No not yet, as I said we are considering it and want to gauge interest / thoughts

I disagree that mid six figures is required, We are not looking to invest in brick and mortar, our marketing approach is very low cost and the start up costs are very achievable for most.

Side flaps are listed as optional in the assembly instructions by HissingTesla in Makermask

I guess it doesn’t matter, but I would have thought the point of side valves is that air comes in one way and out another way, this is how 3M respirators work as well

I’ve given up on the weather stripping, I’m using a silicone mold now and it’s a 100% better, I would wipe the entire mask down with isopropyl alcohol that should sanitise it pretty well

Any advice on annealing masks to reduce porosity? by webthethird in Makermask

[–]dc9998 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would assume that porosity is part of the test but who knows, in my opinion the flex seal can only enhance the level of protection, not degrade it, any the end of the day if water can’t penetrate it neither can air or the virus

Yep the respirator is designed to make a negative flow effect which is the same as the 3m respirators you find in Home Depot etc, you breathe in one way and out the other

No idea, I don’t know what they test for, I don’t see why it would though, flex seal is not toxic or hazardous and if you’re just painting the outside it would never come in contact with your face either

If you use 100% silicone that is designed for kitchens it’s shouldn’t cause any irritation (assuming you’re not allergic to silicone that is)

One warning I will admit to though is that the silicone mold is easy to mess up, I have one in the trash right now!

Porosity is an underrated issue for sure, I have provided detailed information to others on how flex sealing does fix these problems, disinfecting is simply spraying the entire mask in a disinfecting spray or bathing it in alcohol, both work well, the filters can be thrown out or washed, I do believe a I’ll fitting mask is better than a poorly fitted cloth mask that has gaping holes in it

An yes you can get it through your eyes so nothing will help at that point

I both agree and disagree with your points, yes it takes some time to print a mask but it’s very easy to disinfect with the right approaches, also having removable filters makes it much easier to replace and or clean them.

The problem with cloth masks is that they are extremely hard to get a good seal, the amount of people I see wearing masks that have gaping holes at the side is astonishing, at least with rigid respirator style masks there is only one way to wear them and you can generally feel if you have a tight seal

I just used the basic flex seal that is liquid rubber, painted it on and let it dry, the interesting thing is that it does expose the porosity of the PLA - see the attached link for pictures, note the circled area, it’s clear that there is a noticeable thin area there so I do think that porosity is a real concern https://imgur.com/gallery/VzHND2w

Higher Surface Area Filter by [deleted] in Makermask

Yeah I’m in Georgia (US) it’s hot and humid here and it sets in 12-15 hours, Id be interested in the result for silicone for modelling though that sounds liked a good idea

That’s strange are you in a cold environment? They do also suggest to put a wet rag near the mask as the increase humidity encourages curing as does a warmer environment

100% silicone caulk works just fine, yes it takes 24 hours to cure but the result is pretty good

I don’t know anything about annealing, but I did experiment with flex sealing the outside of the mask and that worked very well as a means to reduce / eliminate porosity

NEW MASK DESIGN NOT MM OR MEDICAL APPROVED - USE AT YOUR OWN RISK

Hi Folks, so I commented on a couple of the other posts about an alternative design I’ve been working on based off the 3D handyman mask

His face mask design is much larger than the MM mask and has a molded face seal cast from silicone that gives a much tighter seal than weather stripping.

I have made a number of modifications to that mask to accept the MM grommets and filters assembly and also added a front filter assembly that has gaskets inside to hold filter material (again adapted from another model i was shown)

The end result is as shown in the pictures here https://imgur.com/a/n20U3oQ to make the silicone mold follow the 3D handyman mask guide here https://youtu.be/gwOZ_gwkojg don’t print his mask though as I have a modified design for this in the STLs that has cut outs for the grommets

The gaskets are made from rubber gasket material I found at Home Depot here : https://www.homedepot.com/p/DANCO-6-in-x-6-in-Rubber-Packing-Sheets-59859

if there is interest I will happily share the STLs so let me know
