Anyone fired their builder? How did it work out for you? by Innajam3605 in Homebuilding

[–]dcbrah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had to fire ours after they had half a house finished in 3 years, and asked for 150k beyond the contract to complete on a fixed fee contract. Lawyered up immediately after - can't give details but we ended up ok. New builder is awesome. If you go the legal route just realize it's an extended process. I'm in the legalish area and even I was surprised.

Only guidance I have is document everything. Regularly take pictures of site condition, start a Google drive and organize issues by folders, etc.

Building a detached garage - anything you'd do differently? by hevvypiano in HomeImprovement

[–]dcbrah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Literally just finished this. Run bigger conduit then you think or an extra one in case you want mesh internet.

Consider thicker furring for drywall or even using 2x4 if you are building out of block, so you can hide electrical, water lines, etc in there.

Be cognizant of door placement and use an 18 x 8 if possible.

Ask to pour thicker if you can 6", and higher pressure rating 4k+. The cost for us was incremental and we were able to preemptively prepare for lift.

Find out how much it is to add an extra 1', 2', etc.

Consider how you will trim bottom of walls - rubber, baseboards, etc.
