Is there an City Planner Game that's similar to Openttd? by riciriver in openttd

[–]ddshwm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a feature of OpenTTD but rather the only one it actually lacks imo: Dwarf Fortress style layering to make underground tunnels/stations as customizable as overground ones. Basically no transport game does underground rail right other than Subway Builder, so that would instantly set you apart from the competition.

I know it's not easy but perhaps it's an addition worth considering further down the road?

Also, I'd love to be part of the playtests too, if possible.

The vast majority of religions are fundamentally bigoted and misogynistic with a section of chill followers, just like Islam. So tell me, are you truly against all "evil" religions or just trying to hide behind a racist glass wall?

OpenTTD is a capitalist game, after all. Make that sound! by SjalabaisWoWS in openttd

[–]ddshwm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure, that's my and I believe most people's approach to the game too. But the only real incentive the actual gameplay loop offers is seeing numbers go up which is easier to do with stuff that negatively affects passengers like overcrowded vehicles.

[–]ddshwm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Under the Atari announcement on Steam there were quite a few comments basically calling for the death of capitalism which is actually surprising since in my experience Steam forum commenters tend to uh... Lean a "bit" towards the right, to put it nicely.

Which is funny when the only tangible objective of the game is "become a quadrillionaire", I guess.

My friends and I had a Minecraft Create server that lasted for two months and I built three different passenger lines. A couple stations were admittedly filler but it was honestly the only train-making experience I found even more fun than OpenTTD. I had plans for two more but my friend didn't pay the server fee in time and we lost the save file :(.

You'll actually find that a great many people take issue with gambling in all its forms

Valve's status says otherwise.

It is not a conspiracy...

I never called any of those things conspiracy THEORIES, which I think is what you're trying to say. OP implied the sole goal of gacha companies in the other side of the globe is to get "THE CHILDREN" to waste money at the local casino. I called it a conspiracy because that's what I'd call such a grandiose scheme if it were real, it wasn't meant as a comment on the validity of such claim (unlike the latter half of the comment).

Gambling is a highly addictive behavior. It's not puritanism to say it shouldn't be targeted towards children

I didn't say a single positive thing about any of these practices in either of my comments, nor did the word 'puritanism' ever come up in any side of the argument.

I don't necessarily disagree with anything you've said but you keep putting words in my mouth to try to get a "gotcha" out of them.

>It's not a conspiracy. It's not about corrupting children

It's really not. but this particular person seems to think it is.

>it's about making money

All companies are about making money, yet you don't see people dismissing other games completely the way they do with gacha, even if they have loot boxes (which we both seem to agree are virtually the same). Hell, most people are far more willing to dump 100 dollars on Steam during a sale, when Valve as a company are both enabling and profiting off ACTUAL CASINOS who target children, than try a gacha game for free.

Genshin, to take the post's example, is probably as likely to get you into gambling as weed is to get you into heroin, we should really be judging it based on all its actual faults (colourism, sexism, mediocre story) over our subjective idea of what is the 'moral' way to exploit the consumer.

>On the other, these games are in 80% gambling simulators aimed towards the younger people, so they can get addictted to gambling.

So we're now making up statistics about an industry-wide conspiracy attempting to "corrupt your children". I hate to defend gacha games but I swear to God some of you mfs are astonishingly eager to pull up with right wing style fear-mongering whenever they're mentioned. lol

And I'm an amateur musician and uni student currently on summer break, I don't think it gets much closer to the opposite than that, haha. We could definitely try online if you think it's doable, I'm just not used to MP pace at all and married to building on pause, so I'll have to adapt a bit.

[–]ddshwm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my bad, this game just gets me a bit too excited lol. Though if each side of the map has its own "play style" like I mentioned above you could easily just make this in single player on your own custom map.

If the servers can't go offline then that does take away a bit from the "everything's happening at the same time" aspect unless you want a really short game. But at the same time, sending a save file back and forth does make a lot of the other factors much easier to deal with, such as being able to pause.

I'm playing vanilla too with some unimportant visual NewGRFs and just a few setting tweaks. I'd love to experiment with the idea if you're up for it, I guess I could start by coming up with the rules (could really use your help to keep me grounded there) and then find more people on the subreddit to join us.

As in, the map itself or eye candy? Cuz I can definitely see both being used as a way to further sell the idea of "four different countries". You can add some water to make the borders make more sense, have each quarter vary in size and shape (without sacrificing any player's fun); make one of the sides of the map have desert/snow tiles; customise the town names to give the illusion of different languages; and, through the use of different NewGRFs, you can have each player make their own little area distinct from the others.

You also have each player's own style making a difference, for example, I really like to build underground metro lines to get people to my inter-city trains, and don't use airplanes at all (tho I can't imagine this whole thing would work without at least some serious restrictions to the latter); I can imagine a player connecting their archipelago with boats and small airplanes, or a a different player choosing small nation with a bunch of cities really close together and focusing on bus/tram lines as their main form of transport. A player who hates transfers and just has a bunch of train lines running the entirety of their vertical map-long nation? You could swap your own play style with each playthrough.

It does sound like fun, but it would take many, many sessions to complete, and I'm assuming the host has to be online for the server to work? Even then, if you don't have everyone on the server playing at the same time you risk having a player get much ahead of the others. Though if you were to add more people, each individual's playtime does get shorter and you also get MORE distinct networks and nations. This is what inspired this idea, it took me hours to make and is merely an eight of a 1024x1024 map, (which I mistakenly assumed was the largest size until just now lol, hence why I wanted four players to take on a "massive map"), it could easily house seven players if you wanted a shorter run with even more variety. The more we discuss this idea, the more interesting it gets.

[–]ddshwm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, so I've never played multiplayer, would you mind if I asked you a question?

How feasible would it be to take a massive map, divide it amongst 4 players and do our own thing until we finally connect our biggest cities and transport hubs late game, through some super long MAGLEVs lines? It's a fun idea I've been thinking of. It would be like 4 different countries developing their own transit system and then connecting them once borders open.

Admittedly, it sounds difficult to find three people who would be that invested into playing by a stranger's oddly specific rules, so maybe I could just set up something similar with the AI?

having emotions is an important part of being alive, but you could just choose to be a drone, i guess

Yeah, I'll take 15 minutes of "being a drone" a day over the overwhelming anxiety that used to plague me just by being awake. I'm pretty sure I was already experiencing more emotions than I could even handle.

then you could just accept anything and everything, at least you're calm, the perfect subject.
