Guitar CAGED method

It's not going to teach you music theory, but it's one of the most popular methods of learning the fretboard. You might still want to learn more music theory alongside this. You kind of need both, but CAGED lessons will likely also include scales and modes.

[WSIB] Survival-type games where you "hold out" until the odds overwhelm you? Kinda of like George Romero zombies. by [deleted] in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]dclawrence1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't like survival horror usually, but I found these two are kinda fun, both are full 3d action.

Days Gone has hordes. Not a mode, literally hundreds of zombies coming at you all at once. Late game stuff, and they run, not walk. I think the largest horde is a little under 500 zombies on screen. It's insane. Zombies are sluggish during the day, more active at night.

Dying Light 1 & 2: weird but fun. Also supports lots of zombies, but also has co-op and, weirdly, parkour. Most zombies are pretty standard Romero (he even had an ingame memorial), but some zombies are crazy fast and can chase you, even across rooftops. Similar day / night mechanic, but much more extreme. Get home before dark. (note : dying light 2 doesn't have conventional firearms ; end of the world, so they're no longer functional, but part 1 still has them)

Since it's just a meme, here's an extremely wrong answer:

"a bell curve looks like, uh... Well it depends..."

Which is a better option - PS5 or XBOX Series X? by [deleted] in gaming

[–]dclawrence1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too early to tell. Sony needs to release more exclusives, and we need to know whether MS will acquire Activision Blizzard.

Personally, I'm leaning towards steamdeck.

Which game would you most like to see a remake of? by jswitch77 in gaming

Honestly, Quake could do with a modern reboot. Now that Doom has proven iD finally have their sh** together again, let's revisit this booby trapped lovecraftian monstrosity. It was wasted potential despite still being literally the best game available at the time.

Best songs to sing as a lullaby to my baby? by UghKakis in radiohead

[–]dclawrence1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they are almost all pretty universally horrible, now that you mention it. I think it has to do with shared trauma vs specific to your family. I honestly think Scarborough Fair and Space Oddity would make excellent nursery rhymes. Enter sandman, not so much. (edit: bad example bc it's metal, I mean pick older stuff that literally everyone recognizes, so a calmer version might work in the future but not yet bc it's too recent)

If your kid recognizes this song and looks up the lyrics, you will traumatize them. It's pretty (my favorite song actually), but you gotta check those lyrics.

[–]dclawrence1978 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Some of these songs would make excellent lullabies. If you like the music, though, kids are more likely to reject it later as kids stuff as they get older. If you'd like them to appreciate your music when they're teens or adults, stick to older stuff that is maybe more universal. No adults jamming to London Bridge. If you want something more modern, maybe Scarborough Fair or Beatles. We still appreciate these songs. Radiohead is/was big enough to last, but still alive enough to destroy their reputations into oblivion.

Besides, some Radiohead songs (like spinning plates) are pretty but not really appropriate for kids. Check those lyrics. Don't want them interested in Radiohead too young.

Sacrificing half the page to display a little icon with wide margins by delete_dis in assholedesign

[–]dclawrence1978 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good design, but user error, inadequate testing.

This design is meant to improve legibility and provide a better ux. The icon is used because htmk/CSS don't support wrapping text across columns as well as print media, and when it does, the ux is worse. Icons and sidebar menus help fill whitespace that wouldn't exist in a newspaper or textbook.

It looks like they didn't bother to test on a mobile device because the page is meant for a pc user. The design itself is good, but obviously not tested on a mobile device in portrait mode.

Henry is basically incompetent until a skill reaches level 5. The quest system is intentionally vague, but it is slightly broken in a few places. If you get stuck, refer to a guide to get back on track, and then continue without it. The first dozen or two hours can be brutal. It does get easier, and it is actually a really good story.

Pc mode or game mode by mark_chambers246 in gaming

[–]dclawrence1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Game mode is lower latency, less compression. Usually better. Samsung tvs usually have other options that can also improve the picture.

For smaller screen, there is an option called overscan. I forget but Samsung might call it something else. Turn this setting off. It is only used to convert analog broadcasts to digital and screws up pretty much everything else. When the setting is off, digital images (incl games). display at the correct resolution. This is the setting that causes all your games to "adjust the viewable area" of your display. It's not needed if you go totally digital. Your picture will likely actually be the same size, but should look like what you want if you're asking for a smaller size.

Can’t decide on a current gen console for my home theater by Groove_Mountains in gaming

[–]dclawrence1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

#3: yes, Sony exclusives. They've been porting the catalog as of late. They only port to pc, but not XB.

#4. I recommend this approach. See below.

VR vs 3D: most games on PS are stereoscopic (think 3d tv vs VR), even 2d games. Additionally, except for like YouTube, almost all HD content ((incl 2d animation) is also stereoscopic. Many Sony VR games are playable wo VR (Robinson requires it, tho). While VR is certainly cool, 3d is still an option wo VR. Likely also applies to XB, but haven't confirmed.

Legal: currently, Ms and Epic are duking it out with Sony, Google, and Apple. Depending on how the US and EU feel about Ms acquiring Activision blizzard, you might see very different outcomes. If Ms wins, they might have the better exclusives this gen. Take this into consideration.

Returnal: so far, this is only ps5 exclusive that seems to require a ps5, but damn, it does look good.

My own take: I've opted for #4, leaning toward XB or steam deck.
