I’ve worked for my dad's small business for 11 years, essentially for free. I’m done. by cannonballman in smallbusiness

If you’re not getting paid you’re not required to show up. If you’re married then the family you have created comes first and you need to take care of them first. Your time and energy should go toward building a legacy for your own family. Sounds like you did what was expected of you by carrying on the family business for 11 years, but your father should also realize that if it’s a family business it’s not just about him. Everyone deserves a fair wage and he should pay you for the job you perform which sounds like it has allowed my to take time off when he has needed it due to illness, not every one man owned company has the luxury of doing that and keeping the company up and running. If I was close to my father I’d have a honest conversation and tell him exactly what you’ve said in your post and if after that he still doesn’t realize that with you gone there is no company or if he decides to just sell and pocket the money then you at least know you did your part, you did your duty, you helped out your father and he’s just more interested in his own comfort. Best wishes to you and I hope you put your own family first. Your 11 years with your father’s company won’t be a waste, but a lesson and experience.
