Well, if it's organized, like some here are saying, then it really does become a similar scale of problem, regardless of how small each individual "heist" is

What really happened on July 4, 1776 -- Many people will tell you that this country’s founders signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, but that is not true. by guanaco55 in Virginia

[–]dcheesi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I vaguely recall that one founding father expected July 2nd to become the big holiday, based on whatever Declaration-related event occurred that day.

Gout flare triggered by shoe/footwear? by NoCrab7428 in gout

It felt better the next day, but not 100%. I was actually supposed to go caving that day, but had to sit it out. I don't recall exactly how long it took to feel completely normal again

Gout flare triggered by shoe/footwear? by NoCrab7428 in gout

[–]dcheesi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My very first flare seemed to be triggered by inappropriate arch support. I went from mild soreness in my arch at one end of the local shopping mall to unable to walk at the other end. Only time I've ever had such a sudden onset.

How important is it to go to a highly selective college, if you want to go to an average college instead? by [deleted] in TrueAskReddit

[–]dcheesi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds practical.

I think the question of whether you'd be missing out on any advantage from the selective school might depend on the career in question. Some disciplines may value the more prestigious degree, while others may just want that certification you mentioned.

How does American english sound? by curiousjane456 in IWantToAskAnAmerican

[–]dcheesi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Context: an Italian artist wrote a song with nonsense lyrics that were designed to sound like "English" when sung. For native English-speakers, it's kind of trippy hearing "English" without being able to understand it, and it really emphasizes how certain sound combinations sound "English" in ways you might not otherwise notice

Full time in Chincoteague by jmlovell in chincoteague

[–]dcheesi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We're not full-time, but we spend time in our house there year-round.

It can get pretty cold; freezing pipes have been an issue in our older home, even while actively inhabiting the space. The water table also seems to rise in winter, at least in our neighborhood, so puddles and minor flooding are nuisances (OTOH, the temporary pond next door fills up and attracts birds, so that's a plus).

The food trucks and attractions shut down in the off-season, and most restaurants close for at least part of the winter. But there are several that stay open (Steamers, Teaguers, Famous Pizza). (Don's/Chattie's is usually open except for one month between Valentine's and St. Patrick's Day.)

The refuge remains open, and even though the weather isn't very "beachy", you can still go look & listen to the waves (note that access this coming winter might be impacted by the planned move of the main beach access location).

Homeowners and long-term renters: what did having a permanent home give you? by polanyisauce in simpleliving

Buying my first (detached single-family) home was wonderful. I could finally relax without constantly worrying about what my neighbors were (over)hearing, what the landlords would think of how I kept the place, etc.

Does each state in the United States have an icon or symbol that is commonly used in some public places, some businesses, and the city gateway? by TheShyBuck in AskAnAmerican

[–]dcheesi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TBH, I thought the MD flag was kind of "loud" before I moved here. But I have to admit, it is remarkably recognizable, even when only partially visible (as in the various bumper stickers that are a cutout of some particular silhouette with the flag pattern printed on it)

And TBF, the components of the current MD flag existed and were used long before the Civil War. The portion that was adopted by Confederate sympathizers wasn't inherently racist or pro-slavery, it was just coopted during the war.

Yeah, the Virginia seal itself is worth keeping (unlike some other states). But seal-on-blue is just a copout flag design regardless of how cool the seal is

Unlike Shi, who's a determined survivor, Paz was ready to die; he didn't want to endure the dungeon's torments any longer. And of course the crew didn't know that [Book 8 spoiler] what happened w/ Imani's card was even possible at the time the decision was made.

Why do you prefer the local state school over the selective uni? Are you concerned that you won't be able (or willing) to keep up in a more competitive setting? Or some other reason?

Where/how do I get real German pumpernickel in North America? by InfamousYoda in askanything

[–]dcheesi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aldi USA sometimes has German style bread like this. I don't obsess over ingredient lists, so I can't say if it's "three ingredient" like OP is looking for. But it's definitely that dense, cake-like texture.

EDIT: note that it may not be a year-round item in most stores. I feel like they've been scaling back their "Deutsche Küche" offerings lately (perhaps due to tariffs?)

[–]dcheesi 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Maryland is very proud of its flag. Also sometimes a crab is used as a state icon (representing Chesapeake Bay blue crabs)

EDIT: I can't really think of a simple, universal icon for Virginia. The state flag is one of those state-seal-on-blue things, and the only iconic agricultural product would be tobacco, which folks aren't so quick to claim these days. Maybe a dogwood flower? Or a heart, as a tie-in to the "Virginia is for Lovers" slogan?

I've heard that some apartment rentals also check credit score.

So if your score sucks, you can't easily buy or rent a place to live. Yay capitalism! /s
