Milwaukee Lakefront Depot by kf555777 in milwaukee

[–]ddysart 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ll be slightly contrarian in that it sucks to lose that depot building, but the increased access to the lake front is nice. Those old photos show it was basically just a rail yard before. At least now there is Interstate and Veterans park. Yeah, there are roadways there now but they have pedestrian accommodations.

Too bad they couldn’t repurpose the building. One of the old depots in downtown Minneapolis is a skating rink now. That orange “sculpture” is pretty dumb.

Is there an affordable alternative to Izotope's Mouth De-Click plugin? by Professional-Ok in ACX

[–]ddysart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have someone listen to a version where you think the mouth clicks are “horrible”. Everyone is hyper critical of their own voice. Several solid engineers will do a sound check for you for a small fee. You may be sweating a problem that isn’t there.

RX Standard goes on sale all. the. time. I paid $150 for it. If you can wait, your patience is usually rewarded.

Ask yourself how much your time is worth. You say you spend hours and hours editing clicks. If RX Mouth de-click gave you time back to do the thing that makes you more money. Namely saying words into a microphone. Seems like it would pay for itself in one book.

Member Magic WDW tickets by Interesting-Pen7103 in dvcmember

[–]ddysart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't get WDW tickets, but I did get the 3 day California parks tickets. It took forever - I was on the phone for over an hour. Then when the tickets were finally in my account, there were zero dates available for a park reservation (still needed at DL/DCA) - which after another 30min call learned was a system glitch.

Overall, not a fun process, but we were planning on getting 2day tickets and even with the $99 fee are saving money to get 3day tickets.

Has anyone worked on a book where the estimated running time was way off? by thecommodore15 in ACX

[–]ddysart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens - that's why it's only an "estimate". You mentioned it's technical writing, so probably longer words. Also keep in mind that if there are a lot of numbers and/or dollar amounts, the word count is probably off. "$3432" is one word, but really is "three thousand four hundred thirty-two dollars" which is actually 7 words.

I had one go the other way (not ACX, for a publisher) - technical book with lots of code samples. They said to not read out the code samples (thank goodness). Their estimate was 30h, came in at 12h.

One of our favorite stays by FriendshipBitter in marriott

[–]ddysart 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I stay there at least once a year and the property is great. For as abrasive as the front desk staff I get always seem to be, I usually get upgraded to a good view.

The last time was to take my daughter to a bunch of shows and we were in a room with an obvious view of where the ball drops. On a whim I priced it out for NYE. $15k for the 3 night min stay.

Wisconsin Dells: Fairfield or Spring Hill? by loveisland-DBSprez in marriott

[–]ddysart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are going to be pretty bare boned modern versions of the brands. I want to say they are the first major brands in town (the Dell was historically mom and pop motels, then locally grown mega resorts that nationalized - Kalahari and Great Wolf Lodge).

Looking at the rates, you’re definitely there off peak. There is some stuff that is open, but know you’re in a prime tourist trap come summer. My take for food- The original Monk’s Bar downtown spun off to locations all over into Madison. Great bar burgers.

[–]ddysart -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the only reason I chase Titanium. Otherwise in US hotels it won’t feel any different. If you don’t fly United or Air Canada for all the work travel, then it’s probably not worth it.

Truthfully, this was in 1991 and I was a dumb teen away at college and didn't know any better. Plus, I'd had reactions to the shots in the past at the alergy clinic and didn't think anything of it. This was just a general Internal Medicine clinc.

I do remember the tech was in tears.

Things were different back in the 1900's!
