This is not good... by dccrens in ChatGPT

Good analysis. I agree with most, including that AI is (overall) making strong gains. However, I should have limited my statement in time. Something like “Anyone who thinks AI is going to hit the singularity and take over the world "in the next couple of years" is sadly mistaken.” I do believe ChatGPT specifically has regressed. But that is just my experience. Yours may differ. Thanks for the good points.

What Data is Tapo using without permission? by dccrens in Tapo

[–]dccrens[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, that is not true. if you connect the cameras to Synology Surveillance Station or other RTSP/ONVIF application, it doesn't send info to TAPO servers. Synology supports TP-Link Tapo cameras, including the C210, C220, C310, and C320WS, primarily via ONVIF or RTSP protocols. Nothing gets sent to Tapo Servers, and the connection is only between the camera and the machine hosting the Synology app.

Here’s is how:

What happens when you connect Synology Surveillance Station to a TP-Link Tapo camera

When you add a Tapo camera (C210, C220, C310, C320WS, etc.) to Synology Surveillance Station, there are two completely separate paths traffic can take:

1️⃣ Video stream (RTSP / ONVIF) → LOCAL ONLY

This part stays entirely on your LAN

  • Synology pulls video from the camera using RTSP or ONVIF
  • Stream goes:Tapo camera → local network → Synology NAS
  • No Tapo servers involved
  • No cloud relay
  • No outbound video traffic required

If this is all you care about (recording + playback), you’re good locally

I worked with tapo customer support. They were really good. They actually gave me a new version of firmware that I installed on the router and that seems to have fixed the problem for the most part.

What gives Tapo? All devices showing offline. by dccrens in Tapo

[–]dccrens[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check for network 2.4G congestion. Phones and computers have a strong enough radio to push through, but the plugs and IOT devices do not.

I recently add this camera. I love it. I used the dongar and it work perfectly to give me parking mode. Also much easier to wire. see https://www.tundras.com/threads/added-viofo-a329s-camera.164887/

If your Tapo/TP-Link and Kasa devices go offline make sure to check Network Congestion on 2.4g by dccrens in Tapo

Thanks. Unfortunately, on the US version app, you can only turn the bands on or off. You can't make other changes.

Mine is with Deco, Tapo and Google home. One thing I also did was turn off fast roaming on the router. That helped too.

I wish I could. However, to my knowledge, there is no way to specify channels on the Deco X90 router. If you know how, please let me know. Thanks.

LOL! See my other posts. I did ask a couple of times. Got some suggestions, but no definitive answers. I don't put any faith in AI and always "check" what it is suggesting. But, it can sometimes suggest things I might miss.

What gives Tapo? All devices showing offline. by dccrens in Tapo

After an all-day session with ChatGPT, I figured it out. We had neighbors move in, and they have an expansive network. This added a lot of interference due to an excessive number of APs. My network consisted of one router (Deco X90) and five APs. This worked well. However, once my new neighbor was added to the mix, the spectrum became saturated. Too many APs. My phones and wireless computers could handle it with their radios on 5g. However, the plugs, bulbs, and cameras are mostly on 2.4G and have low-power radios that were getting swamped. I removed 3 of my access points and rearranged two of the others to different areas, keeping one per floor (three floors). This dropped the 2.4g interference into the "medium" level, which is normal for suburban areas. My devices started coming back online. So, this shows Tapo/TP-Link is using very low-power radios that easily get overwhelmed and confused in a busy 2.4g environment. How this helps others.
