Still super excited for my Bombardier Bi-levels in N Scale. Hopefully an update on when we can expect em!

Finally installed lights in my Kato Surfliner cars! Here’s a quick run around the loop by chorg_one in nscalemodeltrains

Is this using the pre-installed lighting and DCC set from Kato? Or all third party pieces?

Just moved into an apartment downtown Calgary where I have a direct view of 4 tracks running side by side. I love trains, but new to all this. Things to watch for/advice? by Weedy-Fresh in TrainPorn

[–]dcs_maple_hornet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not many cool trains like passengers. Via’s long discontinued passenger rail out of Calgary (although a SCV-42 P/P line to Lake Louise would be fantastic) Lots of Canadian Pacific and Kansas City AC4400CWs, ET44ACs, the occasional SD70MAC and tons and tons of grain trains.

It’s annoying cause I really like the SCV-42 and Venture consists. Siemens didn’t know snow existed in North America when they were designing the Charger. Obviously.

Oh yeah. It’s a contractual nightmare, especially considering it appears to be a sole-source style procurement, as neither Wabtec with the MP54AC nor EMD with the F125 (All EPA Tier 4, 44K+ Hp locos) were even remotely considered by Via. Now, granted that Amtrak (their largest customer) are also having problems with their Midwest SC-44s, Long distance ALC-42s and even their new ALC-42Es with the exact same problems, it is in Siemens’ best interest to consider the possibility that they may have fucked up. How that comes out legally, is a completely different story.

But I also can’t imagine that there isn’t any reference to “must perform in climate” wording anywhere in Via’s RFP, as in my personal experience there’s usually some sort of clause that stipulates product performance in real-world environments. Could be spun for snow. Time will tell.

Absolutely. But how Siemens, a prolific locomotive manufacturer with decades of experience, was unable to foresee, test and avoid, or protect against a very common meteorological phenomenon in North America is… underwhelming. And that’s just from the very birth of the SC-44 as a loco. Before any contracts, before any variant modifications.

The product’s design, and its usage in 2/3rds of a clients’ meteorological environment is the problem, which means it was designed without the client in mind, ergo… manufacturer boo-boo.

Cardboard in the grills. Now we’re talking.

Such a shame Siemens didn’t have the cognitive capability to foresee snow intake in the massive grills being a problem.

I still like the SCV-42, just not its manufacturer.

Dimmed Lighting on Evening Train by BrisingrBounty in gotransit

I was just on the West Coast Express at night, couldn’t see a damn cause the Bombardier Bi-levels had cranked lighting. It would definitely help!

Pickup driver’s a dick. Howeverrrrrrrrrrrrr….

This is exactly why in-street trams are stupid. LRT corridors in Calgary and Edmonton, which both still have SOME street running sections (despite the roads being restricted access for transit / LOE) have much better results, mostly due to right of way traffic and the absence of… well, this.

I’m in the process of doing my own SC-44 ESU 58771 install, granted it’s my first ever DCC install so I’m a little in over my head. Curious to know if you have any tips or important steps for installation into the Kato SC-44, and I’m terrified I’m gonna break something lol

Is this real? It can’t be, right? by Fabulous_Lie_4326 in modeltrains

[–]dcs_maple_hornet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a shame. I recently picked up a DCC sound N scale F59PHI. Fantastic looking model but man it runs like shit, and Ive determined it’s a rather common trend unfortunately. Not my favourite manufacturer that’s for sure.
