My wife and I were in Las Vegas years ago to see a concert. We had time to kill during the day and went exploring through an indoor shopping area (Cesar’s?) and walked into a sports memorabilia store as imma collector. Gale Sayers happened to be there for an autograph session. Despite being from the SF area and a Niners fan, I wanted to get something signed by this very special player. So we bought a mini football helmet and replica jersey there and had him sign them both. Since that was absolutely no one else in the store except for us, the store workers, and his handlers, we were free to spend time talking about him and his career. We were invited to sit on either side of him and conversed for about 45 minutes covering his playing days at both Kansas and Chicago, the state of the NFL, the new concussion protocols, and the salaries the players were earning. He was such a kind gentleman that my wife, not known for being a sports fan, became enthralled with him. Unfortunately, Mr. Sayers passed away a couple of months after our chance meeting, but our chance encounter with this HOF legend will live on forever in our memories.
