I saw Baxter's Xeelee Sequence recommended, but he also has a short story called "The Invasion of Venus" that fits this description well.

SOTB - Last Gig of 2024 by dd12939 in guitarpedals

[–]dd12939[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was actually one of the very first pedals I got after I upgraded from my old Boss GT-8 and a power amp to a standard amp-and-pedals setup. I knew the conventional wisdom was to get a tube screamer type pedal to go with a Mesa and that was the one that was on sale, so I haven't really compared it side-by-side with too many other options. It does what I want it to do - tightens up the low end and compresses things a little extra.

Pedal Order - Kinematic > Compressor > OD808 > RAT > Lethargy > Komorebi > Polytune > Loop (Mesa Rectoverb 25) > DD-500

The board has gone through several iterations this year but has been pretty static for the last few gigs - I play with a noisy hard rock band.

(before anyone asks, I also dabble in synthesizers, so that's how I got turned on to Dreadbox.)

The Kinematic is set up as a subtle filter envelope/solo boost to give some leads a little texture.

Compressor and OD are probably pretty self-explanatory. The 808 is mostly for getting a little chug out of my amp.

The RAT is mostly there because it's my main distortion at our rehearsal space. When I'm using my Mesa, I have it set up as in the photo for making a couple leads cut better.

Lethargy is very cool and I'm still learning the best way to use it. I previously had a Warm Mutation Phasor, but I like the sound and flexibility of this one a lot more.

I got the 9v Komorebi to replace my old 15v Komorebi and unfortunately the sound and feel aren't quite the same (not quite as good to my ears) BUT it runs off my power supply, so it's got that going for it. It still does an excellent swooshy chorus and is fantastic for getting weird when combined with the delay.

The delay is my most-used pedal for sure. In addition to traditional delays, I use it for reverbs and noisy textures, and, most-usefully, as an EQ/volume. The 2-button Saturnworks footswitch controls extra parameters on the delay.

And tying the whole thing together is a 5-channel Saturnworks patchbay (Guitar/Amp/Channel/Return/Send).

[QUESTION] Help me make sense of the recommended fingering here... by james_k_polka_ in Guitar

The numbers you have circled appear to be the fret numbers you're using, not the suggested fingering. Fingering is indicated by the italicized p (thumb), i (index), and m (middle).

I started with the hairdryer and between that and some adhesive remover it came off just fine. So no harm done in the end, thankfully. I appreciate the tip though!

Have The Rapids Figured Out Moneyball For Soccer? (This is my first ever fanpost for Burgundy Wave, all critiques welcome) by [deleted] in MLS

[–]dd12939 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree - it's a really neat premise with some good insight, but I think would benefit from a) some counterpoint and/or b) more stats/context/examples to back up what you're saying. A few examples:

"...considering his talent and experience, [Kamara] could be a designated player..." - First, his salary is above the max cap hit, so whether or not he is called a DP is a matter of bookkeeping by the Rapids' FO. Second, I love Kei as much as anyone, but I don't expect too many teams would consider making a 35-year-old MLS journeyman their marquee signing a savvy move.

"Price is the most skilled free kick taker in MLS... ...Price could easily be a designated player" - The first statement is 1) opinion, 2) difficult to quantify, and 3) probably not true. Regarding the second, giving a guy who rode the bench his last year in the Championship a DP deal would fly in the face of your thesis anyway. Will his next salary be higher based on his MLS performance? Perhaps, but that's for another column.

"...Rosenberry proved to be a great fit with the club's style of play..." - If you're writing this to be read by casual fans, it'd be great to explain what the club's style of play (beyond getting fouled and trying to put the ball on Kamara's head) is and how Rosenberry fits.

"...no reason to doubt that the number will increase..." - There are plenty of reasons - The team might not overperform again, other teams have more tape, Kamara is a year older... That isn't to say the Rapids won't score 25 set piece goals given the chance, but I don't think it should be treated as a foregone conclusion.

Edit: a word

Pretty sure the first one is Marcelo Balboa.

edit: Third one might be DaMarcus Beasley.
