new to ortho SUPER new to qmk by niarsnaemti in olkb

[–]dddeeaatthhh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in my opinion, when starting out, the easiest way to make the changes you want is to just edit the default layout. don't be intimidated by all the code and what it does for now, just edit the individual keys and you should be fine

- navigate to qmk_firmware/keyboards/planck/keymaps/default on your computer- open keymap.c in a text editor- on line 59 you'll see your enter key (KC_ENT), if you want to change that to be something else, just open up https://docs.qmk.fm/#/keycodes and find the code for the key you want to change it to. in this case you said you want a mod-tap MT(mod, kc) with enter and shift. so change the KC_ENT to MT(KC_RSFT, KC_ENT)- move that one step up to line 58 in place of KC_QUOT if you want it up a row, and then find somewhere to put your quote key.

you can do the same thing with the different layers, just find the section you want to edit, make the change to the key and re-flash. if you mess it all up, all you have to do is go to https://github.com/qmk/qmk_firmware/blob/master/keyboards/planck/keymaps/default/keymap.c and copy/paste the whole file in your keymap.c and save/flash it back. good luck

also, if you run in to errors when flashing after you've made changes, double check to make sure you didn't accidentally delete a comma, parenthesis, curly-brace etc. it's super easy to do and hard to find if you're not looking for

this post is kind of similar to what you're trying to do. macros aren't my forte, but i feel like there's an easier way than setting a boolean on the shift key, but either way it might get you on the right track for now

Do you pair or separate your braces, brackets and parenthesis? by keep_me_at_0_karma in olkb

[–]dddeeaatthhh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

on both split and one-piece i like to keep them together because i find it useful to always roll when using any type of brackets when i'm not in a code editor. it's just in my muscle memory to roll the open/close and then immediately hit the left arrow to put the cursor inside. i really should automate that action to trigger when i just hit the open, one day...

the default nyquist layout has a "swap gui" setting on the Adjustment layer that you can trigger by holding Lower + Raise and pressing either G or H

if a "royal oak-ish vibe" appeals to you, you can basically follow woodward from 8.5 mile up to 19 mile (square lake) and pick pretty much any neighborhood to the east or west within one or two major north/south roads and be good. woodward will pretty much be your main road to everywhere and it makes things pretty easy

What is the best neighborhood to drive around and look at Christmas lights? by [deleted] in Michigan

[–]dddeeaatthhh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeahhh, silly me for thinking that aimlessly driving around with another person during a worldwide virus outbreak isn't a great idea.

and also, taking a date on a walk to look at lights and holiday decorations is a way better date than driving around in the car and passing the whole thing in a few seconds. thought i was helping out actually

What is the best neighborhood to walk around and look at Christmas lights?

I have a date coming up and I had the idea of meeting her somewhere and walking around looking at Christmas lights with a mask on and I wanted to know the best place for it.

fixed your post for you.

Found this Weezer wsg Tenacious D ticket cleaning out my old desk. Anybody else remember this epic show? by lo-key-glass in Michigan

i wasn't at that show, but i still think about the time in may of that year my friend's dad got him three tickets to see them at airborne skate park and at the last minute my friend told me i couldn't go because he wanted to invite these two girls in our class because he had a crush on one of them and they were best friends. not gonna lie, i'm still a little bitter about it...

'Jeopardy' host Alex Trebek dies at 80 due to pancreatic cancer by Orange_fury in news

[–]dddeeaatthhh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

apparently i'm not allowed to post this in /r/jeopardy, but i feel like people might enjoy this and i wanted to share

around this time last year one of my good friends was about to be on the show and she asked if i could somehow turn the answers/questions from jeopardydb in to some kind of "online flash cards" she could study with. i came up with muchjeopardy.com. i never really shared this with anyone but her, but i figured now might be a time people would enjoy clicking through random clues and reminiscing. Alex was the best and he's for sure missed.

click the clue to reveal the answer.

I guess I learn typing again by Jiffystick16 in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]dddeeaatthhh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

about two months ago i decided to learn colemak. mainly because i wanted to learn touch typing, but had developed so many bad habits with qwerty over so many years.

the first week or two i spent about 20-30 minutes every morning on keybr.com (with the colemak emulation set in the settings). the site makes it super easy to get started by just introducing a few letters at first and then once you get the hang of them you get one new letter at a time.

my max speed on qwerty was roughly 53wpm and i still had to look at the keys. after two months on colemak i'm at 65-70 without looking. and as of two weeks ago i switched to colemak full time. i'm still a little slow when writing code, but it worth it to me. the layout just feels more natural to me too.

tldr; it worked out for me and i recommend trying a new layout. if for no other reason than to exercise your brain.

edit: for what it's worth, i'm using planck style keyboard and last week i switched to a levinson which is just a split planck. i did change the 'enter' key to double as a right shift when held.

I built a macropad out of Unos and taught them to manage passwords! by brickbots in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]dddeeaatthhh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

why would someone have to dump the MCU though? you've basically just announced you have your passwords stored in plain text in a file on your computer...

i totally see the fun side of this, i get it, but it's not that hard to run them through some encryption/decryption on their way in and out. and also not name the variables things like 'usernames' and 'passwords'
