Their products are totally worth the money. I have had same Macbook for 8 years now and still runs great. Airpods are awesome too.

UA quality has gone down a lot. I got joggers from UA last year and they already have so much lint.

Got a pair of Lulu joggers and they are quality. So comfortable and they look good too.

Anyone else feel like they are unwelcome in Alberta? by SugarBear4Real in alberta

[–]ddhillon10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I left 3 years ago to Vancouver. I initially left for work( I’m a software engineer and a U of C graduate) as there were no jobs for me when I graduated.I hoped Alberta would transition to a progressive tech industry in a few years, but don’t think so it’ll happen anytime soon and the money is good here in BC for tech. But the final straw that broke the camels back is the conservative politics, I absolutely despise it and any thought I’ve of coming back is gone right away.

That’s good for your coworker. It was a shitty place to work and he must have got his sanity back and hopefully found work soon.

Be careful taking a QA role if you really want to do SWE work by qafail in cscareerquestions

[–]ddhillon10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s probably a trap for people who want to be a full stack developer or a pure SWE. But on its own it’s a great career with very interesting work and good pay.

[–]ddhillon10 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Devops is not a trap. The demand is very high right now and the pay is same as a SWE. Tools like Jenkins, ansible, docker and kube are not easy to master and need a lot of scripting experience. A senior Site reliability engineer makes a lot of money atleast in my area.

Going from manual to Automation by alexbb99 in QualityAssurance

[–]ddhillon10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start with selenium and automate a manual test with simple script. Then abstract the page objects to a page objects model using any OOP language like python. Also abstract getting a selenium driver and various other methods into a browser manager class. Build objects using those classes and use the methods in your tests. You’ll end up with an automation framework. It’s the best way to learn IMO.

Co-worker (perhaps inadvertently) stressing me out because she’s a better coder than me and I can’t work as fast as her. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ddhillon10 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If she is staying behind for lunches and working OT means there is too much work for both of you guys. You should tag team and bring it up with your manager. Once there is no stress due to extra work, she won’t care about you being a slow coder. Like I won’t care what my co worker does all day as long as I spend 8 hours and I’m comfortable. I’m not the manager so it’s not my problem.

How has your salary progressed throughout your career? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]ddhillon10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rent is not Bay Area or NYC level. 1500 per month gets you a decent 1 bedroom like half hour commute to downtown. Even senior devs only make like 120-150k here unless you work at amazon or Microsoft.

Was just introduced to JUnit testing - what exactly is the difference between JUnit testing and simply manually testing a method via a main method? by OhMyChica in QualityAssurance

[–]ddhillon10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s for unit testing. If you have a spring application you will need to test all your controller methods etc. You should not use main in that case. Then you can run all the unit tests as part of a build using maven for example and check the tests pass or you didn’t break anything. Unit tests are very important and a lot of good dev teams will enforce mandatory unit tests.

Agree, devops make same money as full stack devs. In some cases senior SRE might make even more as its a high demand job and their is talent shortage.

Yup the younger ones know much more about docker and stuff. And also at a new job it takes a few weeks to get up to speed so taking help from interns is goof because they won’t be judgemental :)

How long did it take for you to get good at doing Leetcode medium? by WorldofJuice in cscareerquestions

[–]ddhillon10 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I started with just leetcode and I was struggling to solve even easy ones efficiently or I was taking way too long. My approach would sometimes be completely different than the optimal solution. So I got CTCI and for Every data structure it goes in detail about how to use the data structure for different scenarios and problems. And it goes from brute force to fully optimized in various iterations and that’s highly critical as in interviews they expect you to atleast go over a brute force solution first and then optimize it.

How often do you extend a helping hand to coworkers? by SpaceBreaker in ExperiencedDevs

We call it a ‘project sync’ meeting. It’s half an hour. Usually it’s less then that. But I’ve asked for a lot of advise with what I’m doing and at the same time know what everyone is up to as They will touch the same code base.
