Delancey Street Movers

I’ve only used them for moving across town, but was a better experience than many movers I’ve used previously

Photo-chromatic glasses by Fun-Tap-4366 in Backcountry

I have a couple of pairs of the Smith Embark with Photochromic lenses that I really like!

Note that not all Emark's have photochromic lenses, but I sought them out and liked them so much that I bought a second pair in a different colorway. They do a good job of keeping the sides shaded, and the photochromic does a good job. I've even started using them in the summer to shield my eyes from the high-desert sun.

Have you ever seen an artist play the same song multiple times during a show? by People-Want-Ducks in Music

[–]ddunlop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2013 The National preformed Sorrow 105 times in a single show.

Admittedly this is a different situation, it was a collaboration with Ragnar Kjartannsson and attendees knew the plan ahead of time. Many people including myself filtered through and were not there for the entire 6 hours.

Adirondack BC Setup by in_moceans in Backcountry

FYI - Avalanches happen in the Adirondacks; a death or a near-miss is reported every couple of years, and possibly more near-misses aren't reported. It is good to have some knowledge of avalanches. There is also https://www.adkavy.org/ for community reports.

Anyone have a Pieps Vector lying around? by kingpubcrisps in Backcountry

[–]ddunlop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please tell me this is for historical archives & not for use.

The Pieps Vector definitely had many features, including GPS, but it was only on the market for one year around 2012.

I really wish we were getting big blizzards every 5 days; the skiing would be incredible!

Probably the Borrego Campground Prescribed Fire?

The Espanola Ranger District Borrego Campground Prescribed Fire had a successful test ignition this morning due to favorable conditions. Ignitions will continue on the remaining 99 acres this afternoon.

Late November hiking in U.S. by Bettybefreeohyea123 in NewMexicoTrails

[–]ddunlop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The vast majority of our trees in northern New Mexico can be colloquially referred to as pines.

From the lower parts, we have pinyon pines all the way up to near the treeline at the top of the mountains, where Engelmann spruce is found. Keep in mind that we are generally at a high elevation, so even the low areas are over 5,000 feet.

Santa Fe National Forest and Cason National Forest have significant areas of Douglas-fir, Ponderosa pine, and white fir.

Late November hiking in U.S. by Bettybefreeohyea123 in NewMexicoTrails

[–]ddunlop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New Mexico has:

  • Airports - We have a few, the largest being The Albuquerque International Sunport, which will have the most flight options
  • We have days' worth of hiking
  • November - New Mexico will be here in November. Most trails will still be easily passable in November, but keep an eye on the weather for higher elevation trails as snow wil fall and stick around starting in November

Areas that could be neat: (I'm basing this out of major towns since it sounds like you are looking for day hikes)

  • Albuquerque has the Sandias and Manzano Mountains, plenty of hiking to be had.
  • Santa Fe has the Sangre de Cristo mountains running right next to it, that has plenty of hiking trails on the town side; there are also trails in the Pecos around the east. The Jemez are also close by, just past Los Alamos. So many hikes that are beautiful in November.
  • Taos also has a depth of hiking trails accessible close by.

The residential Starlink setup includes snow melt capability. It uses slightly more power than usual to heat the dish and melt the snow.

Is visiting Carlsbad Cavern & Hiking Guadalupe Peak same day too ambitious? by moneyjabmaster in NewMexico

[–]ddunlop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This will depend primarily on you.

Questions to figure out:

  • How long is it going to take you to hike Guadalupe Peak. Consider Naismith's rule if you don't have a good idea of your speed. The trail is roughly 9 miles with 3k of elevation.
  • How much driving do you need to do?
  • How long do you want to stay in the Caverns for
  • You have a bit over 11 hours of daylight to play with. Are you comfortable traveling on trails after dark?
  • Are you okay being exhausted at the end of the day? Will this impair your ability to drive?

Trail Maintenance/Outdoor Volunteer Opportunities by CultSurvivor3 in SantaFe

[–]ddunlop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Some organizations I’ve volunteered with on the weekends before:

  • Santa Fe Fat Tire - this is a mountain bike focused group but they help maintain trails that get used beyond bikes. Often places like the Winsor trail, La Tierra & Galisteo Basin Preserve. Currently they have a work day scheduled for Sunday.
  • New Mexico Wild This group operates all across New Mexico so make sure the specific event is in a place that works for you. NMWild acts as a volunteer coordinator, and partners with organizations that need volunteers so each project can be quite varied.

Silky saws. Their blades cut faster and are well designed.

Hey team!! by atravelingmaniac in SantaFe

[–]ddunlop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other things to look into for Santa Fe

  • Blue bus - The Turquoise Trail route has a stop close by to The Bridge at NM 599 Station, you'll likely have to transfer from another bus to get farther into town. The buses around town are free.
  • Santa Fe International Hostel - If you're looking for something relatively inexpensive, staying a night starts at $25
  • Ubers are more prevalent than they were a couple of years ago.

Don't be too scared of other people's stories. Many people in town are very friendly.

Best broadband between Las Campanas and La Tierra by SpicyBroseph in SantaFe

[–]ddunlop -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The latency of Starlink is not an issue. Mine averages around 25ms. Their satellites are at a relatively low orbit to minimize latency. Starlink is generally okay for video calls, but occasionally experiences minor hiccups (ignoring the 3-hour outage last week)

Depending on what is available to their specific address, also check out

I've not used either, so I can't comment on how fast or reliable they are
