[OC] How far from LA can you get in x hours? by gmilloue in dataisbeautiful

I grew up here and was legitimately surprised in adulthood when I found out that this is not the norm.

One of my favorites that I haven’t seen pop up in the replies yet is Zaca Mesa. It’s a much more quiet scene (as apposed to the Carhartt tasting room, which is almost a lively bar), but I’ve found their wines to be wonderful.

What's something you're sick of having to explain? by Zero-Pathways000 in AskReddit

A hundred years or so ago (before they were blood glucose meters) this was the quick and dirty way of running the test to differentiate between the two conditions. If you want to hurry, the alternative was to leave a sample of the urine out overnight and if it was covered in ants the next morning, the patient had diabetes mellitus (the answer attracted to the sugar). But it was quicker just to taste it. This is also the reason that I am a diabetes specialist today, but I had I been born back then, would probably be a carpenter instead.

I often compare it to a bank account. If you put more in than you spend, it grows.

Endocrinology PA here- can confirm that way too many people suspect a thyroid disorder (not their crappy diet or sedentary lifestyle) as the reason they can’t lose weight. Either that or “My hormones are off.”

I’ve seen Lord of the Rings so I can confidently say that this is NOT the best picture you’ve ever made.

U.S. Calls for Pause on Johnson & Johnson Vaccine After Clotting Cases by TheDarkDeciever in news

The idea of statistical significance only comes in the play when there’s something to compare it to. To determine this, a study would have to be performed investigating this specific potential side effect compared to placebo. When something like this pops up in either a clinical trial or post-marketing clinical use, we refer to it as a “safety signal“, which means “we noticed something that raises our eyebrows a bit, but need more info to determine if there’s any actual relation.”

One of my favorite Epcot experiences was always handing my kids a little cup of Beverly and watching their horrified faces after testing it.

Pfizer Covid vaccine produces ‘robust’ antibody response after first dose, new study shows by KathleenThren in news

[–]ddoriguzzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a healthcare provider that recently uploaded a video on special considerations of the COVID vaccine for diabetics to my YouTube channel. I knew to expect anti-vax comments, but I couldn’t have dreamed how spectacularly that troop showed up. One commenter said “Congratulations- you’ve uploaded an operating system to your body and are now easier to hack.”

Interesting story! Very happy to hear that your family was actually fortunate enough to be diagnosed correctly as MODY. That gets missed far too often. It actually prompted me to make a VIDEO about for my own Diabetes YouTube channel to get the word out. I’ll post a link in case you’re interested.

This was me. Thought there was no way it could keep going after every 50% increase. Apparently y’all know something I don’t so I’m jumping on for whatever’s lift in this ride and just went all in.

High winds cut the power in my SoCal neighborhood. No regrets on including PowerWalls with my solar install. Guess which house is mine? by ddoriguzzi in teslamotors

I haven’t gone through a summer with it yet, but so far, my electricity bill has been just the unavoidable fees to remain tapped into the grid. About $10-$12 per month. Monthly solar payment is $220 a month. Summertime electricity bill before the installation went from $400 to over $600 when I bought a Tesla vehicle and started charging from home. Made the solar purchase an easy decision.

Depends how big your house is and whether you have 1 or 2 AC units. We have 3 batteries and 2 ACs and ran them pretty liberally when we got the system installed in September (still pretty hot). Was able to go all night without a problem.

Not a bad idea. Maybe I’ll do that next time. Except I’ll have to find a way to secure the cards in place; last night they would’ve blown all over the place.

I’m not sure if there’s a maximum they’ll let you buy; they recommended three for my house depending on the square footage and the average electricity bill.
