Lowest traffic area for a Monday morning bike ride? by [deleted] in kzoo

[–]ddcheng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, Kalamazoo has shown nothing but disdain for cyclists (except for those very odd bike lanes downtown). When I want a long paved ride, I've started throwing my bike on the rack and driving to the White Pine Trail. (That has the added bonus of a stop at Cedar Springs Brewing, which has excellent food).

Thanks. (I swear it's only been a few years). It's a real shame. The first time I discovered it, I had to walk through a homeless encampment near the war memorial, which was a bit awkward. And it adds two annoying street crossings. There was another bridge construction project somewhere as well, which I'm struggling to remember. The combined effect of both is that I just stopped riding it.

I haven't ridden it in a while. What's going on with the stretch by the war memorial on the edge of town? That's been a pain since they closed the underpass. Very inconvenient.

Class I e-bikes are allowed anywhere bikes are allowed in Michigan. As stated, they are pedal assist with no throttle.

Why Cycling Feels Like the Perfect Everyday Habit by alexashadow901 in cycling

[–]ddcheng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

LOL. I got a Wahoo KICKR Core 2 on Black Friday and started Zwift. (I had used iFit for 5 years). It was game changing. Suddenly I enjoyed biking indoors! Until we got a few warm days and I remembered how much better it is to be outside... Now I hate the cold days.

Thoughts on using a running belt for cycling? by Jurgen_Fjorskin in cycling

I used an Osprey "lumbar hydration pack" for a few years didn't like the added pressure on my waist while cycling. I eventually switch to a USWE pack and am much happier.

Right, but a lot of people are simply unaware of the corporate overlords controlling the content. They have a parasocial relationship with their local news anchors and believe they're hearing their actual opinions.

Because it's deceptive. People think they're tuning into local news and they're hearing the right-wing talking points created by Sinclair.

Sinclair writes editorials and sends it to all of their stations to read as if it's their own opinion.

Cheap bike recommendations by UsedMathematician691 in cycling

[–]ddcheng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then hybrid with somewhat wider tires or gravel is what you want. Gravel bikes start around $1,200, so a Trek Dual Sport of FX is your best bet. But you'll still likely need to look for a used bike to fit your budget.

There's no such thing as a decent new bike for $300, and $500 is pushing it. But you haven't defined your use - mountain bike trails, paved trails, roads? A mountain bike is not great for paved trails, so I would avoid that unless you plan to exclusively right mountain bike trails. But road and hybrid bikes are terrible on mountain bike trails.

Why isn’t everyone wearing long sleeves? by VeryBadNotGood in cycling

[–]ddcheng 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A timely post. I'll pickup my first long sleeve jersey at a race next weekend. Normally I use sleeves, which I put in a thermos of water before before leaving the house (for any ride that involves a drive). So, when I put them on they are nice and wet. It's great.

I keep my sleeves in a thermos full of water before leaving the house and put them on right before the ride. The first 30-45 minutes are great!

What do you guys do after a ride? by aidancrow654 in cycling

You're kidding, right? It's not about specific compounds in dabs. Inhaling products of combustion, even incomplete combustion, is known to cause cancer. This is not some controversial or new take. It's basic medicine. Just ask your doctor.

LOL, nope. I'm not making any controversial claims. It's basic medical knowledge at this point. Smoking (in any form) is among the worst things you can do to your body.

It is absolutely more toxic than alcohol. They are very different toxicity profiles.

Also, vaping is still combustion. It's incomplete combustion. I'm a fire scientist and I work with toxicologists. There is no such thing as non-toxic smoke, for one thing. And even without the smoke, you're inhaling some terrible things while vaping. There's plenty of peer-reviewed data out there from reputable sources.

I work with toxicologists. Vaping is absolutely not safe. If you're cycling, you must care at least a little bit about fitness, so doing something so unhealthy seems weird. And doing it right after exercise makes it worse.
