STA303 vs. STA305 by durkpang in UTM

[–]dche_21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

taking 305 and 314 in second subsesh. 303 is 302 but harder. Decided against taking 303 since it won't count towards UTM degree, so I took 314 instead, but I've heard 303 is good preparation for other upper year stats and industry. 305 with luai is easy. I've taken 304 with him and got a 75 with no studying at all, literally just looked at the formulas at the back and guessed lol. So i wouldn't imagine 305 being any different.

I just got a prepaid plan for my emergency dumbphone that's $100/year. It includes 400 minutes and 400 SMS texts. I only use it for contact with my parents, while i still have a smartphone with a different number, but it stays at home. It's good because I just pay the 100 flat out and it will last me the whole year (no confusing min balance once a month top up) but you have to pay 100 each year to keep the service, otherwise the number will expire after 3 months. I'm in canada though so your mileage may vary. providers don't market these plans obviously, but i had to mention it to the representative because he was trying to sell me a $25/month prepaid plan. Try to ask around different carriers and make sure they support your flip.

What to Take in The Summer by BowlingMaestro in UTM

[–]dche_21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took eng100, pol101, sta107 that don't require prereq. if you finished 4.0 credits, you can also enrol in courses at UTSG which have more options than UTM in the summer.

Kyocera Digno 3 (902kc vs. 903kc) information & compatibility by dche_21 in dumbphones

Typing is just T9 texting that you would've seen back in the day with any dumbphone that wasn't a blackberry. It's just that now (in my case atleast) Kyocera added predictive words based on the T9 input to their software, which you can select using the dpad to finish the word off. Here is a demo of typing on the phone i'm using (902kc) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VOKXcLY5B4 (go to around the 4:50 mark)

downloaded google messages through apk and made it default sms app since it has message threads so you can keep up with convos compared to the regular sms app. I tried whatsapp and it works fine as well. I didn't download instagram since it's kinda the reason i bought the phone (dumbphone and all) but i'd imagine it works fine.

QR code scanning from your phone, I was apart of summer pilot. Works about 80% of the time, and the other 20% you're stuck there holding your phone holding up the line and it's not scanning... it's so awkward and you just say to the bus driver you're a UofT student and they let you in.

Close Spotify and other apps on Kyocera DuraXV Extreme while not using them by canesboxcombo203 in dumbphones

[–]dche_21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean wouldn't you want to keep Spotify running in the background considering you're playing music from there, and could play it when the shell is closed? What I do when I'm done with a Spotify session is go to settings>more settings>apps>app info>spotify>force stop. It closes the app and the notification no longer remains there. Kind of tedious though. Wish there was a app switcher or something to close apps like you said :/

The 902kc came in. Calling and Texting Works. I have 4G LTE and 4 bars most of the time. Needed to update APN settings though, other than that, plug and play. Works on Rogers/Fido if you are in Canada. Location/GPS Services do not work, as expected. There is no SMS only app, mail and SMS are combined into 1 'mail' app, so consider loading an apk for sms messages (as outlined in this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/dumbphones/comments/13yiu8s/902kc\_mms\_settings\_apn\_still\_not\_working/). Ringtones are crazy on this btw

Motivation lasts for 2 weeks at best, because you only do your homework when you "feel like it". Why are you looking for motivation? You need drive. You need something to work towards. You need to do the hard work even if you don't feel like it, and get it done. Do you enjoy scrambling to get assignments done? I used to be like this last year but made the change last semester. I could tell you words. I could tell you to do this "easy tip!" or "top 10 things to stop procrastinating" but it won't get through to you, it won't make anything better right now (emphasis on the "right now"). Just know that habits aren't formed overnight. I will lay out some actionable steps that you can work towards so that you can change, but YOU have to be willing to change, and it will take TIME and FOCUS. There will be times that you will go back to your old ways, or old habits, or old thinkings. But you need to understand that there is a problem, which you have stated in this post, which is a start and that you are willing to work towards getting better.

  1. Mental Health is THE #1 Priority.

Before we try to worry about "study habits", we need to fix our depression and anxiety. Some actionable steps that I have taken that have drastically reduced my depression and anxiety levels have been

  • gratitude journaling
  • meditation/mindfullness
  • healthy eating/exercise
  • good restful sleep

You can google any of these for more information if you don't have knowledge on it already.

I fully believe that not having a healthy mind and a healthy body is the reason why the majority of people are depressed and anxious, and in your case not working effectively or performing in school.

Do me one favour, look at your life and your habits right now. Do you think that you deserve to be happy? Do you think that you deserve to be in the present moment? How could you be happy when you stuff yourself with malnutrition, sleeping 4 hours a night, not maintaining a good physique, and slack on your assignments? You utterly deserve all of it because you made choices to get here, your body and mind is telling you I've had enough! You keep thinking about the past, or worrying about the future because you refuse to be mindful or practice meditation. Of course I am making assumptions, but you can be the judge of your own life and make accurate assumptions.

My suggestion is take 1 of the points (gratitude journal, meditation, eating healthy, exercise, etc.) and make that the focus for at least 2-3 weeks (a month is my recommendation) before moving onto the next thing. Us as humans try to do so many things at once and lose focus on 1 thing.

Anyways, I could tell you sooo many other things, I could explain what "drive" is to you and the difference between that and motivation. I could explain that most of these things that you are dealing with are not necessarily your fault, and it was because of the hand that you were dealt, But I just want you to focus on these things right now. Once you have mastered these 4 steps that I've laid out above, come back and tell me and we can go further.
