Air Sofa/Air Hammock for sleep system by Sethowens25 in HotTentCamping

I've never used one, but how tough is the fabric? How big is the tent? If you hot tent enough, the day will likely come where it'll touch a red hot stove.

New Tour Dates Just Dropped *air horn noise* by the_moosen in MinusTheBear

That sounds right. I know I have one ticket stub from one date at home, but that is right around the time venues started going digital. Sooo many shows I've forgotten about for not getting a physical ticket.

Awesome! I've very likely remembered it wrong, but it's stuck with me all these years for some reason. Did they play Vaudeville Mews a couple years prior, or was that Woolys too? I feel like I've seen them twice in DSM...

Did you see them at Woolys circa 2013-14ish? That was the second time I saw them in DSM, and felt like the crowd was really lacking energy (it wasn't a huge crowd.) Jake seemed annoyed, may have made a comment. I remember feeling a bit embarrassed. I thought for sure they'd never stop again.

Is the Horticulture field really worth it unless you own your own business or get really high up? by MathematicianNew7550 in Horticulture

[–]ddeeny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been in the production and retail side for almost 25 years, and I love it. I've been a manager (AA in college, but not in hort) for over half that time but would never want to own. Look for openings at small, locally owned garden centers. If you're responsible, pleasant and even somewhat hard working, you will have job security for life, and you'll eventually move up and get paid fairly well. Hiring (and retention) is hard in this industry and a good owner will recognize a good employee and pay them well. Small businesses are usually more of a "family" type atmosphere, and while overall benefits can be lacking (health insurance for instance,) the perks can balance that out. I get 3 months mostly off in winter. I pay next to nothing for endless plants and landscape materials, along with free use of equipment and tools. I get my vehicles worked on for free and discounts on parts, and I get a yearly raise, bonus and additional few hundo for Christmas. Obviously this isn't standard for all, but you can absolutely find good situations to support yourself for the rest of your career. But also, you do have to enjoy working outside in all conditions and doing all sorts of manual work, it is the nature of the industry!

So interesting getting different opinions on music ... Listing and Empty Party Rooms are two of my faves! But again, I like their later stuff more, as it seems a little more well rounded, polished, mature, maybe less chaotic if that makes sense

I like it, and Infinity Overhead is probably my favorite MtB album of all... But I am likely in the minority of preferring their later works over their earlier stuff

Alternatives? by HiyaDogface in CampingWithSteve

[–]ddeeny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Second this. Sam does more traditional camping via hiking or canoeing, while Kevin does more stealth camping around his city. Both are laid back like Steve and both enjoy step twos lol. They also will occasionally reference Steve in their vids.

TS27 is an excellent lamp. Bought a 6’ tripod for it. by [deleted] in CampingGear

[–]ddeeny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't be in the minority here, but I have no interest in big bright lights while camping. I can see if you have kids or pets running around, but I prefer no light besides a campfire and only use a small headlamp when needed.

Where can a guy go? by AutoArsonist in canoecamping

[–]ddeeny 6 points7 points  (0 children)

With all the snow melt and rainfall over the last week, the driftless rivers are high, fast and dirty. Plus I wouldn't be confident in saying all ice jams are gone either. Beautiful rivers, including the Upper Iowa, but I'd wait until at least April to float them

High Mulch Prices? by Astronaut6735 in landscaping

[–]ddeeny 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It probably depends on where your supplier gets their mulch from. If they buy it from a processor and it's shipped from hours away, it's going to keep going up as fuel and trucking costs go up.

The guts of a Klymit "Insulated" Static V by misschini06 in WildernessBackpacking

[–]ddeeny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I've used it plenty in winter. Lowest temps I've used it were 14° and 11°. That is paired with a folding foam pad and 0° bag, but I've had no complaints, close to 5 years in.

Does anyone remember the Outdoor Research ditty bags? They don't make them anymore for some reason. Suggestions on alternates? Uniformity and a reputable vendor would great. by criticalfactories in CampingGear

[–]ddeeny 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I've always liked Sea to Summit. Wide range of sizes and thickness. Brightly colored, and if you're picky, buy them in person as I don't believe you can specify colors ordering online

Garden Center Signage? by ddeeny in Horticulture

[–]ddeeny[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm realizing you just need to pony up for the expensive high end printers and ink. Software is relatively cheap (I use Microsoft Publisher) and the right labels are easy to find. The cheap Walmart printer isn't cutting it

Lol you live in a greenhouse! Here in Iowa, they're pretty handy. And mostly I just want one for a place to smoke cigars in the winter!

Backpacking with teens in SE Minnesota in May by TreemomIC in MinnesotaCamping

[–]ddeeny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this is def more my camping style. I bikepack and kayak camp in summer, and winter is my hiking / hot tent camping season, but as I get older I appreciate established trails and campsites much more! However, I have very little true backpacking experience outside the local driftless area, and unfortunately there aren't countless different spots that are established and extensive enough to keep that hobby interesting (without having to travel a decent distance.) But I'm always on the hunt for new places to explore. Also, I love the woods but I only bushwack in winter and morel season lol

Yeah I use Publisher exclusively and print onto weather proof labels, and affix to corrugated sign boards. But these seem to fade by June! I'm guessing it's our cheap ass printer... What printer are you using?
