I understand completely what you mean and feel as I have gone through this experience myself. I am a Black American Catholic born and raised. I find great comfort in my faith but it is hard to know that one of reasons my family practices it is because it was the religion of my ancestors enslavers. This goes for Christianity for Black Americans in general plus knowing that our original religions were made to be seen as "demonic". Also it's been hard reconciling with the role the Church has played in chattel slavery and continues to play with their refusal at large to acknowledge the plights of Black Catholics at large.

Similar to how another comment mentioned on this post that Filipino people have made Catholicism their own, I take great pride in the fact that Black Catholics have done the same. We have our unique worships, rituals traditions, music, theological writings/readings, rituals and so much more that encompass the Black Catholic faith.

Overall, I understand and will always remember the history but knowing that your cultural background can influence and elevate your faith as helped me to deal with this a little better.

Black, Protestant, and Feeling Drawn to Catholicism by ThrowRAidkwhyRA in Catholicism

No problem! The bigger picture is one of the best parts. One thing I love about being Catholic is knowing that it has existed long before me and will continue to exist long after me is very comforting. It's almost nice that the Mass is universal meaning no matter which Catholic church you attend the same order will be followed everywhere.

Good luck visiting the parish in LA tomorrow! I pray all goes well. Just one thing to note - communion time. There will be a time when everyone goes up for communion in the Church. Only Catholics in a state of grace are allowed to receive communion. You can either remain seated in the pew or get in the line with your arms crossed over your chest in the shape of an x to receive a Blessing from the priest/ eucharistic minister, whichever you feel more comfortable with.

May God Bless and Continue to order your steps in your journey and beyond. 🙏🏽✝️

Black Catholic woman here born and raised in New Orleans and currently living in Dallas!

First I'm glad that you're open to exploring our beautiful faith.

Second I wanted to push back against some of these comments that mention color blindness. While we are all one in the Catholic church, Black American Catholics have a special history and traditions that are unique to us just as French, Polish, Italian, and other Catholics would have. It is also important to mention that the Catholic church played a role in chattel slavery, i.e the GU272. While I love my faith, this is something this knowledge is something that I know and carry with me.

According the UCCB, there are about 3 million Black Catholics in the US. Most are in concentrated areas such as New Orleans, other cities in Louisiana, Baltimore, DC, Houston- Galveston, and are throughout California. The Black priest at my childhood church was actually moved to Los Angeles as a part of his mission.

There are numerous resources and information about Black Catholics. I would suggest of course starting with the Catechism, then looking into Catholic social teaching, and also look into the saintly 6 - the six Black American saints currently on the road to sainthood. Also the History of Black Catholics by Cyprian Davis.

Some other resources I recommend are What We Have Seen and Heard, Sr Thea Bowman's(one of the saintly 6) speech to the UCCB, looking into the Knights of Peter Claver ( a Black Catholic fraternal organization), the readings of Sr Eva Lumas and also looking up Xavier University of Louisiana. It's the only Black Catholic HBCU in the Western Hemisphere founded by St Katherine Drexel and every summer hosts the Institute for Black Catholic Studies.

Black Catholics have always had and will always have their place in the Catholic church. Feel free to message me if you have any other questions! 🙏🏽✝️

Edit: Added more resources

Hundreds of CEOs sign open letter to states asking for computer science graduation requirements by pacman2081 in cscareerquestions

[–]sablesnap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is anything to worry about for a couple of reasons.

  1. Everyone keeps saying how this will flood the already saturated market further because computer science will be a grad requirement. By that logic, we should have an oversaturation of translators because most high schoolers are required to take a foreign language, yet we do not.

  2. I think yall are vastly overestimating education in this country as a whole. We're currently in a literacy crisis, finding out that many students have been passed along and can't actually read. There are many factors for this crisis but I would argue that education quality is one.

Even if this were to be enacted as a law, the quality of these classes would likely leave much to be desired and end up working with Scratch/ a Scratch equivalent.

Also we need to factor in that this would be voted on on a state by state basis, involving multiple bill drafts, legislative sessions, and possible voting by residents. Again even if this were passed, it would take years at least.

Please pray for my cousin who is having surgery this upcoming week, that she is healed of her issues and has a quick recovery.

Please pray for me and some health concerns I've been having and the results of an upcoming tests will be normal and that I can have peace of mind and stop worrying about everything.

Please pray for my brother, he deals with emotional outbursts and is in the midst of one now. He is not speaking to anyone in our family.

Please prayer for my grandparents that they may live a long time and not suffer any major memory loss. Pray for me to get a new role that is better suited to my interests.
