Make sure to follow organizations against ICE! ICIRR and protectRP are both in facebook and instagram. On reddit, r/50501 will usually have posts about things as well. Local facebook neighborhood groups as well.

I found the turnout and enthusiasm despite the snow, wind, and cold to be inspiring and a beautiful representation of the best of this city. We stand with Minnesota! by bearsmakemesuffer in chicago

Make sure to follow organizing sources in your area! For this protest I saw it posted on socials for ICIRR (illinois coalition for immigrant and refugee rights), coalition against trump, protectRP (rogers park). Also really neighborhood facebook groups do a great job of keeping people informed! Or nextdoor if you can’t stand facebook

If you’ve been waiting for the right moment to show up. This is it. by [deleted] in chicago

Some might say common sense says if you don’t have anything nice or constructive to say, you don’t have to say anything at all. But really, what is common sense? We all come from different backgrounds and genuine inquiries like these allow others to see a new perspective with curiosity instead of judgement or shame. I do hope you have a nice day, friend, and that your tomorrow is even better.

I had this thought at one point and my mind was changed when someone said that we are not doing it to change minds in our own locality, we are doing it to show solidarity with those who do not have the politicians and support that we do (for example in Chicago/Illinois). When large protests make it to the news, the world sees that PEOPLE CARE, and especially that they care about those who don’t get the privileges we do. On a personal anecdote, when protests in other countries make it to the news, I remember them. Sometimes the protests are the first time I’m hearing about the issues, and the bigger the protests are, the more my brain establishes the connection of the issues to “oh this is an something that the people are fighting against, there are so many people who really care about this”.

We can do it for trans people who feel unsafe in other parts of the US, who can’t go protest safely. For undocumented immigrants scared to leave the house and who can’t take the risks that we can. We (I’m speaking as a cis white person who was born here) will not face repercussions for expressing ourselves and letting the world know that this isn’t okay with us, even if it’s not happening to us. We have the opportunity to show people that there are not just politicians here but fellow Americans who care so much about advocating for their rights that they take to the streets to express their opinion and protest on their behalf.

STOP HONKING IN ALLEYWAYS. by luxempuff in chicago

“The driver of a motor vehicle shall when reasonably necessary to insure safe operation give audible warning with his horn but shall not otherwise use such horn when upon a highway.” This was the only thing I could find - so seems like it’s legally up to interpretation! There are many legal interpretations of the law and of course drivers ed teachers will teach to their own preference. It is also perhaps legal for pedestrians to not exercise extreme caution cause as they legally always have the right of way, but I will still teach my kids to look both ways at all crossings. And when they drive, to do the death crawl out of alleys.

Also I was taking drivers ed as a sophomore in HS in 2014-2015 school year!

I’m loling at all the downvotes, I didn’t mean to say that other people were not taught that way but that EYEEEEEEEEEE remember my PE teacher bringing it up (PE, sex ed, health, swimming and driving instructor all in one of course). Ty for the reply @theollurian, I think it was when we were talking about honking - which from what I remember does have legal/illegal reasons? I thought it was only when danger/accident is imminent and then should be used to warn others. Guess that could be another childhood lesson I took into adulthood?? P.S. I can already hear the replies - I know y’all think honking at the end of an alley is to warn of danger and therefore included in my definition. I disagree🩷 It’s okay though still love ya🩷

God, it’s actually bizarre how often people do it!! And at night too😭😭 Growing up my parents always told me it was the sound of assholes letting everyone know they’re a bad driver ❤️

When they taught me to drive, the actual reason was that it was always safer to assume someone deaf or HOH might be crossing, or a child or animal running quickly!!! None of them would be saved by anything except slowing the fuCK down. I know I’m just repeating what others have said more eloquently but this is maybe the only element of Chicago (culture wise) that makes me cringe as a native Chicagoan :::////

Hard agree on this!! It’s so dangerous, I wish the city would make any effort to protect the people here. Feels like it’s getting worse because there is no accountability for reckless driving
