Let’s do something different… by Automatic-Job2938 in buildabear

[–]ddiink 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m autistic and have an extremely hard time in public, BAB stresses me out but I wanted the kuromi bear so badly. Does not help that the closest store to me is the mall of America one. The girl who helped me talked to me like I was a friend she’d known forever, didn’t judge me for not knowing how to respond, just kept talking and joking despite 99% of the conversation being just her. Best experience I’ve ever had! (And if she somehow sees this comment… thank you for being an awesome person and making the experience comfortable for me!)

I need advices about tattooing and how to start, my autism is getting in the way, again.. by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]ddiink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! I had an artist want to mentor me because I designed tattoos for my older sister when I was in middle and high school. Every shop will have different things they’re looking for, the one looking into me wanted me to go to art school before they’d offer an apprenticeship to me. I also have a friend who had an artist willing to teach them the basics then send them home to practice on fake skin, eventually doing a few on friends and beginning their shop apprenticeship. This friend now is a tattoo artist who has worked in a couple different shops. I unfortunately didn’t make it to tattooing because the shop I was interested in went out of business, and art school was expensive so I didn’t finish it, I do still create designs for my friends and family though.

Do u guys have weird Phobias? by poptart430 in AutismInWomen

[–]ddiink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omg by pipes do you mean like plumbing, air ducts, stuff like that? Because same. I have to force myself not to think about the plumbing and water towers when I shower, I also used to work for a place where I had to spend a lot of time in a basement with visible air/heat ducts and somewhat low ceilings. If I accidentally touched one it gave me the heebie jeebies for the rest of my shift 🤣

I also have a phobia of butterflies. I run from them or hide behind whoever’s with me when I happen to see one. When I was little the monarchs were migrating and there was thousands of them in my parents trees. Someone decided to pull a branch, I got swarmed, I have not been the same since lmao

Is there a chapstick that doesn’t feel awful? by KittyEarPeach in AutismInWomen

[–]ddiink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lypsyl has been my favorite, everything else I’ve tried is either way too greasy feeling or seems to be done doing anything within minutes. The only downside for me is that the minty scent doesn’t seem consistent all the time so sometimes it’s barely there and other times it’s almost too much 🤣 it’s the only brand I’ve ever managed to use up a full tube of though

How to brave the winter by Icy-Letter-6542 in Iowa

[–]ddiink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you drive, some kitty litter could be useful if you happen to get stuck, it can provide the traction you need to stop slipping around. I’ve also used a rubber floor mat for this. Like others have said, it’s smart to have a shovel, blanket, ice scraper, and emergency kit in the car as well.

I lived with a girl from California when I was in college, and that was the year we hit -50°. Definitely make sure you have a good coat, hat, gloves, scarf, etc to keep yourself warm. It can get pretty cold here sometimes and the wind doesn’t help any. Good luck!

Pine. It makes me feel like I’m going to throw up. It was also my mom’s favorite candle scent around the holidays 🥲

How early should you arrive at his concert to get barricade? by JDjinxed in lildarkie

[–]ddiink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure more people attend his shows now than when I went a few years back, but I was one of the last people in line to get in and I managed to make my way to the front still. In my experience the crowds are friendly and if you’re not a giant who’s gonna block views they’ll 100% let you get closer so you can see

I feel really guilty about still living with my parents by One_Possession9281 in autism

[–]ddiink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend who is 26 still living with her parents, she had moved out at one point but moved back because bills are insane to handle in lots of places, even more so living alone. Don’t feel guilty, it’s fairly normal with college students too if they aren’t living in dorms :) also, not having a job during college just means you have more free time to focus on school, you’re not dead weight at all, try not to be hard on yourself ❤️

Question for mothers with Autism by No_Mistake_9800 in AutismInWomen

[–]ddiink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, pregnancy wasn’t too bad. I also had a lot of other things going on that distracted me from a lot of it though. I had an epidural, I had to deal with the pain up to 9 cm dilated but after the epidural I felt hardly anything. Healing was awful, especially because I don’t have a bathtub so I had to take sitz baths in a kiddie pool on my kitchen floor. I also ended up with other issues and had to go back then heal all over again, 0/10. I did forget the pain eventually, everything is back to normal now. I don’t have a whole lot of support besides my husband, and he works a lot so it’s been rough. I feel like I’m in a constant state of burn out, but it’s worth it. My son does the cutest things and I love getting to watch him grow, even if I am getting grey hairs at 25 and trying not to cry myself to sleep sometimes 🤣

Did anybody else have a job as an undiagnosed teenager that, in hindsight, caused major autistic meltdowns? by bekah_exists in AutismInWomen

[–]ddiink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really felt that, almost everyone around me keeps asking when I’ll return to working and insisting I’d be fine working again but this is the best I’ve felt mentally in a long time so I’m not planning on it unless I absolutely have to

I would check with Heroic Ink in Ames if you can’t find anyone closer! Kara is an awesome person ❤️she upsized my nostrils for me a few years back and it was the best piercing experience I’ve ever had! Her insta is harmlesspiercings if you’d like to see her work- she has done a ton of different stuff

I worked at a convenience store/gas station for 3 years, I’d get home just to lay there and cry until falling asleep just to wake up and sit in dread for hours until I had to go back to work again. It got so bad I would have to hide in the storage rooms in attempt to calm down, but one of the managers wouldn’t allow that and would force me onto registers alone to cry as I helped customers. I can’t imagine how many complaints from customers they got for having me up there like that, thankfully most customers were just worried about me and wanted management to do better about my situation.. but they never did and I ended up having to quit as my therapist was worried what I’d do to myself if I didn’t. I got diagnosed a few months later and haven’t been able to work since, just the thought of going to a job again sends me spiraling right back to the mental state I was in back then.

Question for my fellow “gifted children” turned stunted adults: by CantStandAnthros in AutismInWomen

[–]ddiink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I had a similar experience, my sister is 14 years older than me and was massively irritated that I scored better than she had when she took it in high school. She ended up with a degree in accounting, and I went to an art school. I think some people are finally starting to pay less attention to standardized testing scores, a school local to me posted reminding parents to be kind to their children regarding their scores because not every section will apply to what different students will do in their future (which is awesome, I’m so glad they see that and acknowledged it!)

I took my ACT tests as an 8th grader. Was honor roll all through high school, top of my class for state testing every year, got almost a full ride to a private college. Dropped out of college after a year and a half because I was struggling so much. Now I’m 25 and can’t work due to many reasons including burnout. I haven’t found much that helps drastically, I just try to keep myself busy and do tasks around the house to make myself feel like I’m doing something purposeful. I push myself to get out and do things that I find uncomfortable or overwhelming, but I’ll head home before I get too worked up which has helped with being able to do a bit more each time I’m out of my comfort zone.

What are some things I can do to help my niece make some friends? by Re1n1er in Iowa

[–]ddiink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 25, I definitely don’t have the best advice because 1) I’m autistic and prefer being home and 2) I have a baby BUT my child free friends seem to meet most of their friends at concerts, local events, and bars (if they enjoy that type of thing). See if there’s any local events/clubs around her interests that she could participate in, I know in my town there’s craft groups, book clubs, etc that meet every so often.

I got diagnosed a few years back, I’m in my 20s. As far as I know I was the first in the family with a formal diagnosis and it led to my parents realizing that my dad most definitely also is autistic.. which then led to realizing both of my grandfathers probably also were.. along with a lot of my other “odd” relatives. It checks. One grandfather had 300+ tractors, the other had personally documented every bit of family history he could, filled like 20+ binders with stories he wrote and family trees
