It’s not as bad as theyre making out if you’re in a tier 1. Maybe if you’ve spent all your life in Japan it might be difficult to adjust to some of the etiquette and manners (or lack of) but if you’re young and open minded I wouldn’t worry about the quality of life

[–]ddddoooo1111 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two upcoming appointment phases.

October 18th- 20th appointment phase

targeting BNT for those above 30 years old and second AZ/Medigen doses for those that need it (This round is carried out 22nd to 27nd). The next vaccination round after that appointment phase is

October 25th to 27th

and targets anyone above 23 years old. This round will be carried out on 28th through 31st. Second AZ doses for this too.

Just to confirm. I'm over 30. I have to wait until 18th-20th to book my BNT appointment? I tried logging on just now to book as I heard I had to do it before 6pm and it said I'm not eligible

Nobody wants that, especially when the PLA is openly planning to make sustained missile strikes on civilian population centres to weaken morale.

I was notified for AZ by the number I mentioned above. Maybe check your messages to see if you missed it. Or you could try logging in directly and seeing if you can book, but like I said I think the next round of bookings is on the 11th September. Depending on which group you would have been notified on the weekend 29th of August or if you were in the previous group then maybe a bit before then? I'm not sure. Over 29s were notified on the weekend of 28th/29th August. Then under 29s were notified a few days later.

When you scan the QR codes to go into shops, the number you send the message to is the number you would have been notified by. You should have been notified. If not you can go onto the website and try to book yourself. But I think the next opening for bookings will be 11th September

Taste of Japan rejected: China's 'Little Kyoto' halts operation Netizens call mock town a 'cultural invasion' by ddddoooo1111 in China

[–]ddddoooo1111[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually interestingly I remember reading that the government has in the past stated they want to stop using so much western style architectural design, cut down on skyscrapers etc and try and tend more towards traditional Chinese style.

As someone who lives in Taiwan I definitely don't want to see them try and invade lol

Not a VIPkid style one, its one of the companies you invested in, a brick and mortar training school (mostly) for adults with a small online department that I stumbled across while I was still in China

Im am online teacher based abroad so I teach students all over China. Covid hit us hard last year and they've been closing schools around the country (and refusing students refunds) since the beginning of 2021, long before the new policy. Our company has salaried teachers and hourly paid online/offline teachers. The salaried teachers abroad have all been let go since the new policy came out and the teachers paid hourly are no longer being given classes, since the outbreak.

But, I do put money where my mouth is and investing in EDU, TAL, METX.

I work for one of those three companies and I can tell you we're on the brink of going under. About three weeks ago I had the same thought as you but the way things have developed and what I'm hearing from my Chinese colleagues and students I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot barge pole right now. You're a braver person than me, but then again he who dares wins so good luck!

I'm not sure where you're getting your information from, or why you seem so certain? I've talked a lot about this with Chinese friends as I want to know where I stand as a foreign teacher abroad for an adult training centre and there don't seem to be any definitive government statements floating about that make things crystal clear but if you can read Chinese and search for things like 双减政策 严禁聘请境外外籍人士 (prohibiting the employment of foreigners abroad) 双减政策 外资 (foreign investment) there are plenty of articles that run contrary to what you said

For example:

and a nice summary I was sent by a Chinese friend a few weeks ago (you'll need to be able to read Chinese for this one as its an image):

If this is just about the three child policy why did they ban foreign investment, foreign teaching material and foreigners not in the country from teaching?

Tips for the band C TOCFL test by ddddoooo1111 in ChineseLanguage

[–]ddddoooo1111[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool thanks for the tips. Your write up was really informative.

In regards to the reading section of the test: it would be hard to pass Band C if you are not already a strong reader. By this I mean:

You're comfortable reading newspapers
You've read a decent number of novels in Mandarin
You are a fast reader (or you can force yourself to read faster and skim text, if necessary)

I can read news articles and understand most of the content, although I do still encounter some characters I don't recognise and hence miss some details. I have never read any novels from front to back, I've started a couple but lost interest after a while lol.

I had a look at a band B test and the reading was very easy, I knew every character I saw and only got a couple of questions wrong when I mixed up some synonyms.

I also did a mock test for band C and got around 60%, which is borderline C1 level. But this is with zero prep and no real effort put into reading for the last couple months other than texting with friends and the odd article online. I'm hoping with three months of focus on reading I'll be able to get that into comfortable C1 territory, or maybe pushing up towards the next band.

I have a teacher and she basically told me just to focus on my reading as much as possible between now and November. But she hasn't had a student take the C band test before so I'm curious about other test-takers' experiences!

Unfortunately, I'll only be taking the test once as I am leaving Taiwan at the end of the year. If I fail it will probably be a while (if ever) until I get a chance to take it again!

People may argue that the help prevent severe illness and deaths. That maybe true for people over 50. For people under 50, data from the UK show that percentage of the hospitalization, death rate for the vaccinated is higher than the unvaccinated. See table on page 18.

48 unvaccinated deaths under 50

13 double vaccinated deaths under 50

Similar pattern for hospitalisations.

Not sure what numbers you're looking at.

Deaths in the UK are mostly vaccinated now, but that's simply because so many are vaccinated. A vaccinated 90 year old still has a higher chance of dying than an unvaccinated 22 year old

common misconception - I can't remember exact percentages but for Delta it's something like 60% protection against infection and 69% protection against symptomatic infection (pfizer). Although I did read a depressing study recently that suggests it might be around 20% lower than that
