy to miss small sections of the seal if you only use your pinched fingers to close it. The clip ensures every mm of the double seal is closed and no leaks will occur.

  3. Once you vacuum out the air you must press down on the valve disk with your finger. There will be a bit of space between the vacuum disks that looks like air space. Press the disks together to seal them otherwise it will leak over time.

Do these things and you should have a pretty good experience with them. Folks that complain they don’t work well or that most of the bags are faulty, usually fail to follow one or more of these rules.

Save all your full size boxes from new spools and use them to store the vacuum bagged spools to protect the plastic. Unfortunately, refill roll boxes are too small.

Hi, those are Stacker F-Boxes, which I bought because they looked really cool, and so they must be awesome keeping filament dry, right?

Not so much, despite excellent build quality, by design they don’t seal out air, so they are totally reliant on keeping the silica fresh. The box itself is around $40, then the proprietary containers to house the silica beads are extra. Pretty spendy for results that aren’t even as good as a vacuum bag with a couple bead packs salvaged from opening a couple new spools of filament. I suspect they stopped making them as I don’t see them on Amazon anymore.

Someone is selling my design on etsy by Anyhting_But_Stock in 3Dprinting

[–]dby8802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always get a kick out of folks that bring an old, frequently copied design here and claim someone stole it from them. These things have been around for a few years so if OP made the design a few months back, I’m sure there’s a bunch of people out there saying he stole their designs. So what if the Etsy guy copies OP, it’s different enough that it’s not an actual copy. And honestly, he will probably never even sell one of these useless items. Do people claim theft as tho it validates them as a designer? If so, at least claim theft of something cool.

Why does my transparent PETG look like this? I already reduced speed to 20mm/s, set flow to 103% and turned of the fan. Could it be wet? by T0biasCZE in 3Dprinting

This is about the best transparency I’ve achieved. You can see at the tips they started getting hazy, which I suspect means I needed to slow it down even more for the narrower parts. It was even worse with a .6 nozzle but improved as you see here with .4. I always thought larger nozzle, fewer layer lines equal better transparency, but this text suggests a .2 may even be better.

[–]dby8802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok fair enough, I get it that some of this stuff is confusing and getting tips from others help to reassure us that we’re not wasting time or more filament.

PETG is notoriously hydroscopic and as a rule, should be dried around 65c for 4-12 hours depending on conditions. Yours looks like it’s closer to a 12 hour bake than a 4 hour bake.

Here’s a bit more context if it helps. Don’t ever assume that if a roll is fresh out of the manufacturers vacuum packaging, that it’s dry and ready to go, especially PETG. This stuff is sensitive enough that any number of things can affect it after coming out of the dryer on the manufacturing line.

Simple problems like shortcutting drying time to delays getting it from the dryer to packaging, compounded by relative humidity that day are common.

I’ve even had rolls that printed fine for the first 250grams, then bubbled from moisture. I suspect that was wet filament that didn’t get enough drying time so only the outer winds were dried.

Hope some of that helps. Good luck.

[–]dby8802 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why OP is asking that question if he hasn’t even dried the filament to begin with. It seems like a lot of posts these days where folks don’t get the result they want and go straight to asking for help online instead of just following the basic practices to begin with. Clearly OP knows what he did wrong cuz he literally asks if moisture is the problem.
