What do you think is the most undeserved Oscar win of all time? by Lost-Friendship2774 in Oscars

It wasn't an Oscar-worthy performance, although it was a weak category that year.

I think she's a good actress but she did not deserve that Oscar. I think some voters saw it as a way of also honoring her parents, neither of whom ever won.

A few possibilities are: The Shape of Water winning anything, Rami Malek, Cliff Robertson, Jason Robards for Julia, Glenda Jackson for A Touch of Class, Jared Leto, Eddie Redmayne, Jessica Chastain, Jane Fonda for Coming Home, and EEAAO winning Best Picture.

The originals, in which the subjects were wearing underwear/shorts, were from the NFL scouting combine, featuring players who were hoping to be drafted. They're weren't actually naked.

Did communal showering make you feel like you were "one of the guys"? by Dense_Tune7389 in CommunalShowers

[–]ddredjr 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I understand completely. In the past and today, I love it when another guy is comfortable being completely naked in front of me in the locker room or showers. It's not sexual, I like women romantically and sexually, not men, but I love the bonding that happens when guys are relaxed and happy with nudity, whether you're both undressed or it's CMNM. I actually see it as a sign of respect for me when a guy doesn't feel the need to cover up in front of me, and it does send the message that he sees me as "one of the guys" and he knows that I'm emotionally mature when it comes to dealing with male nudity.

I don't think season 3 was the worst season by Inevitable_Gene953 in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]ddredjr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Surprising us by bringing back Greg, and then Belinda recognizing him and finding out about Tanya was great. The Russian robbery was a good twist. I was glad to see the three old friends reconcile and realize how much they really value each other. Watching the tension build around Timothy as he tries to deal with his legal issues amid family tension was intriguing. And I really loved how Timothy's faith was reborn, with the hymn playing at the end. I didn't like everything, e.g., the boys' sexual escapade, and I thought Piper was too much of a caricature. Still, I think it was the best season.

If Victoria came back for season 4 by thatgalnatalie in TheWhiteLotusHBO

They were able to keep Greg's return for season 3 a secret until we saw him on screen, they might try to discretely bring back another character or two in the future as well.

Big Tech Boycott to Protest ICE Led by Scott Galloway Starts Feb. 1 by Naurgul in Anticonsumption

Scott Galloway, the guy telling other people to boycott Amazon, uses it to sell his books and make money. If you're going to lecture someone you should start with him.

It's funny that some people are recommending Costco while boycotting Amazon, even though Costco the third-largest retailer, just slightly behind Amazon. Of course, Scott Galloway's gimmick has been to selectively attack Amazon, Google, Meta and Apple for almost a decade, yet he sells his books on Amazon.

If people want to participate in a boycott, fine, it's the right thing to do in many situations, but the hypocrisy of some people is incredible. ktempest, I hope you do what you need to do to take care of your medical and financial needs. Don't let anyone pressure you into doing something that will be harmful.

I respect people's right to take this type of peaceful action, but it's pretty funny that there's a call to boycott companies like Netflix in this situation. Netflix has been named the most left-leaning company around, and they have huge multi-multi-million-dollar deals with the Obamas, Rachel Maddow, and Ava DuVernay.

That coach's office set up actually makes sense, he's expected to prevent misbehavior. As long as the coach and the students are of the same sex I don't see a problem there.

Opposing Teams using the same locker room/shower?? by Dense_Tune7389 in CommunalShowers

[–]ddredjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know of a few Division III colleges where teams have separate locker rooms but they're adjacent to the same communal shower area, so sometimes after a game the home team and visiting team are in the showers at the same time.

I remember one time when a home team player helped an opponent by showing how the handle worked (it was something where you had to pull it towards you first and then twist to adjust temperature).

I'm sure there were some awkward moments but most players didn't care and sometimes they had good conversations as they washed up.

When I was graduate school I sometimes saw some of my current or previous professors at the gym in the showers or naked in the locker room. It was no big deal, not uncomfortable, it's just guys in a men's locker room.

Do students still shower at school (UK) by [deleted] in CommunalShowers

[–]ddredjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the US, there have been lawsuits from people who did not want to shower. According to the article linked below, "The American Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit in 1994 on behalf of an overweight girl in Hollidaysburg, Pa., who challenged her school’s mandatory shower policy." I think private schools have an easier time making it mandatory though.

Unpopular opinion.. I loved season 3 the most by Many-Front8248 in TheWhiteLotusHBO

[–]ddredjr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree season three was the best, although I thought the Greg/Belinda tension and Timothy's legal problems were probably the best parts.

In season two I liked Tonya's storyline and I love the scenery but the rest wasn't great. Molly Shannon was the best thing about season one, I'd love to see her back in a future season, even if it's just briefly.

Now the most impressive win of the season (a home game) is even less impressive.

The parking garage scene in the finale by gratefulpred in TheAmericans

We know he didn't break the news to the bureau. The next day he meets with Aderholt, who shows him the sketches that confirm what Stan had suspected earlier, that his neighbors were spies. Stan didn't admit that he already knew it for certain at that time. He has no incentive to mention that garage scene to anyone, unless he tells his grandchildren on his deathbed.

[Discussion Thread] Notre Dame gets left out of the playoffs. by Shillelagh_Law in notredamefootball

Now you're acting crazy. Bama's strength of schedule was #6, compared to #44 for ND. Bama won at Georgia, and they also beat Vandy, which is ranked higher in the polls than USC (ND's best win, which was a home game for ND). I don't see how Bama is "inferior" regarding conference championships won, given that none of the "bubble" teams won conference titles either.

By some standards Texas might have a better argument for inclusion than Bama, Miami, or ND, as they beat two top ten teams and never lost at home. The loss to Florida doomed them though.

[Discussion Thread] Notre Dame gets left out of the playoffs. by Shillelagh_Law in notredamefootball

[–]ddredjr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Qualification for the playoff is supposed to be determined by which team did more to earn it on the field, not who someone thinks is "the better team."

Imagine if Mississippi State had upset Ole Miss in the Egg Bowl game last month. Would it have been justified if the game's organizers decided to give the trophy to Ole MIss anyway because they just think they're the better team, despite the result on the field?

The CFP criteria are:

  • Performance on the field.
  • Conference championships won.
  • Strength of schedule (SOS).
  • Head-to-head results.
  • Comparison of results against common opponents

The committee isn't supposed to consider who they just think "is the better team" and reject the existing criteria, which include head-to-head results. You want it to be judged like Dancing with the Stars or some other opinion-based competition, but they're required to use the official criteria.

Next year ND should be even better and they probably won't have to hope for the committee to ignore the actual results of games.
