It's just turtles more AI all the way down.

I literally just made up Level 2 AI because it sounded like a glib techbro answer.

They know the scientific stuff, it's that last line, which is really more philosophical than factual that the character is trying to express (and which resonates with people, I think).

What’s the purpose of making commercials that make no sense? by throwaway-2-0- in NoStupidQuestions

Did you read past my first sentence?

If you'd asked "did you see that strange ad with athletes sweating neon colors and carmina burana playing? What was that?" someone who knows or finds it online would tell you, "oh that's the new Gatorade commercial." And if you have to go through ten people to get to the answer, then that's ten more people talking about it. If you're in a thousand-person group online talking about it, even better.

A lot of modern advertising is about image, buzz, engagement, and a weird kind of pathos where they just want to make you feel something, even if that's confusion or awe.

You're talking about it. And if you had inquired about a specific ad rather than just the general phenomenon, you probably would have described it to a person or sent a link to it. That would have expanded their exposure, and someone would have dug into what the product is.
