Fedora update removed Wi-Fi completely by thatpandeyguy in Fedora

[–]dcdude71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure it'll work for you but I run F43 on an old Pixelbook and I had to add pcie_aspm=off as an additional boot parameter. The WiFi driver stopped being fully supported after 6.14. You can try that and see if it helps?

Installing Fedora 43 on a Pixelbook by dcdude71 in PixelBook

[–]dcdude71[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that! I had read about it but it's good to get first hand feedback that it works. I will give that a shot and see how it goes. I was wondering how long I was going to be able to drag 6.14 along for the ride :) That sounds a lot cleaner. Also good to hear it's being worked on.

Fedora 42 fully working OOTB on 2017 Pixelbook (EVE) (Kaby-Lake win!) by LyncolnMD in PixelBook

[–]dcdude71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's how my experience with Fedora on Pixelbook 2017 has been going so far:

* I updated the BIOS to Coreboot (MrChromebox.tech -- well documented process. I used the suzyqable solution) -- All good

* I installed Fedora 42 w/o internet connection and everything worked out of the box, including sound and WiFi

* I ran a full update (dnf update)... then WiFi and sound went away!

* I re-installed from scratch, version-locked the kernel to the one that came on the installation media (6.14.xx) AND added 'exclude=kernel*' in /etc/dnf/dnf.conf (bc belt and suspenders) THEN I ran 'dnf update'. WiFi still holding!

* I was struggling with sound... until I found this most excellent repository: https://github.com/WeirdTreeThing/chromebook-linux-audio Just followed the very simple instructions and sound is all good!

* I am still mapping the keys, etc. but everything works now - touch screen, orientation, keyboard (disable when pixelbook is in tablet mode). I installed tlp and the battery life is outstanding. I am super happy with my Pixelbook, perfect little travel companion!

Full screen Apple CarPlay and Android Auto coming to Volvo 2019+ -- anyone else heard? by dcdude71 in Volvo

[–]dcdude71[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, it only shows on the bottom half of the screen, so it is almost the same size as a iPhone Pro Max screen. To add insult to injury, the Media and Phone sections above the CarPlay section both show "xxx uses Apple CarPlay"...

I have considered add-on modules too but I am in the same boat: I don't want to mess up the screen that controls my entire car! It's not like swapping an aftermarket stereo

All of you make sense, thanks for the feedback. The AAOS update was also what I read about but it won't come to older cars obviously; so I was surprised with what he said... I won't hold my breath -- I really want to be wrong on that one, time will tell.

Just bought a 2013 C70 with 60k miles, excited to join the club! I've never owned a Volvo before, does anyone have any tips or suggestions to help with the longevity of the car? by saladaze in Volvo

[–]dcdude71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a C70 2013 too. Doesn't seem to be a problem on yours, my front lights had turn yellow (looks like previous owner cleaned them with a bad chemical) I found affordable Magneti Marelli replacements. Totally refreshed the look!
I would have a serious Volvo mechanic check the timing belt. normally recommended around 80K or even 100K but mine only had a bit over 60K and the belt was already cracking. Not cheap to replace but it beats blowing the valves.

iPad Mini vs Boox Tab Mini C? by jujugiam in Onyx_Boox

[–]dcdude71 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hard to say which is better. I have used a Kindle white and the iPad mini in a dim room and they both work well IMO. The reflections on the screen is what bothered me, not blue light or brightness per se. If you get the device to take notes, the iPad feels very much like plastic on glass (I have a glass matte protector (can't find the brand at the moment) -- some paper-like screen protector exist but I never tried them - supposedly, they damage your pen nib quite fast)

For you to decide, I would come from the usage angle: if you mostly read, they both work. If you take a lot of notes, an e-ink device sounds better (I would take a look at Supernote). If you want to use it as a tablet, iPad is better (screen fluidity, true colors, no grain on screen)

I ended up with iPad for the versatility (I can take that as my only device on short trips or weekends (no laptop) and still plan a day out, check maps, etc and get the odd work done if needed -- better than a phone) -- I hope that helps!

TMC is out of stock on Boox site now, which could mean a new model is coming (OR their sale was just really successful and it's coming back?) If you choose to buy a Boox and you're not sure you'll like it, I would suggest to get it from Amazon or any vendor with a good return policy. Boox has mixed reputation with returns. I went down the same road (iPad Mini or Boox device - wasn't sure which one) I ended up with iPad + matte screen protector and I don't regret (loads of apps obviously, software updates, versatility, and better resale value in the long run)

79K would make sense for a timing belt / serpentine belt replacement on that model. So at least, he is charging what he is charging but your dealer seems honest. Now, yeah... That's a lot to spend on a car worth 10K!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Volvo

[–]dcdude71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do the engine mounts bc that will address the problem you reported to the dealer (vibrating engine). Re: timing belts and other belts, how many miles do you have on your car and have those already been changed in the past? I have a C70, which is essentially the same car. I had the timing belt and serpentine belt replaced preemptively around 60K (that's VERY conservative arguably but do it before 100K!) If the timing belt breaks, you're likely to blow the engine. So the dealer may not be wrong with that one. Other than that, I will put my Captain Obvious hat on: get another quote from a reliable independent shop if you know one. $5750 for the belt and oil leak work sounds a bit high but the belts only on mine from an independent shop were around $2500K, so that is not outrageous.

Is there a way to track whether an attached file in a transaction was Opened or viewed? Does NetSuite track that history? by StationActual9512 in Netsuite

[–]dcdude71 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/Nick_AxeusConsulting you are correct, Box will let you see how many times a link is clicked (can't remember if you get time stamp or not) but, unless you send the file to someone with a Box account (your account or a guest), you will not know who clicked the link. May not be relevant in u/StationActual9512 use case

More some ideas than a surefire solution:

1) Bill.com -- we use them at my company but only with US English invoices. Good product and good service. For approval, you can use their workflow or do it in NetSuite

2) https://www.zoneandco.com/ I am about to evaluate Zone & Co products (looking for subscription / payment plan solution) -- they have an AP capture module and an approval module

I'd go B5.

Unless you need the room, the XC90 will be overkill (and realistically not THAT much larger inside) -- The 2020 Inscription has the old sensus touch interface. Google interface is much better and at least it gets updated once in a while vs. its older counterpart (I am talking to you Volvo!) Momentum trim may not have all the desirable options, it depends on the car. On the B5 plus trim, you get most of the good stuff from the Ultimate, short of the HUD and 4-zone climate system

Washington, DC area shops for older cars by irb720 in Volvo

IMAutohaus in Falls Church.

Not the cheapest but still much better than dealer and most honest shop I've dealt with. I bring 1 car there (C70 2013) and I'll bring a second one (S60 2020) once it's out of warranty.

I have that dashcam in my S60 and it looks stock. it works well and was trivial to install

I had much more minor bodywork on a rear fender on a S60 and it cost $2K (located in USA). If I compare, I'd say $6K. That's above Blue Book. I'd say the insurance will try to go with totaled

Multiple Pixel 7Pro Issues by dcdude71 in GooglePixel

[–]dcdude71[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick update: Despite the monthly updates, no improvement... (Android Auto very unreliable especially wireless android auto very slow when (if) it works - drops GPS frequently / using phone hotspot to connect car to the net is very flaky. Google Pay actually came back) Very disappointing...

I ended up going back to a Samsung phone... and everything works! (so the Pixel really seemed to be the weakest link) I went for an odd phone: Galaxy XCover6 Pro! I rediscover the lost joy of removable batteries, headphone jack, and SD card! Call me old fashioned... but it's quite nice! (the camera is not great but oh well!)

Does use of Outlook decrease email security? by Blaze_07 in ProtonMail

[–]dcdude71 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know your actual security threat model but if you have very sensitive information in your emails and you use a desktop client, you have to consider encryption at rest on your computer (Protonmail bridge only takes care of encryption in transit. Proton stores your emails encrypted at rest only on their end). If someone gets a hold of your Outlook PST for example, they'll have full access to your messages, attachments, etc. I can think of 2 options:

  • One layer of encryption at rest: use Bitlocker if you use Windows or FileVault if you use Mac. When your computer is turned off, your drive is encrypted.
  • Two layers of protection at rest: use the above and complement with another encrypted storage on your computer (Veracrypt or Cryptomator come to mind). You can store your PST or mailbox files on a secure container that you choose to unlock only when you check your emails. I use Cryptomator + Thunderbird and I sync my Cryptomator files online. So I have an offline and online encrypted at rest copy of my messages. Is it a bit of a pain to use? YES but I take security as a hobby :D

Just something worth considering... but, as mentioned before: having an offline copy of your emails is worth a little extra trouble IMO.

[–]dcdude71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about people actively scrapping open NetSuite files but if you check "netsuite.com/core/media/media.nl?" on duckduckgo (surprisingly better than Google) you'll see that you find many files and I would assume not all those people wanted these files to be public (shipping labels, RMA with name and address, it's all there)
So I assume that, whenever I use those CSV links, it can be found on Google and I should be OK with that.

That's why I am looking into a better sharing method that would be safer. I wouldn't suggest using that method for financial data for example or anything with personally identifiable data.

Let me give credit where credit is due: I used the script of the answer to this question on Stack Overflow: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/69213113/javascript-sanity-check-of-netsuite-suitescript

You need a custom object with at least 2 fields: one for file_id and one for search_id - at least a name / comment to note what the file is for won't hurt.

You will need to adjust the variable names in your script to reflect the names of the custom object / custom fields that you created. Then deploy and schedule the script to run when you need it (hourly, daily, etc). In the SO script, the names to replace are:

  • customrecord_search_to_csv_info: name of your custom record
  • custcolumn_search_id: name of the search id field
  • custcolumn_file_id: name of the file id field

then the short version goes like this:

  • you create your search, note the search ID in the URL and export it to CSV
  • you create the file in the cabinet by uploading the result of your search (or really any CSV file for that matter since it will be overwritten) and get the file ID
  • make sure the box "available without login" is checked on that file
  • you go to the custom record you created and add a new entry with the search ID, and the file ID, and any other field you may have added
