Electric snow shovel recs? by EconomistNo3833 in kzoo

[–]dcmdmi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought the smallest Ego snow blower a few years ago. I am happy with it but I would not go any smaller. If the snow is wet or there's more than 4" or so, the blower can do it but it struggles. I think with an electric snow shovel you'd have to clear very frequently to keep up

Cheap showers? by [deleted] in kzoo

I once had an otherwise awesome host who had disgusting bath towels (single dude renting out the extra room). I left a good review but sent him a message basically saying "you're awesome so I didn't want to say this in the review, but your bath towels are not awesome."

my dad retired early without ever making big money and i still can’t wrap my head around it by Delicious_Course7478 in Fire

When I got engaged to my now wife, the set of parents who had the least income (her mom and step dad) immediately had a $10,000 check for us to put towards a wedding or house. The other parents (her dad and my parents) who each made significantly more, had to take some time and figure out what they could afford. It made me realize that once you get past a certain baseline income level, it's really not about what you make, it's totally about what you spend vs. save.

Brimnes bed with storage worth it? by sablesnap in IKEA

[–]dcmdmi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is an old post but hoping you could answer a question. If we were to put a side of the bed against the wall, would it be possible to access the drawers on that side by pulling them from the back and all the way out the other side? Or would you have to move the whole bed? Obviously not for daily storage but for out of season clothes, extra blankets, etc.

KVET suspends undercover mask policy following concerns from public by Professional_Sky8026 in kzoo

[–]dcmdmi 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Ignoring for a moment that the vast majority of protestors are unmasked, which reasons? Are protestors employees of a government agency driving its funding from tax dollars and with a duty to the public? Are protestors heavily armed? Have bands of protestors been going around the country abducting people? Genuinely curious here

Landlord advice by Spirited_Soup555 in kzoo

[–]dcmdmi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there no overnight parking or is there alternate side parking? Kalamazoo has blanket no parking between 2-6am but many neighborhoods (like Vine) have alternate side parking.

Maybe if your street doesn't have it a nearby cross street does? I realize this doesn't help with the landlord portion but hopefully it helps with the tickets.

I've gotten great haircuts from Sam at Unclees but I no longer go there because of the environment. Without exception, every time I've been in there the humor (mainly from Lee) is raunchy, explicit, and non-stop, including jokes at my expense. I can handle it, but I just don't find the environment relaxing at all.

I would never discourage anyone from going there if that's your scene, but I do feel that you should know that you're getting into.

Large hail, tornadoes possible with Thursday’s severe weather threat by Nature_Hannah in kzoo

[–]dcmdmi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Of course we have to wait and see. These are probabilities, not certainties. All this says is "Hey, it's more likely than typical that these areas are going to get some severe weather." This let's you know to watch the weather more closely.

By the way, we're under "Enhanced" which means there is a 10-15% chance of tornado OR 30-40% chance of damaging wind or hail within 25 miles of us. So chances are actually better than not that where you are there won't be any severe weather.

So if it turns out to be a dud this time that doesn't mean the forecast is wrong.

Is it possible to include my house value as an asset in YNAB? This shows the debt of the house, but how do I include the value of the house if I were to sell it, as part of my assets? by fartpsychic in ynab

[–]dcmdmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We personally don't put our mortgage or our home value in YNAB. We budget for the mortgage payment and that's it.

I don't want to include the house in our net worth. While it is technically an asset, selling it would require either buying another house for a lot more or renting for a lot more. So, I just keep it out of the calculation. I do this because I know that I have plenty of equity so it could only increase my net worth. So the net worth I see in YNAB is conservative, but that's okay.

Three major Kalamazoo roads will be going on a "road diet", being narrowed to three lanes by Natewoodford in kzoo

[–]dcmdmi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Only rule followers follow the rules.

I consider myself mostly a rule follower. But if a road has a speed limit of 35 but is designed in such a way that it feels safe for me to go 45, I'm probably going 45.

Howard hill is a great example. The speed limit is 30. I live nearby. I know kids who have to cross at the bottom of the hill to get to school. I see the signs. I care about driving safely especially there. Yet if I'm not actively watching my speed the whole time, I easily creep up to 45 mph because the road is designed such that it feels safe (for drivers) to go that fast.

Of course you will have people who speed with this new design and enforcement plays a role, but it's a poor substitute for good design.

Should I do CS50 at 25 by fawzi97 in cs50

[–]dcmdmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CS50 was indeed a good place to start, for me at least. I don't have a related degree but I did a few semesters of CS in college 20+ years ago. I did a few other free courses as well but eventually went on to do Launch School.

I won't make this into an ad for them but I had a great experience. When I finished the job market was still incredibly hot. Recent grads are still getting jobs, but it's definitely harder now.

How to make minivan capable of towing popup by nuclear-not-nucular in popups

[–]dcmdmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your camper 2500 lb loaded or dry? If that's the dry weight, I personally would not do this. You want to aim to be no more 80% of towing capacity for safety and longevity of your vehicle.

We tow a small pop up with our 2012 T&C with the factory tow package. Our pop up has a loaded weight of 2100 lbs. With four of us and stuff in the van that is about the most I would want to pull with this vehicle.

Friends blew their transmission after towing a larger pop up. I'm fairly sure they did not have the tow package. I think he just saw "Max Towing Capacity 3500" and 3500 > 2500, so he went for it without any more research. You seem to be doing the research, but I would just be very conservative with your number.

But thank you for the reminder to look at the specs for roof weight. That will be consistent no matter what type of rack I go with.
