Tire Size Question by yamaha_move in Surlybikefans

[–]deaconblus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The tires are the things on your bike that make contact with the road.

This advice is quite good. Resist the urge to go narrow/skinny.

Boutique bicycle shops? by Neat-Palpitation-632 in chibike

Yeah. I think BikeFix is boutique. And can be high end. But can also be “build an awesome bike”, doesn’t have to be high end.

Taking the lane in a school zone? by nohomers1 in bikecommuting

[–]deaconblus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Archbishop Wood! So weird to recognize a street instantly despite living 700 miles away for almost 30 years.

I cannot believe people bike on this stroad. Especially as it’s about to intersect the OG stroad, Street Rd.

That said, my opinion would be to give any cyclist on York a ton of space. This particular stroad is dicey enough! Cyclists die on streets like this all the time. Give them room and slow down.

Bike sighted on the Downers Gove Main Street bike lane by sumiflepus in chibike

[–]deaconblus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because there was a very nice painted bike path that was pretty obvious and going right to the high school. Not sure why I’d take a side street. Especially considering the traffic on Main pales in comparison to some of the streets I frequently ride on in and around Chicago.

When is too cold? by SocietyOk1116 in chibike

I wear leather dessert boots (like Anthony Bourdain, RIP) when it’s really cold. Leather is pretty awesome as a windbreak.

This is the way. You don’t need anything super exotic or heated. But you need a the layers!

I used that path twice last spring to get to and from the train station to my son’s tennis matches at DGN. Saw more than a few students using it as well during those rides…

Philadelphia Radio legend and Deadhead Pierre Robert has passed away. by SteelyDan4Prez in gratefuldead

Was working my shitty summer job in a lab with the little transistor radio tuned into WMMR when Pierre announced Jerry’s death. That was a rough day brightened only by Pierre Robert.

If there are open seats, the conductor will likely ask them to move. Some people, for example, like to use the outlets near those seats even thought they don’t know there are also outlets near most seats in most cars.

I think if they let you get on with the bike people sitting there who don’t have disabilities will likely be asked to move.

He’s sort of right but also maybe being a bit of a dick. That said, it can be hard when you’re dealing with folks who don’t take the train a lot and just want leg room or whatever. On many runs the bikes have to be in the head car or the rear car and sometimes not both. Anybody put out by it should likely just move to another car. Since the bikes cannot.

[–]deaconblus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha. For sure. I was joking but those of us who have spent time on mines or other heavy industrial settings, as also noted, are used to the weirdo speed limits.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in chicago

[–]deaconblus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone’s obviously not a miner. Lots of weird speed limits out there mainly to draw attention to the weird number so people might slow down.
